Going Overboard (1989)
Worst movie I can remember watching
I always passed by this movie on different streaming services, and I've always thought about givingit a watch, but I usually just scroll past it. Well unfortunately I made the mistake of giving it a chance one night.
I know this was Adam Sandler's first movie, so I wasn't expecting anything great. Other than some cameos in SNL movies like Coneheads, Billy Madison is the first staring role movie I can think remember of his, that was actually good.
Sandman warns us right out of the gate that this is a "no budget movie" with a loosely written story. So good job of setting low expectations, they just weren't low enough.
Sandler plays Shecky Moskovitz. As stereotypical of a Jewish name you could possibly come up with. He's a waiter on a cruise ship that seems to be occupied mainly of beauty pageant contestants. He's also a wannabe standup comedian. Also on the ship is a famous comedian Shecky idolizes, Dicky Diamond (these names keep getting worse & worse). Dicky Diamond is pretty much an a-hole who thinks he's great. He's easy to hate because he isn't funny in the least bit, and he treats Shecky like crap. Which is a common theme throughout the movie.
Shecky is supposed to come across as a semi shy guy, who's humble and just looking for a chance to make everyone laugh. At times though, he comes across as a jerk himself because he's so focused on being a successful comedian.
There is no real plot or story to the movie, so it's a little difficult to really even explain. Dicky Diamond gets locked in his bedroom bathroom, and everybody just assumes he's dead, mourns his loss, and moves on. Meanwhile he's just sitting on the toilet banging on the door. Shecky sees this as an opportunity because the boat needs someone to be the entertainment. At one point there's 2 terrorists that show up to kidnap Dicky Diamond's wife, who is apparently a contestant in the pageant.
If by now you're struggling to follow what I'm saying, that's basically the feeling you have while watching this movie.
You will not laugh once. Or if you do, it won't be because that was the intended response, it will most likely be because something is so bad that you start laughing at the idea of sitting through this entire movie.
If actors were judged off their first movie, Sandler's career would have ended after this. But luckily for him, he became such a huge star that most people don't know, or forget this movie even exists. I wish I were one of those people. Unfortunately I'm not, and I sat through this entire movie.
Do yourself a favor and don't even waste your time with this movie.
Meatballs Part II (1984)
Possibly the worst movie I've ever watched (edit: 2nd worse now that I've watched Going Overboard)
Went back and watched this one again because I had completely forgotten what it was about, other than being a sequel to the original.
The original had more of a realistic sense of what summer camp is like. This had none of that. Not sure there's a single joke that's good in this entire movie. And there's a random alien subplot for some reason. Basically one camp is going broke. Camp across the lake wants to buy them out. So they'll settle it how any normal people would, a boxing match. In the meantime, the young kids are busy trying to teach the alien to fit in and not be noticed.
Basically everything that made the original Meatballs a classic, is non existent in this sequel.
I'm having a hard time thinking of a worse movie.
Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood (2019)
Good acting, mediocre movie
I'm not sure why this movie got so much praise during awards season. It's a pretty mediocre movie. The acting from Pitt and DiCaprio is good but the story is weak and pretty boring. Margot Robbie is pretty forgettable as Sharon Tate, basically all she does is smile & dance in basically all of her scenes. DiCaprio plays the part of an actor realizing he's on the downside of his career well. Brad Pitt plays the calm & cool stunt double well. Not sure though how this was the role that got him an award compared to some of the other better movies he's been in.
Basically this movie feels like it got such a positive reception because it's Hollywood stroking Hollywood. It's not a terrible movie, DiCaprio & Pitt have good chemistry together. But the story is pretty weak and the movie kind of drags on.
Chad (2021)
Terribly unfunny
If the commercials haven't already turned you off, 5 mins of watching a female try to do a whiny boy's voice will do it. In no way is this show funny or entertaining. It won't make it past 1 season.
