The Creator (2023)
7/10
Something Will Smith would've done in mid 2000s
2 October 2023
I want to like John David Washington so bad, but I think the verdict is out. He is just a mediocre actor. Not bad, but not great either. He's just good enough to carry the movie across the finish line, but brings nothing special to the performance. The creator has a pretty average story that we've seen before, just like equalizer 3 which came out a month before, but Denzel Washington, unlike John David, has the ability to single handily enhance a movie with his acting chops alone. I'm not trying to just compare him to his father, but making the point that JDW isn't ready to be a star yet and any more seasoned actor with a presence could've made this film 10x better (Michael B Jordan or even LaKeith Stanfield for example)

The only other big problem I had was that the movie had very little character development. We know nothing about the the main character besides his somewhat generic backstory. It would've helped the story big time if we got a sense of his personality and skill set.

To sum it up, this was a solid movie that had tons of potential, but fell a little short and John David either needs acting presence or find scrips that suit him better. I thought about it a little and it seems like he'd be way more convincing in comedic or semi comedic roles, but tries to take more serious roles because of who his father is. Just a thought.

Started off really good and fell apart
2 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
My biggest problem was them killing Ruth and how it was done. Shouldn't have killed her in the first place because she would be a great lead character for some kind of spin off, but to make it worse, they kill her off in the most anticlimactic way possible. Other than that the series just got slow and somewhat predictable after season 2.

The Batman (2022)

Tone of the movie just felt off honestly...
16 March 2022
I couldn't fully put my finger on it when I first saw the movie, but after the second viewing I had a better understanding of why this movie didn't quite hit home for me. To keep it short, the big problems include: the film trying to juggle too many villains at once, making the movie so dark and gritty to the point where it doesn't serve the character or story, and the bloated run time that should've been cut a little to make the movie feel more focused and faster paced. I still give it a 7 or 8 because I love the Batman character so much and this is only the first movie in what seems like a trilogy. Also, a lot of aspects like casting and visuals ultimately saved the movie.

A bunch of movies we've seen before slopped together
15 May 2021
I knew this movie was going to be bad because it's a Netflix movie and they rarely put out good original movies, also because everything about it (the title, the trailer, etc.) screamed cliche money grab. Ultimately, I decided to give the movie a chance and be open minded because of all the promising actors attached to it, but I was severely disappointed. Let's just say if you've seen any slasher and physiological thriller movie from the late 90s or 2000s (I'm sure we've all seen plenty) you're not missing anything with this movie, it's just a cheaper version of the better ones done before it.

Pile of crap disguised as a good movie.
2 March 2021
I don't think I'm alone when I say I felt nothing for the supposed protagonist and wanted her to die asap and was actually rooting for the supposed antagonist, which I have a feeling wasn't the writers and directors plan. Also the plot starts off kinda interesting but ends up being flat for a while and falling off completely. Plus the weird pro capitalism and anti Russia propaganda that pops up in a lot of movies nowadays just makes this movie even more distasteful.

Could've been great, but something's missing...
10 February 2021
There's a lot of great things going for this movie, but it ultimately just doesn't add up. I don't really put any blame on the actors or writers though, most of the problems seem to come from the director and editors. To keep from doing a deep dive and save time, let's just say the pace of the movie never really picks up much, there are points in the movie where the audience is confused about why certain things are happening, and you never feel attached to the characters in the way that the movie wants you be.

Also, I feel bad for Leto because he usually picks movies that look promising on a surface level and he seemingly tries really hard to be a good actor, but unfortunately it doesn't work out a lot of times. I really thought this was going to redeem some of his past failures, but it honestly didn't.

Another disappointment from DC
7 February 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This movie looks absolutely amazing and Margot Robbie and Ewan McGregor give high level performances as usual. Unfortunately, this movie ends up lacking the magic it should've had.

First off, there's too much narration which makes it hard to get into the story at times. There's so much narration that it just becomes lazy story telling on the writers and director's part.

Secondly, It seems to take a lot from other movies like kill bill, Scott pilgrim vs the world, and a lot of other films that don't come to mind at the moment. This could've been next level if the creators had the balls to be more original with the story.

Thirdly, There is unnecessary overt social commentary sloppily forced into the script from time to time.

