The Last Ship (2014)
Paid for by the US Navy!
Cmon! The navy saves the world from the even-worse pandemic?! Give me a break. The US military does pay for positive portrayals in movies, but this is ridiculous! "A Navy team sets out for the Arctic with two doctors, and realize the safest place to develop a vaccine for this deadly disease is out at sea on their ship "! Golly! If only the US Navy decided to create world peace, or provide decent healthcare to all, or solve the drug addiction issue, or maybe, just reduce the divorce rate in the US!!! Really, what kind of people agree to make this sort of movie?! I know science is boring, but the Navy socks it to the pandemic? Wow.
Zone blanche (2017)
What forest?
Look up Villefranche on your map-the Villefranche SE of Paris. Forest??? Wolves?? Seriously?? This is really imaginative! The forest around the real Villefranche must be shaker than Central Park NYC.
Murder on the Orient Express (2017)
Good actors but not a good movie
Kevin Branagh is a great actor. But not in this movie. Not only did he fail to delivere a convincing French accent... but he also failed to deliver an authentic Poirot, otherwise we might forget about the accent.
The real Poirot is all brains and no brawn. But Branagh/Poirot chases a suspect around a train testle (it holds up the train just fine but is so rotten the suspect falls through the wood).
Branagh's Poirot is weary, he needs a vacation. He is tired, he is devastated by the evil he is deciphering, he's overwrought. Alright, he can play it this way, but there's no payoff. There's not really any thrill along the way, and the ending fizzles. The whole movie seemed tired and listless.
Positives, a cast of big names. And as a period piece, it did that well. Nice costumes and sets.
Paddington 2 (2017)
Really funny family film
I just saw P2 at a matinee, though less than 10 children there. THEY laughed and laughed. Actually, I laughed and laughed as well ! The cast is the treasure in this show, from the outstanding Sally Hawkins to Papa Bear himself, Hugh Bonneville. And how is that Hugh Grant has a thing acting as the failed actor? Well, he's over the top and wonderful in this flic. Oddly, Paddington himself didn't overwhelm me. He's supposed to see the best in everybody, and often does, but you don't really see him do this with the more challenging people (other than Nuckles) like Felix. All in all, a fun film with lots of laughs.
In Search of Fellini (2017)
American sounding Italians
Lucy"s first boyfriend, random people in the street, Fellini's assistant Mario - they all seem to be Americans speaking English with, well, Italianish accents. It's very distracting. I appreciate that it's an American movie. But since Fellini is used as a sort of muse in the film, some authenticity would be nice.
