Deja Vu (2006)
Great movie, probably second or third best this year
Tony Scott and Denzel do it again. If you did not like Man on Fire's cinematography, not much has changed. I loved it. He is a great director and a great editor. Many of the shots made my jaw drop and eyes widen. They were incredible.
The plot was perfect. Everything that doesn't make sense in the beginning is fully explained later. It is incredible and makes you smile when you realize that you are seeing what happened.
Now, the biggest complaint is that it is not physically possible. But this is a movie. I mean, it is OK for ten-story apes to exist, but once something scientific doesn't fully seem possible, the movie gets a D. Trust me on this, this movie is great. I am very very glad I went to see it.
Do not miss it.
Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan (2006)
Probably one of the worst movie I have ever seen
It made me physically sick to think about why someone would make such a horrible movie.
I know a lot of you like it. But if you look at it from any single point of view, it is a terrible movie. I had to leave the theater and went to see Catch a Fire.
If you haven't seen it, do not. All it does is make fun of Jews. Only mentally retarded people will laugh at it.
In all honesty, there were two funny parts. But I only laughed for a few seconds for one, and the other was just a smile.
Go watch a good comedy like Snatch or Shuan of the Dead.
Snakes on a Plane (2006)
This is probably the worst movie ever made
But that is not to say that it is a horrible experience. I laughed harder than I did at Lady in the Water.
If you see this alone, it is the worst movie ever made.
If you see this with about a dozen friends, its some-what decent, just for the laughs.
The reason I say it is bad is because everything that makes a movie good is lacking in this movie. The Acting is horrible. Even Samuel overacts everything. The plot is retarded, and there are many holes in it. There are no cool directing traits. Not one cool shot. There is no drama, even though there tries to be. There is no character development. It has the worst ending in any movie, ever.
Yes, the movie is funny, but it tries to be serious. Even the 'sad' parts were stupid.
This movie is nothing but laughing because of how horrendously stupid it is. Somehow they snuck an anaconda into a plane. This will anger any true fan of good film.
But if you want to get a few cheap laughs, sneak into this movie. Do not even think of paying.
The Lion King (1994)
How is this not on the top 250?
I just watched the Lion King for the 30-something time. It's been a few years, and I have gotten way more into film since the last viewing. Therefore, I noticed how amazing this movie is.
The Lion King is the basic story of MacBeth (with a few differences, but same basic plot line)... A greedy man kills the king to take power. The deceased King's son seeks revenge after years of living on the lam.
The cinematic aspects of the film amaze me. The intro is among the greatest in any movie, animated or live action. The death scene nearly made me cry, and I knew what was going to happen, and I am an 18 year old male. And the ending, with the rain and all the animals and the song... I will not even try to recreate the experience with words... you have to see it.
In my opinion, no one should dislike this movie... it is a classic. It has probably the best music of any Disney move, save Fantasia. It is a little childish at times, but it is always interesting and never fails to keep your attention.
Unless you hate animation with a passion, you will at least like this movie. A movie every movie fan should not just see, but own.
10/10
United 93 (2006)
This movie could be about 10 times better
OK OK, I saw this movie in the theater a while ago and I just got around to spreading my opinions.
I'd probably give this a 3/10
There are many reasons that this movie was lackluster at best.
1. It didn't tell any backgrounds of the people that died. If this was dedicated to the people who died on the flight, then it should have told about them. I know the director was trying to get the message across that these people were just random, every day people, but I already know that. What I want to know is who these people were. I want to know why they didn't deserve their fate. I wanted to cry at the end, but tears never came.
2. The movie was not done well. They had a pretty large budget for this movie, but used small amounts of it... They pretty much needed one set: The Plane. Aside from the end, there were no cool shots (the way it ends was cool)
3. But the ending could have been better. I know it is clichéd, but if they could have fit a few news reports in, it would have made it more moving I think.
4. The crowd I saw it with sucked... Everyone started cheering when they slit the terrorist's throat. If you clapped when this happened, you are probably going to hell. It is still a person.
5. It is too soon to make money off the tragedy. That is just lame... they should have let people in for free or like give 100% of the money made to charities or something. That's as bad as Mel capitalizing off of Christ in The Passion.