Fourthly, The main antagonist doesn't feel threatening to the audience for one second. For example there's a scene where he forces a women in a club to strip that I guess was supposed to be menacing???

Lastly, this movie should've just been a solo Harley Quinn movie. The movie ended up trying to balance too much at once which made it feel not as focused as it could've been. The other girls just got glossed over because the studio wanted to sell more tickets.

I ultimately blame DC. Someone over there clearly doesn't belong in the film industry.

Underwhelming
4 February 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This movie had a lot of potential in my opinion. Impactful opening, nice cinematography, and some familiar actors. Unfortunately the movie ends up falling short. NO character development, cliche plot, underwhelming script, logic issues, and they really did the cliche "let's kill the only black character off first" thing.

I would advise anyone that comes across this movie to turn the other way, especially since there are others that are just like it but way better.

I really wanted to like this film
31 January 2021
When I first saw the trailer I thought, this movie could be a modern classic, but there's a lot of room for failure. In my opinion it unfortunately missed the mark, but has potential to maybe be a future cult classic. My problem was the inconsistent tone, misguided direction of the plot, hollow characters, and lack of violence since this was promoted as somewhat of a revenge horror/slasher. Although, I did like the aesthetic of the movie, some of the soundtrack, and the premise (I just wish it was executed better).

Just No...
15 December 2020
I wasn't even going to comment, but there are way too many comments that must be bought, rating this this garbage 8+/10. It was a generic action movie, with an overpowered female character, that was basically a superhero. A basic suburban housewife doesn't just patiently take 5 years off, after her family is murdered, and become a superhuman killing machine, that takes out a hundred career gangsters alone. There are a countless amount of illogical and cliche moments, but to keep it short I'll stop here and just say, don't watch this movie. People rating it a 6 are being kind, and anything over that is delusional.

Poorly thought out ending ruins potentially great film
5 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Why go through the trouble of driving the dad/killer out to the woods and dragging his body deeper into the woods to kill him for a staged suicide when you could've just called the cops in the first place or drove the killer to the cops??? There is no legit reason to protect his memory and reputation which is what I guess the son was trying to do by just killing him off. Also are we supposed to believe a couple of minor really got away with all that without being seen or questioned or anything??? There plans were laughably silly, I was letting it go until the cover up part at the end, but that finally just broke me.

Also what about the lady from the grocery store? I thought she was dead but according to what the girl says at the end she's not. The girl say she didn't see the killers face so she can't ID him, but that doesn't stop her from coming forward with all the sh*t she heard and did see, she wasn't deaf!!! Plus if they were trying to cover up the situation how did they let the woman go or get her to help without her seeing them in the first place?

This ending was just really sloppy and messed up a movie that I was actually really enjoying. I just don't buy that innocent teenagers decided to be cold blooded murders when they had other options. Plus they don't explain what happened to the victim at the end well at all. Everything besides the disappointing ending was actually really good. Could've been a 7 or 8/10.

The Daughter Ruins It...
3 December 2020
This movie has a few big problems that bring it down in my opinion.

My biggest problem was unnecessarily making the little girl a main character in this somewhat gritty rated r film as if this is a family Disney movie, she was just so misplaced. The time spent on her could've been used to develop the lead characters relationship more.

The second biggest problem was the lazy and flat comedy, they definitely needed better writers. The comedy often didn't fit in this movie at all which gives the film an overall confusing tone. Also, Ryan Gosling doesn't do bad but this type of role is way more up Ryan Reynolds alley and casting him instead would've likely enhanced the movie.

The third and final problem that stopped this movie from being what it could've been is the confusing plot. I wasn't quite sure how certain things came together or what anyone's motivation was in many parts of the movie.

Overall, this movie wasn't terrible but it's nothing special at all. My guess is that Warner bros. is to blame for most of these issues.

Not the great film it could've been
19 October 2020
What keeps this movie from being great in my opinion is the organization of how the story is told. It does that thing where a movie will start in the middle of a story and reveal the beginning of the story somewhere near the end of the movie. In this movie telling the story in this order is completely unnecessary and makes the film confusing at times. I also would've like to see a little more of yahya abdul mateen II and the black panthers. Other than that this movie wasn't bad at all, but it could've been next level, especially considering the times we're in.

