Halloween II (2009)
Zombie has an interesting perspective on Halloween
First off, I liked Zombie's 2007 version of Halloween, my only complaint, if you could even call it that, was the *rape* scene that was included in the directors cut, I just preferred the alternate scene when Michael leaves the institution, apart from that I felt it was an interesting re-telling of John Carpenter's Halloween. Halloween 2 (the directors cut) is not as introspective, or inventive, which I was prepared for. I was also prepared for it to be a bloody mess, literally.
What i wasn't prepared for was how much the character of Michael changed, and I don't really like the change. (i.e grunting when he kills, not wearing his mask and talking(!))The movie follows Laurie Strode and how she is dealing with the Michael Myers attack that occurred one year earlier. At the same time, Michael is on his way back to Haddonfield, killing anything and everything along the way, with the apparition of his mother Deborah at his side.Zombie makes Myers' goal clear, he is trying to reunite his family. The movie is a big mess, with the story randomly jumping around and a lack of character development. The only characters with any real development at all are Laurie and Dr. Loomis (who has just published another book, and has completely changed to an egotistical jerk) but even then the progression is minimal.
I suppose judged as a stand alone film, it isn't that bad, its a slasher-horror movie, and in that area, it arguably delivers, however, after the way the first Zombie Halloween remake was, it definitely doesn't compare. it's worth seeing to come to your own conclusions, but don't have extremely high expectations.
Sex and the City (2008)
There's always some good and some bad sex...
I think most people are being extremely hard on this film. Is it as witty as the show? no, but it has its moments and the humour is definitely there. Is it the same as the show was? in some ways, but then again, it's not the show, its the movie and movies follow a different format then a TV show does. Is this film work seeing? depends. are you a die hard fan? are you looking for a continuation on the Big and Carrie story? are you wondering if Samantha really could settle down and be with Smith? If yes to the above three questions (or any one out of three,) then go see it. I found it to be enjoyable. I went in with low expectations, and came out happy. If you liked the show at all, i feel seeing this film is vital and pivotal, its almost like i owed it to those four amazing women who definitely helped me through a bad day or break up or what ever. In any event, the movie is 2.5 hours long and follows the women through one year of their life, around 5 years after the series ended. they have ups, they have downs and of course, the heart of the movie is the friendship of our four fabulous women. grab ur best friends, have a cosmo, sit down, and just get lost in Sex and the City. <3
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008)
"it's not the years, it's the mileage" definitely worth seeing.
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull has most of the key elements that made the first three Indy films such successes and classics. However, this film is different, those who go into the theatre expecting another Raiders of the lost Ark, or the Last Crusade will be disappointed. Indy's journey this time is a little bit different, as opposed to the young, or younger man he was at the time of the last films, this time around, he's been playing the game for a long time, definitely no rookie. This element has upset some viewers, that there is less researching and more knowing, however, that is the advantage Indy is playing. He has done so much and learned so much that i find it believable that the character knows what he does without research. Also, this film is not as heavily reliant on history, this film includes aspects of science and supernatural. This should not really come as a surprise to die hard fans since George Lucas and Spielburg both admitted that in the Vanity Fair article that was released around Christmas time. regardless, the humour is definitely Indy's style, the film is filled with action, jokes and heart. Go see Indy on the big screen! Harrison Ford is amazing in it and you'll enjoy it, even the far-fetched parts!!!
Iron Man (2008)
One of the best "comic book based" movies to come out in a while!
In the past 10 years a slew of comic book movies have been made, or re-made, or made into live-action. Among these are titles like X-Men, Spiderman, Batman, Punisher, the Hulk and so on. Some (only some!) of these movies have honestly been a let down, whether it be because the story was lacking, the acting sucked, the characters were not explained or developed and so on. However, Iron Man was a great movie in my opinion. I am not extremely well-versed in the Iron Man comics, however, i know the basics, and i felt that this story was well told. i didn't feel the plot line being rushed, or a fake "guy/girl" relationship being forced on the audience. the point from beginning to end was clearly the creation, development and story of the Iron Man. it is a hilarious movie, it has action, some suspense, and is a definitely a flick to catch on the big screen!
