Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments (2016)
What in the devil is going on?
There hasn't been an episode where I'm not chastising the 'acting'. Where on G*d's green earth did they find some of these people? Most of the time I sit with my mouth gaping open because I can't believe what I'm seeing and hearing and that which has made the cut. As an adult who enjoy fantasy-style movies and series I do appreciate that 'some' allowances need to be made...but come on! Katherine McNamara (Clary) is not cut out for this role and has made her character extremely unlikeable. Dominic Sherwood (Jace) comes in at a close second with Matthew Daddario (Alec) hot on his heels. The whole thing plays out like a low budget soap opera geared towards mundane teenagers. Just bad...bad bad bad.
Worst Cooks in America (2010)
What did I just watch?
Watched this show for the 1st time at season 18. The only real entertainment & laughs I got was from the banter between Alton &Leo towards the end of the show. I mean could someone pls explain to me, how ANYONE who spills macaroni into a dirty sink, amid sponges, food bits et al & scoops it out w/ their hands & reuses it not only wins the 'best dish' but also the top cook of the challenge! Later on she loses a fingernail in the food & yet wins again AND ends up the big winner? That can't be real? People being kept on that spit food in their hands, open bags with their teeth? All the while the 'chefs' look on? Show some pride & dignity in the art of cooking. This is NOT the way to start people off in the culinary craft. Amusing and teachable moments happen naturally in the kitchen without the need for added 'whatever'. If you, as chefs, are willing to let saliva, contamination, fingernails and whatever else slide...you truly aren't deserving of the title 'chef'.
Coroner (2019)
Where do I start?
It all started out just fine. I could see it had potential. I mean, it IS television after all. So you let a few things slide right? Episodes pass, you start to wonder, you think, okay it's going to stop now, all this deliberate politically correct insertion of characters to appease the masses of those that would otherwise bellyache. More episodes pass and still, television does what it does, overloads the senses, defies logic and absolutely throws legitimacy out the window. But THIS? What you're left with is a complete and utter mess of characters with just about eve newsworthy 'woke' and/or enlightened scenario you can digest in a 1hr time frame. You've got veterans with PTSD, various people with psychosis, seniors with dementia, gay men, gay couples, lesbian couples, interracial couples, unfaithful spouses, single moms (choosing artificial insemination), illegal migrants, abusive white foster parents w/ minority victims, drug use, alcoholism, misunderstood young offenders, female serial killers, and yes of course a French guy. To top it off, I haven't even touched on the actual mess of writing and inaccuracies regarding chain of evidence or who is allowed in the morgue and procedures therein. Or when it comes to talking to possible witnesses after a major mass shooting. It just goes on and on. Actually, I could go on but that might give the show away....pffft....but then again, it's CBC...so much lost and wasted potential.
The Queen's Gambit (2020)
Thank You!
Thank you, thank you, thank you....finally a mini series that captured my attention from start to finish without any insertion of 'oh please, here we go again'. In the beginning I would think 'okay, right about now something 'Hollywood' is going to happen' but it didn't. It stayed true to the story, the plot and continued on faithfully throughout. It is filled with suspense, anticipation, twist and emotion enough to leave you wanting more. I binge watched. Almost wish I hadn't. It's bitter sweet that I'm done.
The Dig (2021)
A 7 ...only because of Fiennes
The movie starts out very well...intriguing, has you developing possible scenarios in your head. It's just okay. The characters are likeable, the plot isn't 'exciting' but if you're watching this movie, it's obvious you're not in it for 'excitement and fast-paced action'! But then it crashes, in slow motion. And of course, in good old Hollywood fashion, the token 'gay' representation gets thrown in there. Why? My G*d is that going to happen with EVERY SINGLE MOVIE now? It's so painfully obvious and it absolutely destroys the 'flow' of the movie. A 'side plot' just to make room for political correctness. How utterly pathetic. How I long for just an honest to goodness 'really good movie' based on plot and performance......The whole storyline and basis for the movie got thrown out the window with 'side stories' from that point on. Very sad.
Allied (2016)
Love the Concept-the Movie not so Much
Personally, I love the old WW type movies with spies and espionage et al. So this was right up my alley. But one fatal flaw in this whole movie brought it down, really fast. The insert of Hollywood's 'politically correct' gay couple. WHY? Why do they insist on doing that? In the WWII era let alone the military, it NEVER would have been allowed much less displayed at a bar, among officers? A seemingly small detail but yes, it began the ruin of the authenticity of the movie. From there every detail became suspect and I started 'judging' instead of enjoying. A word of advice to writers/producers...just knock it off. Stay true to the time you're filming about. Your audience KNOWS.
Johnny Mnemonic (1995)
It's 26 years old!!
Haha...I love some of the other reviews complaining about the special effects, the props, the scenery etc., forgetting that this is a movie from over 26 years ago! Geesh. The concept/storyline is good, the acting? Not so much. Some scenes are 'groan worthy'. Keanu Reeves is still relatively young in this. What blew me away is the relation to what happened in the movie to what is happening now in the world (2020/2021) regarding an illness/cure vs virus/vaccine and the fact that the movie takes place in 2021. Anyways, it's entertaining enough and I personally like Reeves. A word of advice before 'critiquing', stop using today's standards for movies created decades ago.
Instant Hotel (2017)
Scoring with hesitation...
I love the concept. This type of show could offer so much entertainment and helpful information for travelers BUT the whole scoring system, is just plain bad. Perhaps if they had actual 'guests' stay in the host homes, and scrutinize/score them it would be easier to swallow. Having fellow 'hosts' visit each other's homes doesn't lay the groundwork for honest critique. Regardless of that, my husband and I are getting a kick out of the folks and their very different personalities. I'm just not sure if it's truly 'reality' tv or is it rehearsed and are these actually 'instant hotels'? Anyways, some lite entertainment at the end of the day. But if (like some are saying) it starts to become to full of 'drama', then we'll be switching the channel.
Wisdom of the Crowd (2017)
You lost me
Was a bit curious to see what the show would entail. The first episode interested me enough to watch it again. However, by the 4th episode, it has become clear that this is a VERY left leaning show and this episode (anyone who isn't a democrat is a neo-nazi) clearly demonstrated dragging everyone through the mud that doesn't support them. I won't be watching again. What started out as a desperate father searching for truth, has become a one-sided, politically motivated series. The strange thing is, once that is done, you can probably expect half the viewer base to disappear. Strange they would take that risk. The 'acting', if you call it that, is fair at best. The cast seemed so ready to jump in with their 'anti-right' views that it clearly indicated it was more personal than professional. I can't see it being renewed, but hey, this is 'Hollywood'...right?