Mediocre. Also Vince Vaughn???
29 September 2020
Only positive thing I can say about this movie is that the cgi was pretty good for the time and that's about it. Jeff Goldblum is a terrible leading man in this movie, nothing about him is captivating or relatable and he just feels out of place. Also he has a random African American daughter that serves no purpose in the story and it isn't even explained how he ended up with a black daughter that clearly isn't mixed. Btw he is a jerk to her for most of the film and treats her more like a pet than a daughter, which as a black person, I found a little offensive. The only black character is a child with no substance thats always getting yelled at. In 1997 this movie probably was a little more bearable, but since it's release thousands of movies just like this have been made, therefore the plot just felt extremely recycled and nearly put me to sleep. Also Vince Vaughn???????

Waste of talented actors...
23 September 2020
Where do I begin? There's extremely unnecessary narration through out the film that reminds you of a cliche 90's or early 2000's movie, it just doesn't fit at all. The direction of the movie is confusing for the first hour and 20 minutes, it's like the director was either trying too hard or not confident in what he wanted to do. All the waisted time in the beginning could've been used to develop certain characters but it wasn't so certain events felt rushed/forced and the main characters felt hollow. Also the story ultimately could've done without the excessive religious stuff, it ended up doing nothing for the plot. This film had a lot of potential because of the great cast but fell extremely short imo.

Potential Cult Classic?
18 June 2020
I'm giving this film a 6/10 because I really enjoyed the aesthetic. I can see this becoming a cult classic that people get stoned and watch because it has this dream-like, gloomy, realistic atmosphere and an unintentionally overt early/mid 2000's vibe that is so apparent that it feels intentional.

I can see how people that watched this movie around the time it came out think it's complete trash though. It just feels too empty. The plot had so much potential but was all over the place and ended up going nowhere. If you're into artsy a24 type movies, this is for you. If you want a well rounded movie with some action then stay away.

Come on...???
27 May 2020
So this movie is pretty much bad on every level, don't watch it. Besides a few laughs, I got nothing from it. It could've been saved somewhat if they didn't completely exclude MJW from a majority of the movie (50% of the reason people decided to give this a chance in the first place) and if the main character/actor they chose to go with was more likable, talented, and known. Plus MJW was basically just playing Black Dynamite so this is just horrible.

Missed the Mark... completely
20 May 2020
My problem with this film is there is no character progression and barely any story development. Every character stayed the exact same from start to finish. Willem Dafoe is a nice guy that never gets the balls to do anything, but I actually don't mind this for his role as much. The kids stay annoying and one dimensional throughout the entire film, and the mom is just a bipolar b*tch the entire movie, we don't find out anything about her past to explain why she is this way or to make us sympathetic toward her.

My second issue is the story kinda goes nowhere. This is one of those films where you feel like you were robbed of your time at the end. There are quite a few moments where you feel like the story is going somewhere intriguing but it just doesn't. Then when we finally get to the final act we are just left with a vague, lazy ending that leaves the fate of the main characters up to interpretation.

People that overhype this movie definitely have their head up their a$$ or are just followers that get their opinions from other reviewers. This movie is not as deep as people act like it is. 6/10 AT BEST if I'm being generous.

Security Cameras...???
3 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
My big problem was with the logic of this film. There are two scenes in a restaurant and hospital that would've proved the main characters innocence only if they had security cameras (which they 100% would've in 2020). Another illogical part of this movie was the ending. It just felt rushed and not creative at all, it actually was so bad and cliche it got cringey imo. The last thing that bothered me was that the relationship between the family that the protagonist was staying with was never explained. I didn't need a deep explanation because that's not what the movie was about but if you're going to put it in our face's explain a little more. Like why were the cop and attorney separated? Why doesn't their daughter live with her mom? Why would the attorney let her sister stay under the same roof as her ex husband and not with her? Why does the attorney never really interact with her daughter? If you can look past some minor holes then you should still check it out. This movie did more things right than bad in my opinion.