6. Everyone knew what was going to happen, and it is meaningless to see. The director doesn't do anything different or really cool... and since the plot is already given, it is like watching a special news report, but a little more interesting.
If you haven't seen it, I'd suggest just downloading it off bit torrent to not pay corporations to make a meaningless film to make money off a tragedy.
I pray to god that WTC is better.
Lady in the Water (2006)
horrible
Hey, I just saw the movie titled in the subject, here is my review.
The SIxth Sense marked the debut of M. Night's fame and popularity. The atmosphere and vibe that he created, along with a clever plot and a twist ending made movie-goers everywhere realize the importance of Shyamalan. He, to some extent, created a cult following.
Now, four movies later, many of his fans are wondering when he will reveal a movie as amazing as The Sixth Sense. With the OK-at-best movie Unbreakable, people were wondering if he was just a one-hit-wonder director. Then, with Signs, there was some hope that he would make a comeback.
But, then he released The Village. After he lost thousands of fans due to that horrendous movie, he attempts at making another good movie. He most certainly fails.
The movie places a stuttering man who lost his entire family in an Apartment complex. He, as the super, notices someone swimming late at night. This is the Lady from the title.
You see, M. Night created an entire "Bed Time Story" about how land people used to coexist with the people of the "Blue World" (the ocean). These people speak English. But Land people got greedy and started fighting. But the Blue World people stayed pure, like water, as the Super points out.
To help out the greedy people, huge birds that no land person has ever seen flies them to the land, and they must confront a "Chosen One" (no really, that is how the put it) and show them the way. The way the chosen one is directed will end up helping the land people as a whole.
The Chosen One is, of course, M. Night himself. He can write, direct, produce and now act. He must be the chosen one.
Anyways, there are wolves that aren't wolves, but are Scants or something. Their fur is grass and they are green. So that is why no person has seen them. These Scants attack people from the Blue World, but not the land. But there are rules.
The night that the Snarf (lady of the blue world, The main Lady) returns to the blue world, the cannot attack them. If they do, these monkeys that aren't monkeys will kill them. There are three. And they are also made out of grass.
But normal Scants wont attack Snarfs unless they are Rogue Scants. And those usually wont do it either, unless the Snarf is a Madame Snarf. And she is.
So now the protagonist, Cleveland must find people to help him.
You see, there are some normal people that help the Snarfs. Among the people are the Healer, the Guardian, the Guild and the Interpreter. These people are the only people who can see the Snarf leave. No one else can... or else it wont work or something.
And the moral is that no one knows who they are. I'm serious.
Anyways, the main bulk of the movie is Cleveland looking for people who can help, and being wrong a lot. And then he keeps stuttering. And it is annoying.
This is definitely M. Night's worst directed movie. Many of the shots are out of focus and hurt your eyes. And then there were the random shots, like when it showed the sign of The Cove while people were dying. And there were a lot of unnecessary close ups.
The writing is by far the worst in any movie. The Interpreter figures out what to do by looking at cereal boxes. I am not kidding. It hurt me inside when it happened.
The acting was decent by many, but some of the people should not be actors. M. Night was pretty good, but his lines were kept at a minimum.
Despite the absurdity of the Bed Time Story, every single person Cleveland told it to believed it immediately. And that is about 15 people. Just imagine someone telling you that a human that looks like everyone else... that doesn't even have gills, lives in the water. Nope, not happening.
The only good thing I could find was the music... and only the last song. A few of the other songs were out of place and unnecessary. But the song during the climax was very well composed.
M. Night should, in my opinion, stop directing and maybe pick up a different hobby. Like not directing. Or writing.
Overview: This movie is in my top 5 worst movies I have ever seen. I laughed at how absurd the story was, but never laughed at the so-called 'funny parts.' Do not see this movie unless you like pain.
Final grade: 3/1000
The Matrix Revolutions (2003)
Wow, the W. Brothers destroyed a good thing
Everyone can agree that the Matrix was amazing, not only because of the sweet CGI effects, but because of its philosophical plot.
Honestly, when I saw the first one, I loved it. But what they did with he plot ruined the expirence.
The main plot is about the agents taking over the Matrix, taking control. Honestly, it has been a while since I have seen this, so bare with me if I miss out on some of it.
Anyways, what they did wrong was create an idea of a coup de tat in a world that has not been explained nearly enough. Instead of answering questions, they created new ones.
