Bug (2006)
Don't waste your time or money unless you like making fun of movies.
I can't properly express the disappointment I felt after watching this terrible film. Though I went in expecting a 'monster' movie of sorts, the lack of Bugs did not in and of itself destroy the film. The poor script, editing and acting did that alone. What was most irritating was the ambiguity left. We're not left wondering whether or not there were bugs (it's clear there weren't) but whether any of the characters or they're apparent identities were real. At some point the filmmaker needs to let the audience know what they just saw. The glimpses at the end of the credits only added to the confusion instead of cleverly revealing the reality of the situation. And now for the editing.... Darrin Navarro should have been fired. So should anyone else who screened the film and gave it the OK. I counted eight (8) times where the boom microphone was clearly visible in the shot. In one scene where Peter and Agnes are talking in the doorway, the mic extends into the shot and remains there for a good 30-40 sec!!!!! Once is excusable for a film with this overall production value..twice for a low-budget film, maybe. But 8 is entirely absurd. I must say though that I did have fun laughing at the film for this very reason, and otherwise would have walked out and demanded my money were I not waiting for another hilariously glimpse of the crew at work.
Fate (2003)
Low-budget gem.
Fate first appears as cop/thriller rip of Seven or Silence of the Lambs, but offers a little more than you'd think. While the characters are a bit stereotyped, Lee Majors and the rest really do the best with what they were given. The extremely low budget for this film is easily overlooked by Ace Cruz's ability to make a visually pleasing film. Many films today are over-budgeted and given to Hollywood hacks that throw money at big name actors and special effects and end up being no better than this film. (eg: Mr. and Mrs. Smith, American Treasure, or Daredevil.) Fate had several unexpected twists and offers a fresh look into the psyche of a serial killer. Rent it at Blockbuster and be sure to watch the making-of.