A lot of potential but comes up short
28 January 2020
So this is not the best movie out there by any means. A LOT of things need to be explained and a lot of things just don't make any sense. It has an interesting concept, characters, and the acting wasn't bad but that's about it. If this film came out today I would give it a 4 or 5/10 but since this is a 70's film that seemed to have a modest budget I'm cutting it some slack. The people that are giving it anything under a 5 are being too harsh and anyone giving it anything over a 7 are delusional. It's just an average Sci-Fi movie that keeps you pretty entertained, nothing else.

Lack of substance is what killed this movie.
11 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The only thing that saves this movie from being a complete waste of time in my opinion is that it keeps you genuinely interested with intriguing scenes for a majority of the time and the solid performances from the actors, even though they didn't have much to work with. What ultimately kills it though is the lack of substance behind the writing and directing. My first big problem was the characters silly actions (mainly the teenage boy). He doesn't act his age whatsoever, he comes across more like a 7 y/o, not 17. He makes thoughtless action after thoughtless action to the point where I was questioning if he was mentally handicapped. The other characters made weird, illogical choices from time to time but for the most part they were forgivable, except in a couple of scenes where the main female character had multiple opportunities to save her husband by shooting a man (she barely knows) that was about to kill him, but instead she decides to hesitate for no good reason.

My second and last huge problem with this movie is that it is a little too vague. We are told absolutely nothing throughout the entire film about what "Comes at Night", the disease people catch, how many people are estimated to still be alive, and when this all started. We basically end the movie where we begin, there is no message or complete story told. Again it's not the worst movie ever if you're watching it for free because it it has a lot of potential in a few areas but it is nothing worthy of paying to see. At the end of the day it kept me interested the entire duration and that's more than I can say for a lot of movies, so if you're on Netflix, demand, or a free movie sight and you want to see a dark thriller (this is not a horror) and kill some time with friends/family but also want to stay entertained and yell at the tv a little, throw this on. If you want to see a serious movie that is actually good or scary with a fulfilling ending, stay far away from this movie.

Waisted about two hours of my life
3 May 2019
I don't care what anyone says, this movie is extremely overhyped. Personally, it didn't even look interesting on a surface level, but I decided to watch it anyway because of the rave reviews. Now after watching this I have to ask, what kind of drugs are people on to find this borefest interesting? By the end of the movie I got no fulfillment at all, I didn't walk away with a message or even entertained whatsoever. There is just no progression in the film. You start in the beginning, in the middle of the movie you still feel like you're in the beginning, and in the last ten minutes you feel like you're going somewhere, but you literally end up in the beginning. Maybe that's what the director was going for because by the end of the movie I felt like I had the same condition as the main character, but there's something called trying to be too deep, which is what is going on here. I put so much faith in Christopher Nolan because of the Dark Knight trilogy but I don't know what he was thinking with this one.

Definitely the Best Predator Movie!!!
1 December 2018
The 1987 predator movie deserves its respect for laying the foundation and breaking ground at the time it was released, but if you compare This movie and the 1987 classic, this movie is clearly the superior film. There were some minor holes and corny scenes in the movie, but nothing that ruined the film. I also had reservations about adrien brody playing the lead action star considering he doesn't look the part and was in the shadow of the iconic Arnold Schwarzenegger, but I must say that he did a great job. Everything came full circle in this movie and it added a depth to the Predator story that other films failed to do. This is definitely a movie worth checking out.

Extremely cheesy...
10 November 2018
The first 20 minutes were good but the movie got cheesy very fast with the poor writing and cliche horror movie themes. Now of days these movies are more along the line of A Nightmare on Elm Street or even Van Helsing. They just overdue it with the supernatural/fantasy aspect and neglect a good storyline. At this point they are just doing these movie for money. I won't pay to see another insidious, Annabelle, or conjuring movie again.

Not THAT bad...
10 October 2018
This type of movie has been done thousands of times, you know the found footage/young adult horror slasher flick, but in my opinion "Exist" was executed pretty well. No it's not the best movie ever but for what it was it exceeded my expectations. I respect the fact that they decided to go with a Sasquatch, which in my opinion is underrated in the horror movie world, opposed to the typical horror movie antagonist like ghost, zombies, and nowadays killer clowns. They also did a pretty nice job with the sasqutch's looks besides the hair being a little too long. At the end of the day of course there was a cliche horror/slasher movie plot but this movie at least did the bare minimum of what it was supposed to do which is be scary and keep you interested.
