Berlin Syndrome (2017)
Really?
A young woman behaves- like a complete moron. She ignores every signal any female with half a brain would observe. She makes only half- hearted attempts to escape her captor who is your bog- standard psychopath. For any reviewer here - or anywhere- to sympathize, or worse, empathize with this dangerous predator defies understanding. Then inexplicably, utterly without any explanation or logic, she has the keys and escapes. Come on!! What I.Q do the filmmakers think the viewers have? To infer Stockholm Syndrome is present here is to utterly insult female intelligence. What a lazy, stupid, misogynistic film.
Radio On (1979)
Life is too short for this
Couldn't watch this pretentious drivel. After 10 minutes I felt like life wasn't worth living if I had to spend one more minute looking at this guy moping around staring -ok life was bleak and meaningless in the dreary Britain of 1979. I was there and really couldn't be bothered having to revisit it in 2017. This film is bleak and meaningless and as boring as batshit.
The Model (2016)
Atmospheric but miserable ending
I quite enjoyed this film even if it was a bit unrealistic. For example what parent would allow one so young to go to Paris alone to pursue a modelling career? Also, success seems to come quickly and easily to Emma which seems at odds with most other portrayals of this business. She seems to operate largely on her own, navigating this teeming world in relative isolation and most of the ill-fated events are engineered by her. Yes, many of the men she meets are opportunists but none act until Emma more or less gives the go-ahead. Her passivity strikes me more as sullen disregard for protocol than naivety and she continues to flourish despite her unsophisticated and childish responses to that very cynical and brutal world. Even at the end she can have success if she chooses it and this was the most disappointing aspect of the film-the ending. A real let down. OK we can make up our own mind about why it ended this way and what happens next but I don't want to do that-I want the film maker to provide the answer-to complete the theme of the narrative.
Marti, dupa Craciun (2010)
Intriguing title unsupported by content
Super boring. Maybe it's because I'm not Romanian. Nothing new or original and I actually fell asleep. Rewound the bits I missed. Shouldn't have bothered. Lots of reviews here talk about new wave cinema-who cares what kind of cinema it is? What's important is that it is engaging. This film did not engage me much at all. No complaints about the acting however; everyone in it was fine although a few scenes felt a tad stilted or irrelevant and the tedious scene where the child was playing the piano seemed to go on forever and really grated on my nerves. Ditto the final scene with the carol singers. The dialogue, while realistic and mainly believable, was not interesting and gave little or no insight into motive, relationship histories or character. It is one thing to present a slice of life to the audience, another to offer nothing different in doing so.
