Five Nights at Freddy's (2023)
I Had Higher Hopes
I have to admit... in an era where video game adaptations fail most of the time, I kept my expectations for this movie low on purpose.
Despite this, a very small part of me was hoping this would be a character based drama/horror with a focus on the messed up story behind the Freddy's Fazbear's Pizzeria.
Instead, it was a very mediocre movie that will likely not break any records as a video game adaptation.
The Pros: Amazing looking Animatronics, great setting.
Cons: Incredibly convoluted story with many missed opportunities, rushed ending, lack of horror, jumpscares don't work at all, PG-rating, poor decision making from characters due to a terribly written screenplay.
As someone who is only familiar with FNAF on a surface level, this movie just didn't work for me.
However, some fans might disagree, although even the most hardcore lore fans will have to admit that certain elements or parts of the movie just don't work.
If they ever make a sequel, I just hope it's better than this. This one gets a 5/10 for me.
War of the Worlds (2019)
If it was not called War of the Worlds, no one would complain
First I want to say that I am quite disappointed that the show completely reimagined what the book was about. The aliens are not martians, there most likely are no tripods and the aliens look like robots.
However, if you watch this show with a different perspective and forsake the fact that it is called War of the Worlds, you will surely enjoy the show. The fact that they chose the french/british production over the american makes it a lot more intriguing. To be honest I am sick of american alien invasions and the setting makes for a nice change. The acting is decent, the characters so far are interesting and the cinematography is absolutely gorgeous. The show delivers a sense of mystery and is very ominous during most of the runtime, not to mention that the director isn't afraid to kill off characters, which brings a sense of realism to the situation. While the aliens are still shrouded, you do get a small glimpse at them. I am not so impressed with how they designed them, and I am not impressed with the fact we have so far not seen any machines, but I hope my opinion changes in next episodes.
Like I said, this show suffers from 1 debatable flaw and that is its name. If it was named anything else, it'd be great, but when the director chooses to name the show War of the Worlds, certain demands have to be met to please the audience and I understand that. This show does not fulfill demands of the book fans, but as its own production, the series makes for a decent story about survival and human character. I would definitely recommend u to watch it, but do not expect a faithful adaptation.
Game of Thrones: The Long Night (2019)
Awesome battle, but not Game of Thrones
Very Simple. I love the fights in this episode, but not the way they get rid of the most well hyped up villain in the series and I definitely don't like the fact that almost every main character now has plot armor. One of the main things Game of Thrones took pride in is its unpredictability and its realism which no longer exists now. It feels a lot more like a Hollywood movie rather than Game of Thrones because everything was so predictable. I simply don't like it. I don't think anyone who read the books likes it, but u can feel free to disagree.
The X Files: Rm9sbG93ZXJz (2018)
Not an X file!
I'll keep it short because there isn't much to talk about.
This is not an X file. As far as I know, X files are dealing with unsolved cases or phenomena. This episode on its own does not deal with any case in particular, nor does it even remotely resemble an X file.
I guess the writers felt an urge to be among millions of others who like to point out that technology is ruining us and made an episode about it. Like there isn't enough people talking about it already.
Yes, I understand they want to take a different approach to an episode every once in a while, but I feel like they went completely off the tracks with this one.
It was barely entertaining. Some little humor in the episode gave me a small dose of entertainment, but that's about it as for this episode.
I'll give the episode 5/10 only because of writer's efforts to portray the current society we live in that is addicted to technology. Other than that, episode is pretty bad.
It (2017)
One of Best Modern Horrors.
I imagine most people as myself came to the IT teaser trailer with huge hype and greatly anticipated one of the Stephen King's greatest antagonists - the demon clown Pennywise. I had mixed feeling whether or not the trailer would ruin my expectations, but it did not fail to deliver one of greatest modern horror experiences yet.
The movie is about group of kids who are part of the so called "Losers Club" trying to stop the demonic clown from kidnapping any more kids from their city. They go on about this pursuit of 'IT' without caution and get in trouble which kicks in the tension, the feeling of the movie and starts the story.
