Joker (2019)
I don't understand the hype
I guess I was expecting something more, the hype was huge, sadly I felt this movie left me wondering why?? The acting was adequate, action non existent, dialogue superficial and Phoenix a sad reproduction of Ledgers benchmark. Just my opinion, however my lady watched it with me and seemed befuddled by the absolute lack of anything noteworthy. As an origin story, it was disappointing, as an artistic endeavor to exploit comic logic in an ethereal manner, it was tragically successful. Of the 20 or so people I have discussed this movie with, all but one, an arts student in his eighth year of studies, felt much the same. Sadly, this seems to be the way of the Hollywood studios, reheat old stew, add curry powder and call it original.
Another Life (2019)
Seriously???
What a woeful waste of budget and opportunity all just to push the liberal agenda of gender fluidity and the abilities of women to do the hard jobs. All this show does is reflect the incapacity for females in a command role to do anything other than apologise for every decision and constantly make mistakes based on emotion. I have never seen a cast of characters so self absorbed or egocentric. If this reflects the leftist utopian view, then our species is doomed. All in all, a rather ludicrous synopsis played into obscurity by losing the plot and replacing it with a ridiculous agenda to impress upon us all that blind ego driven stupidity is today's answer to good character structure and plot. I wouldnt recommend this show to anyone with a triple digit IQ.
Astraea (2015)
A missed gem in a field of rocks.
I stumbled across this film by sheer chance, it proved to be most fortuitous. I am a prepper, a survivalist, and hold little hope in humanity not meeting the reaper head on. This movie should give many a moment of pause to consider such an event, as it is portrayed in this film. No big budget distractions, no blood, guts and gory glory, just a damn fine cast and crew bringing a tragedy to life with grace and professional methodology. I wont give anything away, suffice to say, if you want an honest realisation of perhaps the most probable end to life as we know it, this gem of a movie delivers. Beautifully filmed and artfully directed, this has become a film that I will be only to happy to recommend to my friends and family. The cast is very consistent and convincing, the cinematography is outstanding and the story disturbingly viable. If you want a sneak peek at our probable demise, this is a movie showing humanity ending with a whimper, not a bang.
Occupation (2018)
Who needs a massive budget to show how it's done, right.
I have been sadly disappointed by what has been on offer lately, a bit of an action addict and a dedicated sci-fi fan, most of the latest releases from Hollywood have, to be blunt, sucked balls or gone for cheap laughs, this has been rectified by one seriously impressive Indy movie, Occupation, and the pride in knowing it was filmed just down the road from me is very strong to say the least. I have no criticisms, no disappointments, no flat bits when remembering what I have just seen. On a scale of one to ten, I have no hesitation giving this a ten out of ten. Seeing Australia serve up how an action sci-fi movie should be done is quite remarkable, considering the budget and the cast. While there were plenty of familiar faces, none would be considered Hollywood A Lister's, I feel this movie will rectify that very quickly. I will be purchasing a copy asap, and waiting eagerly for the sequel, which, if this is anything to go by, will be a remarkable piece of sci-fi cinematic history.
Kudos to the cast and crew, you have done Oz proud and from one avid sci-fi and action fan, a very genuine "you bloody ripper."
If you, like me, have been feeling a bit let down by the offerings of late, I have no qualms recommending you invest the money and time to sit back and emerge yourself in this action sci-fi masterpiece.
