Mockbuster by The Asylum - That says it all
1 December 2020
I tend to judge a movie by what it claims to be. You don't expect Doctor Zhivago to be a porn movie, you don't expect the SpongeBob movie to win an Oscar and that's exactly why you don't expect "The Da Vinci Treasure" to play in the same league as a Hollywood production.

Make no mistake, this is not what I would conventionally call a "good movie" and I won't even start the old "so bad it's whatever" stereotype here. It's a mockbuster by The Asylum and anyone who has ever watched any of their movies knows what to expect already during the opening credits.

I found this mildly entertaining, obviously trying to cash in on the success of "The Da Vinci Code" (although towards the end I had a slight reminiscence of Indiana Jones movies). So what the gunfire was CGI, so what the story was totally ludicrous (I admit I did not try to follow the very, very far-fetched clues). Da Vinci and Afghanistan? WTF?

I have watched worse movies, including some who took themselves more seriously than this one. But perhaps this is just my bad taste.

Not sure what to make of this one
24 April 2017
What always amazes me when I read non-professional reviews (and yes, I am non-professional, too) of B-movies is that they usually fall into one of two categories. The ones give it a complete bashing, complain about everything from acting to post-production, the others try hard to squeeze it into the somewhat outworn so-bad-it's-good category. A minority sometimes tries to regard them as hidden gems that are bound to become cult movies.

Yes, cast was definitely overacting, possibly on purpose, I am not so sure about this. I am non-native in English but this sheriff character left me wondering if people in Texas really speak like this. And yes, the inbred family could have used better costumes and/or wigs, the plot could have been more coherent and logical and the sound could have been better, but hey, this is a low-budget horror movie of which species I have certainly witnessed worse specimens. The movie makers made sure it did not lack any of the stereotypical ingredients, some gore, some T & A (hot Davina Joy, who looked too good for the role) and not failing to throw in the odd corrupt small-town sheriff.

I actually somewhat enjoyed this movie. It was certainly odd and would have benefited from a higher budget, but as low-budget slasher movies go it was watchable. Just don't expect a polished, coherent Hollywood production with a budget to cover all those flaws that my co-reviewers and me so ruthlessly point out.

Soul swapping for beginners
29 August 2016
Warning: Spoilers
As far as softcore porn movies go, this one is actually quite nice. It has attractive actors (well maybe except Paul Case), which is always a plus in this kind of movies. Acting is of course a bit wooden, but we don't watch this for the acting, do we? Plotwise the movie is rather fun, because the plot features some kind of soul/personality swapping thing. Mitch (Kevin Patrick's character) knocks over Dirk (Paul Case's character) with his car. They then magically swap souls, i.e. Mitch is now Dirk. Mitch features Dirk's character (including a sleazy Southern accent) and as he was a jerk, Mitch is now a jerk, too. During the following sex scenes a few more soul swaps take place, and consequently Dirk's soul travels across almost the whole cast. Now this is the point when I started to get confused. I tried to make sense of it as follows: Mitch with Dirk's soul has sex with Lisa (Tiffany Tyler) and they swap, so Mitch has now Lisa's soul and Lisa has Dirk's soul. So far so good. But then Lisa with Dirk's soul has sex with Sean (Rocco Reed) and they swap souls, so Sean has now Dirk's soul and Lisa has Sean's soul. But now it starts to become confusing: Alex (Kiara Diane) has an amulet which makes this whole soul swapping business stop and while having sex with Sean (with Dirk's soul) she manages to make Dirk's soul leave Sean. So Sean is now himself again. But wait a sec - hasn't got Lisa Sean's soul? And Mitch has still Lisa's soul? I have contemplated this existential question and came to the conclusion that there are only two possibilities: Either the amulet transferred all souls into their appropriate bodies or I am trying to make sense of something that is not supposed to make sense. Probably the latter.

Final verdict: I had fun watching this.

Great noir
26 February 2007
Warning: Spoilers
This film noir has it all. A lot of wonderful night shots, shadows which are used as a filming technique and also symbolically darken the life of Robinson's character. Bennett gives us a superb femme fatale who only differs from some of the other famous femme fatales of the period in the way that she is not self-motivating. The criminal energy lies to a large extent in her boyfriend and for the majority of the movie she merely plays along. As a matter of course the end of a film noir is never really surprising. The production code made sure that every character who is portrayed as "bad" or criminal gets their due punishment and so we know that Christopher Cross will not get away either.

