Open Water 2: Adrift (2006)
Much better than you'd expect
When I saw this it was not called OPEN WATER 2, it was called ADRIFT. And though the movie has some problematic acting (c'mon, it's the director's first film), I thought it was pretty cool. The look of the movie is really impressive and I liked the creepy set up. The fact that there's a baby on the boat is one of the scariest things I can imagine for a mom.
I agree with some other viewers that logically the conclusion the characters come to at the end should have been reached earlier. But that said, it's a pretty tense movie with some great widescreen photography and the sound design is also well done. Give it a chance, this is a pretty good simple thriller!
Cry for Help (2005)
Crazy movie!
I saw this at the Screamfest horror festival when I visited LA -- I'm not sure it's a horror movie, more a crazy comedy with some very bizarre and offensive things in it. Basically Sam Lloyd (who I know from "Scrubs") plays a hippie who ends up being part of the rapture and meets Jesus. There was one scene of Jesus stabbing a guy in heaven that I couldn't get out of my head for a week. I talked to the people who made it after the screening who told me they played it at Sundance and a bunch of other places.
This may not be a movie for everyone (especially if you're religious) but I laughed a lot in it and it definitely is the work of some very talented (and sick) people. 10 out of 10, if only for Jesus stabbing that poor guy.
Cyclone (1978)
Hilarious
I saw the DVD of this one last week -- the sight of Carrol Baker tearing at her clothes during the rain storm, that awful guy from "Hart to Hart" and a bunch of other Euro-trash actors made this a joyride of a cannibal movie. I really liked the cheesed-out score from Riz Ortolani and the fate of the little black dog. I also have to give props to this movie for featuring real sharks that are fed bundles of clothes with meat in them for the attack scenes!! I couldn't believe it! The production is very third world feeling -- just a gloss of danger to it all.
Get the new DVD (from Synapse) -- it looks great and has a bunch of stuff not on the other versions.
