Hawaii Five-0: Alaheo Pau'ole (Gone Forever) (2011)
Haole? 'a'ole!
Although I love watching the new H50, today I will rant about a few things re; the current episode. Why not have at least one token local kid in among the three? You can tell this is scripted in el lay. While the three kids were doing this, they had one of them (or two) recite the tired inane marketing commercial slogan "Let's do this" twice. Also they talk like mainlanders. No one cares, but there is a chasm size difference in lingo here as opposed to the conusa. Ugh! Sizemore is more appropriate for a New york cop show. He would not last two weeks here in Hawai'i with his behavior. He does not know anything regarding the Kapu hui. He tries to strong arm and threaten Kawika. huh! "She works at the Paradise Cove luau" "How do you know?!" Duh. THIS is why the use of mainland and haole cops, detectives, mayors, governors etc. does not work in H50 and of course why it would not happen in real life. Locals only! They will spend half their time explaining each and every minor thing to the FOBs. ANY kama'aina recognizes the lu'au shot. Costume, background... It serves no purpose but to only aggravate viewers when you have this unprofessional unrealistic fish out of water scenario. No one cares, but there is a chasm size difference in the way we do things here as opposed to the conusa.
The Ninth Gate (1999)
Great underrated intelligent thriller
As with a previous reviewer, I also have seen this film many times and as before, get something out of it upon each successive viewing. Love Depp and the lead woman. Beautiful. I love old books and this flick is right up my alley as a top twenty keeper. I was chagrined to see everyone smoking and drinking over the supposed priceless tomes. There must have been a reason for it and I feel a bit dim for not knowing why Polanski would have the book restorer in Spain drop ashes on the cover and then... rub it into the leather! Anyway that is irrelevant. Love Depp's reaction to LCF. Love the general subject and the atmospheric locales used, as I have worked in a few large estates such as depicted as well as having been involved in the book industry and the restoration of vintage books. Langella does a great job as do all others in the cast. I feel somewhat sorry for the numerous critics who panned the film upon release. It is an underrated intelligent film and should be on the must see list of every thinking adult.