In two scenes in the movie the gramophone record is getting stuck at one and the same spot during a love song, repeating the word "love" over and over. I found this a great way of implying that what love may be felt by the characters (Kitty towards Johnny and Christopher towards Kitty) will ultimately lead nowhere and only to their doom.

Worthy addition to the series
15 January 2007
I suppose I am adding this comment as counterweight to the only other existing comment about this episode of the excellent Granada Holmes series.

While not the best of the series it certainly stands out as one of the better ones and is infinitely better than some other Holmes adaptations we have been subjected to in the past decades. An original and classic Sherlock Holmes story is not so much about a detective solving a murder case. We are not talking whodunnit here. People who are looking for that sort of thing had better look out for the odd Agatha Christie movie. A Holmes story is mostly about atmosphere, be it the foggy, nostalgic, and mysterious atmosphere of Victorian London, or, in this case, the lonesome, mystic and eerie air of the Cornish countryside.

Anyone who is slightly acquainted with the canon of Sherlock Holmes stories will know that all occurrences have a scientific and logical explanation. So there is no reason to dwell unnecessarily long on the possibility of something supernatural happening. Of course the astute viewer will have identified the criminal rather early but contrary to the plots of classic whodunnits some of the best Holmes stories feature a criminal who only appears towards the end of the story and is usually some strange and outlandish character from the victim's past. In a whodunnit we would resent such a solution but in a Holmes story which is mostly about atmosphere we do not.

Good adaptation
3 January 2007
Although in some parts not too faithful to the original story this is a good Holmes adaptation. Everyone involved is making a good effort and the the finished product is solid enough.

One thing I did definitely not like is the way Tonga was presented. I am aware that he was portrayed as "so deeply marked with all bestiality and cruelty (and that) his small eyes glowed and burned with a sombre light, and his thick lips were writhed back from his teeth, which grinned and chattered at us with half animal fury" (quote from the original story). I'm sure I can't apply 21st century political correctness to a 19th century story but the scenes where Small fed his companion with raw meat in an earth hole were definitely not necessary in a 1983 production.

Still, this being the only thing that bothers me a bit, this is a great movie. Ian Richardson comes close to my idea of Holmes and is second in line for my favourite Holmes, Brett AND Rathbone being in the fist place.

Great
1 January 2007
It has been claimed that Vasili Livanov, the actor who plays Holmes in this excellent Soviet TV series from the 80's, is one of the best Holmes actors. I do not speak Russian but I was able to get hold of a Russian DVD with English subtitles. This episode is a version of "The Final Problem" which is accurately told although there have been some additions and alterations. And yet you can feel that these small alterations do not contradict the spirit of the original story. This TV series is able to portray the atmosphere of the Victorian daily life perfectly as I imagine it and certainly stands on one level with contemporary British productions.

OK action movie with some reservations
2 December 2006
Warning: Spoilers
OK, maybe I'm missing something here....but I rather think I'm not. Let me get this straight; this is a nice action/disaster movie on the surface. As other commentators have put it, well-worn plot with meteorites about to hit earth and only a couple of days to save civilisation. I am not American, mind, but for an American movie I do see some racial stereotypes repeated over and over here. What we see is a black fanatic church leader making a point of racism in the U.S. So far so good. Further, we see the stereotypical black criminal played by Ice-T. Of course they hate each other because one killed the other's family, but in the end you have what the white audience expects: Two black guys trying to kill each other. Of course the ones that are really concerned with saving earth are the white U.S. military, the white scientist and the white, blonde, female FBI agent. Reese is portrayed as more or less only being concerned with his vengeance. The mole in the military is a white assistant to the general and, everyone else save one in the military staff being white, there's one black guy whom we are supposed to suspect.

OK, maybe I'm taking that too seriously for a cheapie video production but I think you don't have to make it THAT obvious. On a superficial level I did enjoy this movie. There was some OK action although the special effects creating the asteroid hitting San Francisco (at least they spared New York this time which was probably already destroyed a dozen times) can probably be reproduced on a home PC. When I thought about it further the above mentioned reservations spoiled it a bit for me.