Then there is the whole machines vs. humans, which is just cheesy. The machines easily out numbered the humans.
Then finally, there is the whole new understanding of 'the one.' Honestly, I could care less why he existed. Seems to be an anomaly (wow, spelling) in the Matrix. But him being a mistake doesn't explain why the agents are trying to take over. And they say that Neo must die in order to save everybody (cuz there were more than one 'one'). All of that is lame, I'm sorry.
And the whole fight in the absent street in the rain was cool, but really not ground breaking.
OK, I didn't want a huge war, I didn't want an attempt on a coup de tat, I didn't want to find out why he is the one.
I'd rather them have to destroy the matrix by pulling a plug or something.
Please, if you have not seen any of the Matrix movies... watch the first one only. You will be happy. Seeing the sequels makes the first way worse.
Why We Fight (2005)
The Best Documentary I have EVER SEEN
I saw this on BBC when it first aired (I recorded it), and watched it 15 times in the first month of recording it.
There is nothing wrong about this documentary. Nothing I have heard it say is wrong or stretched to prove a point.
This is not one of Michael Moore's "this movie is only meant to make America look bad" movies, this movies is meant to tell the truth. It does not direct any bad towards Republicans, Democrats or an individual president.
Actually, it Idolizes Eisenhower, who was, in fact, a member of the Republican party.
This movie some how talks about every single aspect of the American military system in about 1:40.
It proves how the Iraqi War had nothing to do with 9/11, and even follows a man who lost his son on 9/11 (how he jumped to believe that Iraq was responsible because of his need for revenge, etc.). It talks about the profits that are dealt with war (they are astonishing), it covers every major war from WWII to Iraqi War (especially Vietnam and Iraq). It talks about Halliburton.
And the last line of the movie very well sums up the question, Why We Fight.
If you are closed minded or seriously into the military and wont accept that America has lied to you, do not watch this.
If you want to find out what really drives the Milirary-Industrial complex, watch this immediately.
If you don't want to buy it, the original BBC movie can be found at video.google.com (it is there, just look around)
Arlington Road (1999)
Wow, this came out of nowhere
Just start watching this movie... I dare you... see if you can watch the first five minutes and stop it. You can't. The 'different' opening leads into what I thought would be a weird horror movie. Wrong should have been my middle name.
What happens in the opening is only so Jeff will meet a shady neighbor, who Jeff finds weird things about.
What I loved about this movie is that it is more than just entertaining... it proves a point about terrorism and relief dealt with terrorist acts.
And the ending just made the movie even more amazing. If you see this, and are disappointed, you are officially stupid.
There you go.
Lucky Number Slevin (2006)
Not The Usual Suspects good, but good
This movie is a movie all about the ending. When I was watching it through, I was weirded out by the lame dialogue. Instead of just talking, they would dance around what they had to say and then about 50 seconds later, they would say it.
The acting was great, but Lucy Liu or whoever was annoying. She never shut up.
The directing was great, it always somewhat confused you, but wouldn't make you have to replay the scene in your head to understand it. Unless, of course, you are stupid or the president.
The music was OK, nothing that would top John Williams, but it fit.
The plot was sweet, but like i said before, the dialogue had some holes that needed to be filled in.
But in the end, you just are forced into liking the movie. The right amount of people die, and the entire story of the past and present fit together like clockwork.
So I'd say that it is probably the best movie this year so far, and to definitely see it.
The Brothers Grimm (2005)
Ummm, is this a comedy?
If you wanted to see the next Lord of the Rings, you just got raped in the butt, cuz this is uncomparable to it. My friends and I went to see this the first day it came out because the trailers made it look good. They were very misleading. This movie is bad. Almost vomit- enducing.
Here is an example of what happens: A girl is pulling up a bucket from the well. A crow comes up and flaps its wings and all this mud flys onto the girls face. She wipes it off, but her eyes were gone. The mud consumed them. Now the mud ends up consuming her entire body, and then turns into the ginger bread man. Now he eats his arm and jumps back into the well.
I felt like hurting who ever's idea that was. Badly. After seeing that (and there are other parts that are that bad as well), my friends and I fell out of our seats laughing. Brett started crying.
So if you must see this, I suggest you take it with a grain of salt and get a little drunk.