I have to admit, this movie was pretty well made. The level of details put in this movie is incredible, along with great cinematography and a horror story mixed with a little bit of humor in it. This also has to be the first time in a while I've seen kids put up a great act. Honestly, I was surprised at how well they all performed their roles and the amount of enthusiasm that was put into their roles was mesmerizing. The Pennywise was just... perfect! No other words can be used to describe how well Bill Skarsgard played as Pennywise. I love it.
Now, although this is a great movie, I do have few issues with it. There is such thing as "too many" characters. I feel like there was too many characters and it was hard to really give any of them a developed background we can latch on to when something goes wrong with them. Many times in the movie, few kids got hurt, but because I couldn't even remember their names, I couldn't really feel bad for them, or relate in any way. Another problem is that the movie had a bit too many jump scares. I mean, we're talking a lot of jumpscares of which 80% were pretty predictable and not many of them managed to keep the tension that was suppose to go upwards. There were quite a few clichés which really didn't bother me as much, but it also felt like they weren't as mandatory. For example, there was the scary old house, the kid tripping over stuff while running in danger, kids running towards and not away from the danger and the dead end cliché. The clichés don't really contribute to the tension and can be swapped for much better ways of keeping the tension.
The major plot hole with this movie is the lack of interest by every person in town with what's going on. Is there no police on the "missing kids" case? Did they find the missing kids in the end? What happened to the rest of the floating kids? How did the old lady not hear George scream? Those were only few questions this movie failed to answer.
Although this movie has a great story, pretty good execution, acting, the feel and cinematography, I'm giving it a 7/10, mostly because I have hard time accepting mistakes. I still really enjoyed the movie nonetheless, but you can feel free to disagree about the review.
Final Destination (2000)
If you value time, don't watch this.
Honestly, throughout all my life watching horror movies, I have never came across something so terrible and repetitive as Final Destination. Final Destination fits the rank of a cheap horror movie made as a cash grabbing technique for gullible audiences that would enjoy watching a dog taking a dump as long as its labelled as "horror" with some effective sounds to make it "scary" and disgusting.
The point of the whole movie is that someone see's flashes of their deaths and their friends or random people, then they either stop it or simply ignore it and as u would expect - they fail.
The whole movie is centered around praising very gruesome and puke worthy imagery without any real plot. The characters and their acting is so terrible you actually can't wait for them to die, but when they do, you wonder why you're still watching the movie. It's the kind of movie that will make real horror fans hate themselves by the time they finish watching it. The point of the "story"...? There isn't such. Suspense? Doesn't exist. You can just sit back and have a good laugh at the character's stupidity and awful writing. I actually think this movie doesn't fit in any genre (it's definitely not thriller), let alone horror. Instead, it's a cheap shot to make some free cash.
If you watch this, prepare for 1 and half hour of cringe worthy acting, painfully awkward writing and dialogues and some really, really gruesome deaths which is what makes dumb people rate this as a "good horror". I honestly don't recommend you to watch this or its sequels.
Doctor Who: The Satan Pit (2006)
1st part was better, but this one is good too.
I had high hopes that the cliffhanger at the end of first episode would reveal something terrible. Instead, it left us with nothing. Just an opened pit that goes deep below. We were all half expecting something to just crawl out of the hole and start something going, but nothing happened. Later, we find out that was just a key to getting inside a prison where the Beast is being held. While the Doctor tries to return, the beast cuts off power and starts talking to the crew and the Doctor. They had 1 incredible dialogue where The Beast left Doctor with no words and managed to put fear in their bones by howling at them from the screen. The rest of the episode is devoted to characters trying to escape oods and knock them out in order to escape and that's what they do, but not everything turned out as planned. The Beast was still had a control over Toby's mind and Doctor jumped inside the pit, only to find the Beast in chains with 2 vases standing in front of him (I don't know why they went with the vases when I think they could've done a lot more with the pit). Apparently, the Beast's body is just kind of there, but its mind is away in Toby, so we didn't get to see another fight between the Doctor and the Beast, instead, Toby is simply shot out of the space ship; the Doctor broke the vases (which turned out to be the power source they were looking for) and conveniently, before all hell goes loose, Doctor somehow finds his Tardis in the pit and saves the day.