Sherlock Holmes: The Sign of Four (1968)
Season 2, Episode 15

Average
19 October 2006
Warning: Spoilers
I suppose you have to put this into perspective - after all it is a TV production - but I wasn't too convinced of this adaptation; the Granada one with Jeremy Brett is infinitely better. I'm sure budget restraints have kept the producers from including a flashback in order to show the actual background behind the storyline. And yet I feel that especially in this story the flashback is an important means to enable you to appreciate the character Jonathan Small's thirst for revenge.

Cushing as Holmes is OK but what he definitely lacks is the unconventional air and the charisma that surrounds someone like Jeremy Brett. He does his job solidly enough, though.

One of the best film versions of the HOUND
28 September 2006
I won't deny this is my favourite Sherlock Holmes yarn. I must have read the story a dozen times and I own 10 film versions of it. IMO this is one of the best. True, they didn't quite stick to the story at times but in contrast to some other productions they did with the crucial parts of it. Although you can make a point of it that a film is quite a different art form and it is thus no offence to alter the storyline of a novel when adapting it to a movie I am somewhat sensitive when it comes to Sherlock Holmes adaptations. Although Richardson is in this movie not the epitome of my idea of Holmes he did a good job. As did everyone else of the cast. Another thing that struck me was that this is by far the scariest version of the HOUND I've seen. All in all it even surpasses the Brett version even though Brett generally did a better job at playing Holmes.

Watchable
31 July 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Wontner is not my favourite Holmes; to me he seems a bit nondescript altogether. The storyline of this movie of course is well-known and follows, if not exactly but pretty closely the story of the same name in the canon. There is just a whiff of EMPTY HOUSE in it, with Col. Moran using the famous air gun on Holmes. What's a bit odd is the inclusion of Sir Henry Baskerville (presumably because the story is set in Dartmoor) and what's even weirder is Baskerville's adult daughter who has a minor role in the story (but where's Beryl I wonder? Or maybe she isn't the mother....). Then of course we have the omnipresent and stereotypical Professor Moriarty (who was given the first name 'Robert' **ROFL**!!!) but I think he doesn't come across very convincingly. All in all watchable but average.

After all, Irene Adler is THE woman
15 July 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Now, I just watched this movie and while it is still one of the better SH movies I have watched, I still give it only 9 out of 10 because (SPOILERS! SPOILERS!) firstly Mycroft Holmes was so terribly slim and good-looking (in contrary to the canon) and secondly Cadogan West was actually the criminal and thirdly they even dared to combine the SCANDAL IN BOHEMIA and BRUCE-PARTINGTON!! OK OK, I won't be too harsh. It's a great movie and showed SH with a genuinely human side. Without so much as saying it he actually fell in love with Irene Adler who was a criminal (which is also not according to the canon, I might add), but who would Sherlock Holmes be more likely to fall in love with anyway? Watson was very cool IMHO. He was miles and miles and miles away from Bruce's Watson and that's saying a lot (I never liked Bruce as Watson but Rathbone is the KING)! One of the smaller things that struck me was the incredibly fake looking "Baker Street" sign towards the end of the film.

All in all it's a very cool SH movie (apart from Mycroft!). I simply loved Matt Frewer this time.

One of the best in the series
25 February 2006
Although to some people this might be blasphemous, I am not at all a fan of the way Bruce interprets the Watson character. This is simply because I believe this is not the way ACD intended to portray the character and it's simply ridiculous. Movies being another art form though, one must certainly make allowances for alternative interpretations. Rathbone, as usual, excels himself here and in my personal Holmes actor ranking he's first just before Jeremy Brett.

At the outset, I had the slight impression that the story is a bit of a rip-off of the HOUND but very soon one realises that the storyline goes into quite another direction. But since The Hound Of The Baskervilles is my very favourite Holmes story that didn't undo the story for me.

What made me wonder a bit was that although set in francophone Canada the only French allusions are the use of the address 'monsieur' and the name of the village... Everything else sounds quite English.

Still, the movie is greatly entertaining and the eerie marshland atmosphere with a hint at the supernatural is cleverly caught.
