Good story ruined by drivel
25 April 2023
Overall, the acting is fine, but the movie has lots of uninteresting padding, which is typical of many movies made for Prime and Apple (this one is a Prime Original).

It was a difficult movie to sit through as we hear things like "god is always with you", and the like. Sadly, we're on our own, and when remarkable things happen, it's because we are capable of remarkable things.

If you're losing interest during the drawn out character development, as I was, just fast-forward about 20 minutes to where the family is getting onto the plane.

Would have been a much better movie if it had spent less time on the religious stuff.

Clearly outlines how to get out of the rat race sooner
5 November 2022
I thoroughly enjoyed this real-life documentary about a middle-class, overworked, over indebted, fairly typical North American family, who are stuck in a world where buying stuff and keeping up with the Joneses is the norm.

We learn about the Financial Independence Retire Early (FIRE) philosophy, and how changing our view of what's important in life can, with the right skill-set and determination, change our lives.

I particularly liked how when they made a change in their lives, the time to retire was displayed, easily conveying the concept of how making changes can help us escape the rat race sooner.

Too clean, clever cinematography trick, I couldn't care less
5 November 2022
I like war movies, but they have to be semi-realistic to enjoy them. In this movie it looked like everyone had just had a shower before the camera started rolling. Compare against "All Quiet on the Western Front" on Netflix, and you'll see what I mean.

Yes, the one long simulated shot was cool; for about 10 minutes, then it was just a drag, it got more uninteresting as the movie went on, and on, and...

As for the main characters, I had no sense of wanting them to survive, zero connection was developed. I just didn't care.

I would put this movie in the same category as Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk; too clean, too artsy-fartsy, unrealistic, little character development, long, and boring. Neither of these movies will I ever bother watching again.

Tenet (2020)

Another interesting topic ruined by a loud annoying soundtrack
2 August 2022
Per the title of the review, annoying, loud, droning, soundtracks have become a Christopher Nolan trademark. As soon as I see his name on the movie, its off my list of movies to see at the theater. Tenet was one such movie. I watched it this evening on Netflix. I had to turn the volume right down and switch on the subtitles. So, now I've seen it. I will never watch it again, nor will I recommend it, and its all down to the horrible soundtrack.

In summary, Christopher Nolan does it again; makes a movie on an interesting topic and then spreads droning, loud, painful, music all over the dialogue, great. Thanks for nothing!

Smoking Ad in a Sci-fi Movie Wrapper
26 March 2020
I couldn't get past the cigarettes - utterly ridiculous! They were stupid 50 years ago, they are stupid today, and in 3022 they'll still be stupid. I suspect that a major sponsor of the movie was a manufacture of cancer sticks.

One star is all the movie deserves, and that's for the poster that sucked me in.

Learn from others' mistakes - don't waste time or money on Ad Astra!
2 October 2019
So much has been said already about how bad this movie is, I'm just posting this as further confirmation that any reviews of three stars and less are in the right ballpark. Ratings of 4 to 5 stars are, I guess, from people who have a preference for slow and boring story-lines, lifeless characters, and stupid and/or bad science. Ratings of 6 and above, are from people whom I could not relate to on probably any level on any subject, or, they are paid to write good reviews, or they are written by robots who have no choice but to write what the algorithm tells them to do.

I won't be watching this when it's "free" on Netflix.

Crap, and then some!

My actual rating: Crap++

A wonderful examination of friendship

I highly recommend this movie to anyone who has enjoyed the Laurel & Hardy films and shorts. The acting, script, sets, and directing are excellent. It also has many funny moments.

Adding my "1 Star" to help ensure the movie investors gets the message

A very disappointing movie that is below par in every way: effects, acting, story-line, continuity, music. Such a shame.

Dunkirk (2004)
10/10
Way better than the 2017 Nolan artsy fartsy version
14 December 2017
I watched this dramatization some years back and thought it did an excellent job of telling the real-life story, capturing the desperation of the retreat, case in point, only smoke bombs for one group of soldiers tasked with holding back the German tanks!

Buy it on Blu-ray or DVD if you can find it. Perhaps its also downloadable. Its well worth the time spent watching it.

After watching this re-enactment, I found Nolan's 2017 Dunkirk to be an utter disappointment. It greatly saddened me to see how the Dunkirk story could be so badly told, and more so when I read reviews about how it gives you a sense of what war is like - rubbish. These people really should watch the 2004 Dunkirk dramatization and Saving Private Ryan, and I'd also recommend Schindler's List.

Dunkirk (2017)
1/10
Looking forward to the remake; by another writer/director
23 July 2017
The movie was a huge disappointment.

Here's some of the things that have been said about this movie - none of them are true:

"A technical masterpiece" "An absolutely outstanding depiction" "A must See" "Best movie Of summer 2017" "Best war film ever made" "A must see film" "Dunkirk is an authentic..." "Dunkirk is the most realistic war-movie ever made"

If I had the time, for my own personal viewing I would re-work this movie by first re-ordering the overlapping and out of sequence scenes, and then kill the entire droning musical score (obviously it would have to be on a track that I can turn off). Just these simple changes would make it a far better watch. To fine tune the movie further, I would shorten the many long pointless pauses, when people in real life would either do or say something.