Now, I gotta admit, I expected a lot out of this episode and I don't understand why most people think this 2nd part is better than the 1st. I mean, the Beast cgi is awesome, the dialogue between Doctor and the Beast is awesome, there was some tension, but it sort of faded away the moment oods were knocked down. Other than these 3 factors, I don't see why this episode is considered better. I personally would give it a solid 6/10, because it was entertaining (with some plot holes), but due to awesome Beast cgi and the most clever dialogues ever made in DW, I'm giving it a 7/10.
Evil Dead (2013)
Not 'spectacular' but definitely worth watching.
I admit, I must've been one of the few people who watched the remake first and then seen the original. The difference is huge. The original is better nonetheless, but this movie also managed to entertain me.
I see this remake as an attempt to create a true and horrific Evil Dead experience seen through the eyes of some new characters and protagonists. It worked, but the movie also had its flaws.
Short summary:
Mia (who is an ex junkie) came with her brother David and their friends at a remote cabin in the woods to have a little bit of fun away from the cities and to help... well, Mia. Not later, they find a cursed book (Necronomicon) in the basement and one of the characters, Eric reads out loud from the book and summons evil demonic presences lurking in the woods that will kill them 'one by one'.
Some of the pros about the remake:
Now, what I really liked about this movie is the real horror, the gore and fear created by the antagonist to give you one of the most chilling experiences ever. Most of what you see in the movies is practical effects, rather than CGI and it looks very, very good.
The book also looks a lot more scary and better compared to the original movie.
The demons are probably THE scariest, most sadistic and truly the most evil antagonists you'll ever see.
Some of the cons about the remake:
The overall pacing is not well made. Everything happens way too fast and it somewhat doesn't give you the needed level of tension by constantly killing off characters.
The writing could have been better. And yes, I know this is a remake of the original, but I don't think it should've been so similar when it comes to the writing. I've seen a lot of remakes, but this is the first time I feel like showing something all over again, only more terrifying doesn't work.
The acting was poorly done by many characters. There are few characters whose performance I really, really liked in this movie. The main and the best actor in this movie is Lou Taylor Pucci (Eric). Jane Levy (Mia) did an excellent job as "The Demon" and pretty good as herself. Rest of the characters didn't show much, let alone Elizabeth Blackmore (Natalie) who was probably the worst actor in this movie.
There was no character development. We only saw a bit of "connecting" between David and Mia in the beginning, but rest of the movie, characters are pretty much non developed and uninteresting hence why their deaths didn't make me feel sad for them (except Eric).
Overall, I can say that this movie is decent at least. It's scary, its gory, it has a somewhat decent antagonist and less decent, but 'ok' writing. The movie is definitely worth watching, but if you're expecting a 'Spectacle' remake, then I suggest you don't bother with it.
Ash vs Evil Dead (2015)
One of the most brilliant comebacks to an epic franchise.
We all loved the original Evil Dead and we all wanted it to badly to return in the cinemas, but little did we expect that it was gonna become one of the best TV shows out here.
The whole show follows a similar pattern to the movie. The good guy (Ash) accidentally summons demons by reading out of Necronomicon, demons start possessing people and coming after the book, while Ash works his way through them one by one. He has his friends; Kelly and Pablo to help him out. Not soon after, we're introduced to a new semi villain (or even anti villain later) called Ruby Knowby. Apparently, she's the 'Dark One' and she's after the book she wants to use in order to keep demons at bay. As usual, the evil is not so easily defeated and we get to see the story continue in new seasons.
What makes this show so good is the combination of horror and comedy elements. The show is somewhat lighthearted and pretty welcoming to all audiences, but at the same time, it's a brutal gore fest action show that makes any gore look funny no matter how brutal.
The overall performances are decent, the writing and the pacing are both remarkably well made. I myself burned through all 2 seasons in 1 day and I'm impatiently waiting for 3rd season.
If you watched the original movie franchise, I can guarantee you will love this show, probably even more than the movies and even if you never watched the movies, you'll still love it.
Doctor Who: The Impossible Planet (2006)
Mindblowing episode!
I started watching this episode not expecting much, but ended up completely mindblown by one of the most thrilling, scariest and best stories in Doctor Who.
