Granny of the Dead (2017)
Fresh zombie film!
Granny of the Dead follows a group of teens who wake up one morning to the surprise that the elderly in their town have turned into zombies! Fighting to stay alive, this outlandish humor of this spoof reminds me of Shaun of the Dead. This parody has the pop up scares, gore, and surprises you want to see in a scary movie. It also has the laughs, unique story line, and twists and turns you want to see in a parody. I loved the scary movie group of friends aspect as this film focused on each friend and what they were going through at their own home. The special effects were crazy and unlike anything I've ever seen! I loved this movie and I recommend it to any who wants to see a fresh take on a zombie movie.
The Founders (2016)
Inspirational doc!
The Founders is a documentary following the journey that 13 women went through to create the LPGA. This inspiring documentary follows the 4/13 women that were still alive, Marilynn Smith, Louise Suggs, Shirley Spork, & Marlene Bauer Vossler, as they tell their stories about breaking barriers in the golf world. These women went through many hardships to get women's golf where it is today: they did not have as many choices of fields to play on, people did not take them seriously, and it was very hard for them to get sponsorship. But through all the struggles, these amazing women changed the world anyway! My favorite part about The Founders were their personal stories about all the 13 women! The use of archival footage and photographs of the original 13 really helped tie this amazing documentary together. I recommend this movie for anyone who is interested in the history of golf or women's empowerment!
Chief Zabu (1988)
Vote for Chief Zabu!!!!
A fresh 80's comedy, Chief Zabu follows two dense businessmen who want to invest in Tibuaku, an up-and-coming Polynesian Island. With its outlandish comedy and "totally 80's" quick banter, it does not disappoint. Allen Garfield (The Conversation) and Zack Norman (Romancing the Stone) are comedic geniuses and carry out the dry humored dialogue incredibly. With the banter reminding me of Seinfeld, the plot reminding me of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, and the hilarious & famous actors in this movie, it is one you do not want to miss out on. Lost under the stairs of one of the directors, this satire is eerily relevant to politics and business today, which makes watching it even more hilarious. Every scene had a hilarious situation that was even more over the top than the last. Film fans, anyone who is nostalgic for the 80's, and business majors: I recommend this movie for you!
Good Fortune (2016)
GREAT Fortune
The path to success does not come easy, but Good Fortune shows that no businessman has to lose their soul to the daily grind. Following billionaire and Paul Mitchell CEO John Paul DeJoria, Good Fortune is the story of how DeJoria practices conscious capitalism and gives back to over 160 charities today. Fuel directors Josh and Rebecca Tickell made this documentary personal with the genuine interviews from DeJoria's friends and with the old photographs and archival footage. I specifically loved the personal interviews from stars such as Danny Trejo, Dan Aykroyd, and Michelle Phillips! Being a fan of The Mama's and the Papa's, seeing Michelle Phillips' interview gushing about her childhood friend DeJoria was personally one of the highlights of this movie for me. My favorite part is an ironic story Phillips told about a time when her and DeJoria passed an innocent note in class, how their teacher caught them, and how he made both Phillips and DeJoria stand up in class and said "these two will never amount to anything." I can sit here writing about every aspect I loved about this movie, but honestly, I would just ruin it for you. I recommend this movie because every single scene gets better and more inspiring!
Urban Hymn (2015)
Amazing!!!!
Attention soul music fans, people who love inspiring movies, and everyone else: Urban Hymn is the movie for you. Urban Hymn is about Kate, a case worker assigned to Jamie. Kate spends her waking moments trying to better Jamie's life and finally finds a connection through her choir. Through the beauty and expression of music, Jamie not only turns her life around, but establishes the first positive role model relationship in her life with Kate. The contradiction of emotions I felt while watching Urban Hymn was unlike any other movie going experience I've had. I felt so deeply for each character that is was as if they were all truly important people in my life. Isabella Laughland's disturbingly convincing performance of Leanne Dixon was truly a visceral experience in which I felt like she was affecting my life, as well as Jamie's. Urban Hymn takes you to another place while you're watching. I recommend this movie because it is so original in that it just makes you feel different and diverse emotions.
Danger Close (2017)
Danger Close Summary
If you're looking for an authentic look into the lives of our troops, Danger Close is the documentary for you. After watching the trailer, I knew it was a documentary that I wanted to see, but also one that I had to see. Danger Close follows freelance reporter Alex Quade as she travels through Afghanistan & Iraqi war zones to tell the story of fallen Green Beret soldier Rob Pirelli. Because there are not many firsthand documentaries out about our troops, Danger Close is important for us as citizens to experience. And while it is important, it is also just a really good documentary. Two scenes that really affected me were the scene with Rob's sister and the scene with the helicopter. Rob's sister accounts her fathers' reunions with Rob at his grave. He would buy two coffees, sit with Rob and drink coffee with him. It was heartbreaking to see what Gold Star families go through after losing a loved one. Another scene that hit me was when Quade watched the helicopter she had almost flown in be shot down. It was shocking to watch and I really got to see how Quade started her journey to tell Rob's story. I recommend this documentary because it had me on the edge of my seat, it's honest, and reminds us of the bravery of our troops.
