Avatar: The Last Airbender: Aang (2024)
Missed the mark
Why cut the whole bit with Sokka training kids? It was the heart of his character as a goof, while capturing the lighthearted comedy of the show, and making the fire nation encounter all the more intense.
These types of decision plague the entire first episode. The pacing feels rushed, making the acting feel cringe. Y'all are all out there, why not film a few small scenes to flesh out the episode and give it the heart the original has?
Most importantly, every full Avatar moment in the original brought tears to my eyes. Removing the first one and focusing on the negative one set the wrong tone.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022)
What?
I absolutely loved the first Doctor Strange film.
This movie is.. just aweful. It''s boring, through and through. Nevermind the meh plot and issues with continuity, it's yawn inducing madness.
I get what the movie was, what it was about, why it is what it is, but non of those nuggets are worth investing several boring hours for.
Schitt$ Creek (2015)
It's a good one
I try to reserve 10s for true great watches, arts, or socially meaningful series. This one just hits so many marks that it's difficult to explain why it deserves a 10.
Great humor, interesting actors, brilliant character arca, satisfying story, meaningful commentary about social dynamics, a bit of observational comedy, and a whole lot of fun.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: Strange New Worlds (2022)
Off to a good start
More complex dialogue, less swearing, a return to the principles that is what Trek is actually about. The show seems to be more character focused, with more rational people that are up to the standards someone that has gone through the academy.
This show feels like Trek so far. Hopefully they keep that up, and also hopefully the writing isn't just bait and switch to C rate writing. We shall see, but the first episode deserves some praise.
Star Trek: Picard: Two of One (2022)
A bit boring
Idk, this episode wasn't super great. Not only that, but the glaring issues in writing are leaned on purposely?
Astronauts are legit screened and prepped to not panic, same with fighter pilots. It happens, but it's asinine to think they'd send someone to space that's in the middle of a mental breakdown.
The first 3 episodes were good, and the overall arc is interesting enough. But there still are a lot of aspects that when you walk away and think about it you go... that could have been fixed or better, and it's embarrassing it wasn't.
Movie 43 (2013)
Worth it
Idk how this got such low reviews. It's not a great movie, and it wasn't trying to be.
If you like random comedy: this is a good one. To be fair, it's not a gem, but well worth the time. Definitely will get a laugh or two. Also, getta see Hugh Jackman teabag his own food. 😂
The Tender Bar (2021)
Little things
This movie's worth is in the little things, the slight moments that are easy to miss, but filled with meaning, learning, and understanding. Other than that, it's slow on purpose, which is apparent with the song choices. Take a breath and just enjoy it for a while, don't try to have some climatic arch and drama, just sit with it and see what you notice.
At least, that's what I got from it, besides some of the more obvious main arcs. Glad I watched it.
Ride the Eagle (2021)
Bravo 👏
It handles some heavy topics while keeping a lighthearted tone, a sense of comedic amusement, and enough drama to make it more engaging than slow.
I think that this is a movie that will impact some more than others, and in a way it's written for them. It's not a one stop shop, and that may mean it's not as interesting to everyone.
To anyone that can relate to estranged maternal figures, and the myriad of emotions that comes with that, this is a must watch.
Lady of the Manor (2021)
Good one
Ignore the bad reviews. This is a simple, yet interesting enough script that facilitates a myriad of jokes. That's it, don't expect more than to have some laughs.
Worth a watch if you love comedy.
Jungle (2017)
No joke
For anyone that's been in anywhere near of a similar situation, this movie really hits some truths.
From the immediate praying, to the hallucinations, to the frail and weak reality of what taking your body to the limits really does.
A great movie, although difficult to watch at times, and certainly more of an interesting movie than a fun movie night choice.
Star Trek: Discovery: Far from Home (2020)
The worst ST episode to date
Look, I've joined along for the ride to enjoy what Discovery is, despite the deserved backlash. I tagged along for Picard, as well.
This episode is the epitome of bad writing. You'd really have to try to make something so horrid.
Replace every single person who was involved writing this show. This isn't kiddy hour, this is a several decade franchise. You shouldn't be practicing your ideas on this canvas.