Short summary of the episode:
Doctor and Rose arrive in a space base not knowing where they are exactly. They stumble upon some strange mysterious writing unknown even to Tardis' knowledge that ultimately leads to introduction of one of the best antagonists in the whole show. They meet the crew members that explain they're on a planet that's floating in space above a black hole. Not soon after, things start going horribly wrong. One of the characters gets possessed by an entity (refered as the Devil or the Beast) that supposedly remained dormant on the planet until humans came and woke it up. It then proceeds to possess the slave oods that start killing people in the base (1 character whose name we don't even know). The episode ends on a cliffhanger where Doctor came across a strange seal deep in the planet that starts opening and sends things into chaos.
Now I gotta admit. This episode was absolutely brilliant. Although we didn't see much of the character development in this episode (on top of everything, there are 2 characters we weren't even introduced to), I can forgive it that much for having amazing writing and the antagonist. The whole episode gives off many horror elements that constantly add up to the tension culminating into 1 big ending and a cliffhanger to this episode. The main horror elements we see here are the characters (the oods, the Beast), suspense, mystery and genuine horror in front of the unknown. The characters like the oods are genuinely scary only because of their hideous appearance and the fact when they're possessed, they look twice as scary. We didn't see the Beast in its full form in this episode, but we did see it possess Toby and it made one of the creepiest and chilling entrances you'll ever see on television. The very movement, the letters, the monologue, the intelligence of the Beast is what makes it so scary. This gave off genuine tension and horror that kept constantly building up and giving a more chilling effect to the viewers.
One of the other things that I really liked about this episode is the mystery of the whole story. The episode presented so many questions that will likely never be answered, but that's exactly what made it so good. Some questions I asked after this episode were:
"How can Doctor's Tardis not translate the writing?" "What God was the Beast reffering to when it transmitted through the Ood?" "Is it the real Devil"? "Who made that civilization deep in the planet?"
This is just the questions I asked after watching this episode. It gets more intense in the next part and I definitely recommend everyone to watch this episode or in case you want to get one of your friends into the show, simply show them this episode.
The Flash (2014)
Decent show.
Flash is one of those shows I came across randomly on TV and it got me really into the whole "superhero universe". I decided to watch the few episodes and the more I did, the more I liked it, but I also started noticing way too many flaws in this show that sometime made me not want to watch the show. I admit, I didn't have any hopes about the show, but it is 'decent' enough to be entertaining to all audiences.
The whole show is revolving around Barry Allen (The Flash) and his struggle with his new super power (The speed). We get a new meta human villain every new episode while also introducing new super heroes (from the comics) every now and then to enhance the experience of viewers who read the comics.
Now, without revealing too much, I'm giving this show a 6/10, only because this show never fails to make a mistake (nearly every episode). I've been through all 3 seasons of the show now and I've seen so many flaws that made me wanna stop watching the episode several times over (but I didn't... because in a way, I like the show). From hideous cgi to poor writing and acting fails, the whole story can sometime seem vague and not very intriguing. Nonetheless, the show is entertaining, I'm giving it that much. If you do not care much for details and if you like the super hero genre, I guarantee that you will enjoy this show more than I do.
Fear the Walking Dead (2015)
Came in excited, left disappointed.
I guess you can say we were all very excited when Fear the Walking Dead was announced. I - myself did came in a little late for the show, but I was just as bit excited as everyone else when I first started watching the show. The hype faded very quickly as the show progressively became worse and worse with every episode.
We were all expecting a decent 'Walking Dead' spin off that explains and develops the apocalypse into more details (how it all started, how it went down, the action and struggle of fighting zombies on the streets etc.) but instead, fighting the apocalypse took a back seat and was replaced by repetitive and annoying family drama that was suppose to "develop characters" and in the process kills whatever hype I had for the show. As well, the character development was on pair with some very painfully bad acting from both the main and secondary characters. The only remotely decent acting I've seen in the whole show came from Rubén Blades (Daniel Salazar) and even that was merely decent, not good. I was kinda expecting the show would flop quickly, but here we are still... somehow. The 2nd season started well, but the show still suffers from bad writing, acting and many plot holes. In the story at this point, the whole apocalypse already destroyed the world and we got to see none of it and now the show is essentially in "The Walking Dead" time line/period (which really was not needed) where characters are devoted to surviving the apocalypse. All we really got in the end is just another Walking Dead knockoff with terrible acting and writing that completely destroys the mood. Luckily, we still have the original show anytime we want to feel like the show we're watching is worth the time.
