Obi-Wan Kenobi (2022)
Rough and Disneyfied.
To avoid spoilers I will be generic, but I can say this is pretty rough. The bad guys are incompetent and/or have pretty dumb motivations. The show looks and feels cheap, which is crazy since Disney has all the money in the world to get the right people and do some quality assurance, but they didn't seem to.
Ewan is amazing but that is because he is a great actor, the story around him is sub par at best(although Star Wars doesn't actually have a great track record for quality to begin with so it might be par for the course for them) and when he is giving a real performance, he isn't getting much back from those around him. There are obvious issues that should've been addressed long before releasing this show and they weren't, (The infamous "Chase" scene for example), and the series feels all around amateurish. Not to spoil anything specific but characters make some pretty out of character decisions during episodes 2 and 3 and it just doesn't make sense.
Rough all around.
Dune (2021)
A masterful adaptation.
A beautiful, cinematic, and extravagant adaptation of the classic book by Frank Herbert. Possibly the best book adaptation I have seen since The Lord of the Rings, with the ability to cut what needed to be cut for the story to flow and include and portray what needed to be shown for the heart of Dune to remain.
This film is gorgeous, a visual experience like Blade Runner 2042 before it, this film screams for watching on a large screen at least once, and will be a beautiful watch for years to come.
The casting was perfect, each actor portraying their respective characters wonderfully, and the humanization of the characters through their performances was very welcome. While we don't get as much character development as I would like, what we do get is more than enough to establish the relationships in place between these characters and the absolutely HUGE world they live in. Seeing the guild ship conquering the night sky was majestic.
The sound design is punchy, and clean, and the soundtrack by Hans Zimmer is tonally perfect for what we as the audience are witnessing.
I loved every second of this film, and did not want it to end. I look forward to watching it over and over and over again.
Let It Fall: Los Angeles 1982-1992 (2017)
A Documentary about very Important Events, Edited Poorly.
This documentary is fairly enthralling, and contains a lot of extremely useful information. It makes a good point of pointing out the shady decision making and terrible events that led up to the L.A Riots, and it really puts those events front and center. However, there are very odd editing choices made throughout the documentary that have the capability to throw the viewer out of the experience.
There are drops in audio, moments of complete silence, weird fades to black, interviews without names of who we are seeing talk to us, awkward breaks in the flow of conversation and in the flow of the entire documentary. The events and terrible choices and racially motivated hatred that led to these riots are important to know, and they are probably more important now then ever because we are still living with this systematic racism in our police across the US. However, the editing for this documentary leaves a lot to be desired.
Challenger: The Final Flight (2020)
A Beautiful and Heartbreaking experience.
NASA's shuttle program was an experiment into normalizing space flight for all the world, and this experiment was fraught with danger and politics and heroism. This documentary; wonderfully crafted using archive footage, interviews, and b-roll from the time as well as interviews and recreations from today; explores the excitement and frustration that led up to one of the greatest disasters in American Space travel. The stories of Space travel accidents and deaths have always affected me emotionally, and this series is no different. You will likely be sad, angry, and filled with immense pride and respect at the sacrifice, hard work, and willingness to give one's life to the pursuit of progress.
The editing and cinematography for the episodes and interviews and very well done, conveying the emotional impact of what is being said and shown wonderfully. This series broke my heart, but it is a story that must be told, for all it's triumphs, and all it's faults. I highly recommend this documentary to documentary lovers, science fans, and space nerds alike.
The pursuit of scientific progress is a dangerous thing, and sometimes that pursuit comes at the cost of heroic lives, but it is a pursuit that must be undertaken, for the betterment of all mankind. This documentary is worth the watch to remember the stories of some of those heroic people who gave their everything in the pursuit of knowledge.
The Old Guard (2020)
Lame
An interesting concept put together in the most boring and cliche way possible. The script is full of cringey on the nose dialogue and the constant use of god awful music and terrible cgi blood and gore was headache inducing. This film is another example of Netflix putting out something that never should have been made just to pad their platform with more braindead programs for people who spend all their time on the phone instead of watching the show. Ultimately a stupid waste of time.
Midway (2019)
Terrible Garbage from Start to Finish
Easily one of the worst movies I have seen in a long while. Full of bland cinematography, boring action, pointless and unlikable recreations of historical figures and more historical inaccuracies than I can even begin counting. The film doesn't even get to Midway until over an hour in, and it's not like that hour was spent developing any characters, it was spent informing the audience that this thing called World War 2 happened. What an idiotic waste of time and money, why anyone would sit in the editing bay with this steaming pile of garbage and say, "Yes, this is a releasable film," amazes me. Do not waste your time watching it, even making fun of how trash it is gets tedious.
Polytechnique (2009)
A Realistic recreation of a real life nightmare.
This film, shot mostly handheld with a black and white color grade, is a realistic recreation of a real life nightmare scenario that happened not too long ago in modern history. Focusing on a small group of fictional recreations of real life people, this film truly shows the dangers of untreated pyschological disorders, including depression, and the dangers of anti social idealogy in the hands of an armed person. It is a well done film with excellent acting from the cast, and is an anxiety inducing and truly negative experience, but one worth watching, to both remember the horror of the past, and to realize that such events still happen far too frequently in the present.
