Big Mouth (2017)
Hilarious!
The first couple of episodes I watched kind of made me cringe and consider not watching anymore but I love all the voice actors involved so I gave it another go. I binge watched the rest of the episodes in one night and got in the groove and found it to be hilarious. Sure, there are parts that are so raunchy and wrong that it I cringed, but that's part of the appeal, right? It captures so perfectly how you felt during that own time in your life that even if you have tried to block it out, you'll remember your own puberty days. I really, really appreciate that the writers included the female experience at the same level as the male experience. Often shows lack a female perspective around these topics and to see it here was refreshing.
I'm Sorry. (2017)
A fun way to spend the time
I started watching this show because Jason Mantzoukas is in it and I love anything he's in. Sure enough, he is wonderful in this show. A little more toned down than usual, but it works here. I wish there was more Mantzoukas in this show because the scenes with him and Andrea Savage are wonderful. I love how they riff off each other and it just feels comfortable to watch.
Now I don't want to give the impression that the parts without Mantzoukas aren't good, because they are. Savage is funny and pleasant and seems like someone I would know. I can relate to her and the situations she finds herself in. I do find the parts with her parents to be a bit tedious but other than that, I recommend watching this.
The House (2017)
Worth watching to see Mantzoukas
This movie was cliche and silly and should have been so much better since Will Farrell and Amy Poehler were in it but it fell flat. The whole first part of the movie I kept thinking "how can there be a whole movie about these people opening up a casino in the suburbs?" I'll tell you how - by making it progressively more and more ridiculous. Now, getting more and more ridiculous and over the top can work in a movie if it is set up properly but this movie did not do that. The premise was silly and the execution was poor.
Now you might notice I gave this 6 stars despite my bad review and that is only because Jason Mantzoukas saves this film from being a complete dud. Mantzoukas does an amazing job at being over the top, yet relatable. He steals every scene he is in and kept me watching.
Adult Beginners (2014)
Nick Kroll is surprisingly sweet and sympathic
Jake (Nick Kroll) a guy who's been living the bachelor start up life but finds himself without money or friends after his tech investment start up project goes belly up. He goes back to his childhood home where his older sister, Justine (Rose Byrne), lives with her husband and 3 year old son. She's pregnant, trying to sell her house, discontent with her job, and isn't particularly happy to see her brother who only shows up when he needs something. Nevertheless, she lets him stay and he takes over as nanny to her 3 year old son.
This set up had some really good potential. It could have been a good story about a guy who finds himself at a loss without a job, living in his hometown, and not knowing what to do with his life but the movie falls flat at really exploring the themes it sets up. It splits its focus between Jake and his sister without really fleshing out either of them enough. Too many elements are introduced (learning to take care of his nephew, Justine's dissatisfaction with her job, the marriage issues, Justine feeling betrayed by her brother for not being around, Jake's lonliness) that it all gets lost. If the writers had focused on just one or two of these things, the movie would have been stronger. The ending is so rushed and the stakes so low, that I felt kind of cheated.
I also have to mention that I have a huge pet peeve about the fact that Justine was pregnant, but barely looked pregnant throughout the movie.
Kroll and Byrne do a good job with the script they are given which left me feeling again like this movie could have been so much better. I found Kroll amazingly likable and sweet and for me, that made this movie worth watching.