The evacuation from Dunkirk was of course a real event, a significant element of which was the hundreds of small vessels and regular folk who took to the sea to being their boys back home – all of that hardly came through, nor did the true seriousness of the situation on the beaches and in the town, and the fighting that was going on in an attempt to slow the approaching army down.

All in all, I think this movie is a p-poor-job. I wish I'd waited until it was on Netflix - I could have at least been editing some of my photos at the same time.

Do I think you should watch this at the movie theatre: No!

I gave up!
19 May 2009
My summary/title line says all I really need to say about this film, however, I need to add more lines else it won't be posted, so here goes...

The DVD cover quite clearly stated "The Best War Movie Since Saving Private Ryan", well, at the time of writing this post Enemy at the Gates (2001) has an IMDb rating of 7.4/10, Flags of Our Fathers (2006) 7.2/10, The Lost Battalion (2001-TV) 7.1/10, and Band of Brothers (2001-TV) 9.6/10. Miracle at St. Anna has an IMDb rating of 5.8/10, so a fair few people disagree with the boast made on the DVD cover.

I regret that I have nothing at all good to say about this movie. I tend to judge things as a whole e.g. the quality of the acting, the editing, the story, the sound and video effects, and the musical score. In this movie all of these were sub-standard.

Also, there is an enormous amount of subtitles (when the Germans or Italians are speaking). I exclaimed, "Why do they do this?" My son suggested that the director probably thinks that it makes it more realistic. I pointed out that during the war; writing did not appear across someone's chest as they spoke in a non-English language.

That should be enough.

I feel like I've been conned
22 April 2007
Like many others in the 'Hated it' group of reviews, I do not understand how this film can be rated so highly. I watched it with my wife, and typically we rate films quite differently, but this one gets a thumbs down from both of us.

The movie did not flow well, the acting (or directing) was very poor, the plot was all over the place, and was unbearable at times. It took us less than ten minutes into the film before we started to question it's quality. I simply couldn't have cared less for the characters, and a nuke to end the whole world, and this film at about 15 minutes in, would have at least resulted in a happy ending for this viewer.

This is the third movie that we rented based on high ratings and claims of superb acting, story, directing and cinematography, and been utterly disappointed. We all know that there will be film companies out there writing their own rave reviews, but I'm beginning to question if there are now 'rave review factories' fixing the movie ratings on IMDb. Just as is done with internet search engines. I simply don't believe that a movie can get such great reviews and then so many bad ones.

P.S. Where do I claim my refund?

UPDATE: I was so unhappy about paying for this movie rental, I told the store from where I rented it, and they said my next rental is FREE!! So, in effect, I did get my money back. Check with your local video store, they might have a similar policy.

The Net 2.0 (2006 Video)

Don't be fooled - this is BAD as in awful
25 July 2006
The dot com bubble burst for this one. What a waste of time and money. If I churned out rubbish like this in my job, my career would be over.

The Net 2.0 was a waste of the electrons required to run my DVD player and remote control. After about half-an-hour, I ended up scanning through this movie(!) at 40x speed just to get it over with.

The story was in-line with the acting, effects, and cinematography, i.e. very poor indeed. Now don't get me wrong, you may be thinking that there was nothing at all about The Net 2.0 that has any merit, and you would be right, so, DON'T get me wrong, it is a truly awful movie.

In my opinion the DVD case is worth more than the DVD and it's contents. Breaking the DVD into itsy bitsy pieces would be an improvement.

War of the Worlds (2005 Video)

A waste of your time and money.
24 July 2006
I rented this movie based on the many "glowing reviews". I was conned! The movie was bad from start to finish, the acting, effects, flow, sets, music, and sound were bad, cheap, and poorly done. By the way, I could do better, and that's based on the fact that I couldn't do worse.

I am disappointed that the first reviews that I read about this movie were so good; I find it difficult to believe that these initial reviews were genuine. Having seen the movie, I find it difficult to reconcile what I saw on the screen with the reviews that encouraged me to rent it.

How did they get the money to make such a bad movie?

The biggest goof that I noticed was the mug that rented and then watched the movie - me!

Another of Asylum's attempts to mislead - avoid!
7 February 2006
Just like Asylum's version of War Of The Worlds, this film has the following characteristics:

  • Poor acting - Bad effects - Continuity errors all over the place - A few 'glowing reviews' that cannot possibly be real - Timed to coincide with the release of a similar big-budget movie

After the first 20 minutes I had to stop watching it, else my foot would have gone through the screen.

It's not the few dollars that I paid to rent this rubbish, but the fact that I feel cheated once again.

Remember the name: 'Asylum' - the movie company to avoid.