The Haunted Mansion (2003)
The Haunted Mansion, it is what it is..
I have to say that i am one of the biggest Haunted Mansion fans (the ride and in a way the film). I 'm 21 and i was 18 when this film came out in theatres and i loved it. The movie is simplistic and there is not much character development or plot development, but what do you expect? this film is not like Pirates of the Caribbean, (also based on a Disney ride of course). However, i have seen this movie over 100 times and i do love it. It does what it should, it has ghosts and ghouls and bad spirits and good that are all trying co-existing inside this mansion and at the core of it all is a love story.
I recommend this movie if you like the ride, even if it is just to see the cute nods to the ride that exist within the movie, like our favourite three hitch-hiking ghosts. The film is also good for a laugh and if you don't wanna think to much for a night.
Again i say, it may not be an Oscar winning film, but its definitely a cute movie with a simple plot-line and neat CGI effects.
The Reaping (2007)
Good movie to rent on video...
The Reaping Staring Hilary Swank is not the worst film I have seen in 2007. Many of the comments on the IMDb boards suggest that this film is terrible, however, it is actually not all that bad. I will agree that the twist at the end of the film is similar to Signs in some aspects, but still, it works for the film. Swank's acting is fairly well done considering most of the characters in the film are slightly 2 dimensonal, if you are looking for extreme depth then you will have to look elsewhere. also if you are looking for an interesting bibilical movie, once again you must look elsewhere. This really is a good "sit down, not really have to think, just enjoy what happens" sort of flick. It's not boring, but it does not require intense concentration. The ending is slightly far-fetched, but in a film about the 10 plagues, it is understandable. all and all, it's worth seeing if you do not have extremely high expectations, and also The Reaping is a movie that might be worth waiting and renting on video, as opposed to seeing in theatres.
The Grudge 2 (2006)
not the same as the first
I am a huge fan of both horror and the actress Sarah Michelle Gellar. When i saw the first, "The Grudge" i was fairly impressed, it was generally scary and had the shock value of most horror films. I think the woman who plays the wife that has the grudge is amazing, that she uses no special effects to accomplish how her body contorts, that is all natural. On another note, the sequel did not impress me. It did have some quality scares but i felt that the sequel did not need to be made. The movie just ends, and the audience is left with knowing the entire purpose of the movie is to demonstrate that the grudge is continuing. As a result of Gellar's character Karen attempting to burn down the house, she has now released this "grudge" onto the entire world and anyone can now be affected, you do not even need to enter the house any longer. i personally feel the actors in the first were on a completely different level, as was the quality of the story line, the sequel just did NOT live up to the original, the best part for me was seeing Gellar for the literal 3 minutes she was on the screen. If you're tight for cash, don't waste the money on this one, catch it on Video, but if you're bored and want some mindless horror/thrills, then this movie will satisfy your tastes
The Wicker Man (2006)
The ending makes this a waste of time........
The wicker man remake had great potential of being a good movie, however, it fails...miserably. The entire movie is a waste of time, because from the minute Cage sets foot on the island, the islanders could have locked him up and waited for the time to start the ritual. There is no reason for him to spend days searching for his child that is actually not missing. It is just cruel, to both the character AND the viewers. I could not believe i sat through an hour and a half just to see him burn with no real reason. Other viewers of the remake have also brought up the point that they are a bee colony, and it looked as though they had many bees and much honey, there seemed to be no real reason to sacrifice Cage's character. Unlike the original which dealt with growing fruits on an island in/near Scotland, which would require some help from a ritual sacrifice.
All in all, i felt the acting in the movie was good, the story line was solid...until the ending. Then when you are introduced to the insanity and craziness that is the plot, the movie drops to nothing special. if you MUST see this, wait for video.
