The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (2022)
Not the worst, but not great either
Preface: I have never read a Tolkien book in my life, only seen the Peter Jackson movies.
Starting out with what's good about the show: It looks pretty nice, the environments fulfill their role very well, and does have it's own fantasy vibe, so you won't be thinking that 'this was shot in the local forest' like with a lot of material out there. The CGI is quite well done, albeit there's one or two shots that could have used more work, overall I'd say I have no real objections about it.
The music is better than average, albeit quite forgettable, sound design wise there's a few stock sounds that made me chuckle, because of their overuse nowadays.
Now to the bad: the writing and the acting. These go hand in hand, as they seem to be problematic. The show feels like it's supposed to be a period drama, portrayed in a theater or some ancient Greek amphitheater. I can't tell if the dialogue is supposed to be more Shakesperian or 'old prose' but the way people talk is just annoying. To an actor these prospects might have been interesting, but as the member of the audience it bores me to death. It's on the same level if not worse than the trade disputes or politics in the prequel star wars movies. It should have been done differently, albeit I think this could have been still fine if the acting was better.
The issue is, that the majority of the actors are all very wooden, both in line delivery and their facial mimicry. This is especially true to the main character (?) Galadriel's actress, who seems to be held at gunpoint to act like a mannequin with no emotions. Plot wise she should be driven through emotion (according to what we're being shown) yet her face never seems to want to get rid of her 'stoic' expression. Whenever there's supposed to be some sort of emotion showing on it, she's either stale or starts twitching. This makes her really uninteresting, and unintentionally funny, as she comes off as a robot, who does not understand human emotions. I laughed out loud when she teared up, as her expression was so unbelievably unfitting that it felt like it's a parody of itself. I can't tell if she's just a bad actress along with most of the other actors, or it's the fault of the direction (which is extremely by the book), but the acting is the biggest weak point of the show.
At the end of the day I don't think I would recommend this series, as thus far it is quite boring, with low quality acting, and with characters that just don't seem interesting enough to warrant their existence.
The Incredible Burt Wonderstone (2013)
Horrible
I was excited to watch this film, and what I got was a horrible let down.
Apart from being extremely clichéd, the films lead is horribly miscast as Steve Carrell, who's just plain boring and has absolutely no charm. He feels exactly like Bruce Willis from the latest Die Hard film, in the sense that he was there, to "be there". There was no effort made from him to act at all. I can see why Jim Carrey was chosen to play the antagonist, as he's the only thing that would make people want to watch this.
Whoever says that the fact that these two worlds, as in the "extreme" & "classical" collide, was a deliberate choice, has absolutely no clue what the movie was supposed to be about. It was supposed to be about the wonders of magic, yet it fell flat on it's face. It just tries way too hard to create jokes using the expectations of people, and going off in to the territory of "dark humor", trying to shock, and fails to deliver. It's as dry as an Adam Sandler film, and completely devoid of any emotion.
And no, this was not funny. It was just plain painful. Even if the sense of humor of people is something that's 100% subjective, I can't see why anyone would try to defend this movie as a comedy, unless they fall into the category of humans, who laugh for the sake of laughing.
Dragonball Evolution (2009)
Worst adaptation ever
This movie was utter crap. It had nearly no connection to the source material at all. The directing was bad, the acting was bad, and the effects.. pf were utterly cheese. 100 million US$ my *****. This movie looks like it was made by no more then 10 mills. Where did the money? Or there wasn't any money from the beginning, and you're just using this movie as a money laundry? Copying Uwe Boll too much? Whoever gave the changes in this movie a green-light was damn stupid. The whole thing's cliché, and relies again on the "Heroes Journey". I'd really wish Joseph Campbell would have never done any research on myths and archetypes, because it's his fault now, that every movie is the same nowadays.
This movie is really BAD. Even if you never knew anything about Dragonball (impossible) don't watch it, it'll still suck. Even the creator of the original manga (A.T.) said after watching this movie, that he's shocked at how bad it is.
Thank you Hollywood, you just bombed my childhood. Now I know how Hiroshima feels.
Delta (2008)
Crap
Hungary can't make any good movies. Fact. This is a great example of that.
First of all the term "plot" does not exist in this movie. It's seriously weak. Even tho a lot of people would argue with me on that. Sure, it's about a taboo, but that's about it. There are endless possibilities, which could have been really great, if used, but they nearly skipped everything. I think the whole movie is just an excuse to show pictures, which are the only decent things in this whole pile of awfulness.
The acting is just plain shitty. There aren't many lines, so you would think that the actors have great facial expressions or mimicking abilities, but no. In fact, 86% of the time, they suck. And that's when they don't say anything. If they say even a single word, you'll start tilting your head, saying: "That's damn unrealistic". But than again, this is partly the fault of the writing. There's also no emotion in most of the dialogs.
The editing is sometimes OK, but most of the time illogical and just worsens the whole picture. It could have given an emotional push, yet it seems the editing in here is all about putting cuts after each other.
Someone please explain it to me, why critics say this movie is a masterpiece. Calling this an "Art" isn't gonna make it better. Sorry Mundruczo, but you failed. Live with it. Even tho you probably won't care about my or any other guys opinion scarifying your "child".
