Remy & Arletta (2023)
an indie to watch
I thought this movie would be predictable but it actually was a raw and fresh slice-of-life story.
This film is very independent, but a well written script and wonderful lead performance by micaela wittman, followed by amy benedict and riley quinn scott carries the film and makes it feel special. The girls have so much chemistry. A relatable cast. Feels like something I haven't seen before, WARNING: some of the abuse scenes can be hard to watch. Reminds me of the movie Carrie when she gets locked in the closet. It gets very intense, but I admire how hard that must've been for the actors.
It's low budget and very indie like I mentioned, but I like that the focus was on the artistry not as much having a fancy camera or equipment. Highly recommend giving it a watch if you feel like crying or being reminded of your youth.
Clairevoyant (2021)
A joy
This movie is a joy to watch. The reviews that say it feels like awkward home footage made by a selfish airhead are....missing the point. Anyway, the writing is clever, the editing is fast-paced, the jokes are whip-smart. Hour and a half well spent.
Mikey's Extreme Romance (2011)
Underappreciated gem from the Australian indie comedy scene of the early 2000s/2010s
Look, man - This movie was a delight when I saw it at a film festival 10 years ago and I recently rewatched it to see if my memories didn't hold up but they held up, damn it!
This film is an unsung celebration of mockumentaries.
It's funny because, in terms of gender politics, the movie might've been ahead of its time. Maybe it was a time when Will Ferrel and Dane Cook dominated or people were sick of the office and needed more overt comedy. I don't know. Maybe I'm talking out of my ass.
But, the concept feels electric to me. There's an underlying subtextual joke that just really constantly tickles me and elevates all of the main character's antics.
Having this character, this man, unhealthily express his love through stalking this woman - filming her while she sleeps and being completely unaware of just how wrong what he's doing is - all the while slowly bringing us around to his idea of selfless love, it's really frickin' funny and, like, even a little thought-provoking.
He's sort of a modern day Cyrano De Bergerac and dude, I don't know what to tell you, it's just pretty great.
I'm giving this a 10 because it doesn't deserve a 5 and I don't think this movie EVER got a fair shake with its old distribution models. I followed it closely after I saw it at the festival, so, I'm a little personally invested and I'm glad that with streaming, it can have more of a fair chance moving forward.
The Number 23 (2007)
Hey, look at this amazing enigma...sort of...not really...I lied...sorry
Hey, look!
Jim Carrey's name is 9 letters but "W" is the 23rd letter in the alphabet! ...did that last sentence make any sense? no? Then it's just as good as the movie. I went to see this movie tonight and I tell ya, if you want to see Jim Carrey's best impression of Tom Cruise (I do not mean that condescendingly to Tom Cruise, but, honestly, Jim Carrey's performance seriously reminded me of him) ,then this movie is for you, but, for those of us who didn't like Batman and Robin and most certainly don't like bad movies, steer clear of this one. I think the one thing that really brings this movie down is it's huge amount of unconnected crap that WE are supposed to piece together.I half expected to see, at the end of the movie
"Dedicated to my teenage son's room after he hasn't cleaned it for a few weeks." Because, honestly, this thing is a mess.
There's flashbacks of flashbacks within flashbacks for Christ's sake!
