Frequently Asked Questions About Time Travel (2009)
Not HA HA funny but it's all in good fun
With some better acting and a sharper script this movie could have been a lot better than it was.
What it is however is a fun romp through the trials and tribulations of time travel, poking good fun at its "rules" and issues. As well as classic Science Fiction in general. Sharp eyed views will see homages to "Them", "The Sound of Thunder", "Back to the Future", "Close Encounters", "Battlestar Galacticia" and others.
Confined to a pub was a nice little bit as it kept all the action bottled up into one neat package and didn't require the exploration of the outside world.
It's clever and fun.
Now for the bad news. Well you have to admire the situation and the dry British humor (it was a BBC production after all)...the movie lacks any big laughs. Or even that many small ones. In better more comedic hands this could have been laugh out loud funny.
Like I said it's clever and fun and should find an audience...but it's not "funny" and that's something a "comedy" should be.
The question is...would I watch it again or pay money to see it? Yes, yes I would. I just think with a slight sharper edge to the humor and better actors this could have been so much more.
Blood Drive (2017)
What the hell did I just watch?
**CLEAN AND NO SPOILERS**
I know what Grind house is, I actually have a a healthy respect for it. When done right it can be brain candy, something so over the top and fun and stupid at the same time you can't help but laugh and smile over it.
It's not meant to be weighty. After watching the 1st episode I thought...OK they got the bombastic attitude right. They got the stupid ideas right, the sex right. It's a real life "itchy and scratchy" cartoon for adults. So why don't I like this? Maybe I don't care for senseless violence since we have so much of it in real life. Maybe because of I've seen all these ideas done before, only much better and in better movies and shows. It's derivative for something that is derivative by it's very nature.
Maybe it's just the actors are "B" and "C" level at best (and I'm being generous) and this is probably the most steady paycheck they will ever make. Maybe its all the characters are stock and you really don't care about any of them.
Even when you have a scene where the actors are meant to bond...you don't care.
Watch an episode or three and judge for yourself...it could be worse, but I'm not sure how.
Phörpa (1999)
A wonderful celebration of what is important in life
I'm not going to review the plot here. Others have done that...but this movie is not about Buddhism or football (soccer).
It's about the things that really matter. Family, friendship, connections, faith, history. It's not a perfect film. It's not a film that you easily forget. You simply feel good after this movie.
At the end of it I turned to my wife, who was in tears, and quoted the famous footballer Bill Shankly who said "Football isn't a matter of life or death, it's much more important than that." The Cup shows us how much.
