Avatar: The Way of Water (2022)
it's worth the time and money
I watched it in IMAX 3D, and that's the only way I would watch this movie and you should too. Otherwise, you'd be disappointed. As many pointed out, the story is not really much. A big plot hole is that the water people suddenly disappeared in the middle of a war and abandoned their daughter.
One big reason I want to watch this movie is that I love ocean and aquarium. It's $40 to visit Georgia aquarium and it took me just one hour to finish all. So for about $23 for the visually stunning movie depicts all those magical creatures in the ocean, this is worth every single penny. It's 3 hours long but I totally enjoyed and would recommend it to everyone, but again, IMAX, 3D.
Dexter: New Blood: Sins of the Father (2022)
The write continued mistakes in the first Dexter
Many have pointed out the inconsistencies in the finale: Harrison, after finally "found" himself through hell with his father, all of a sudden lost it because of a coach he met a month ago; Angela, the girlfriend cop, became stone-cold and single-minded for no particular reason; Dexter, the one who's way smarter than all of us, had no clue what he was doing.
Why both of the finales ended up in the same mess? One main reason is that the writer struggles to write Dexter by following a cliché: killers should be punished by the rules in society. Dexter is NOT a traditional character and should never have been punished by the rules made by commoners in the society. He is NOT us. The writer should have let him follow his inner darkness and let it end naturally without putting a moral judgement on it. In that sense, Dexter needs not to die or drag everyone down (like Debbie with him). He either needs to escape his fate or die in an explosive way that he chooses, like Walter White. The writers repeated the same mistakes.
Braqueurs (2021)
entertaining and watchable
Good beginning but like some have already pointed out: many holes in the plot. The character Liana basically caused all the mayhem simply because she is stupid, careless, criminal, and spoiled. In face of danger, her attitude is "I will be ME". While others are all like, "well, young people make mistakes". But hey, those mistakes killed the entire family. If I were the uncle, I would have just killed her immediately and saved his own family.
The Chair (2021)
As a department chair of Foreign Languages, I'd it's an okay show
Interesting to watch but many non-realistic issues: Bill would have been fired long time ago based on his behavior and tenure cannot save him in a small private college. The three old timers would have been "asked" to retire long ago and low-enrolled classes would have been canceled before the term starts so the students can register for other classes on time. Take Joan (professor in the basement) for example, if in real life she tracks down a student who gave her nasty reviews and yells at him in public, the student (and his angry parents) would have filed a complaint against her and HR would have involved immediately before a disciplinary action was taken. Professors are walking on thin ice these days, as portrayed in Bill's case.
Students and their parents are much more demanding now days, especially in tuition-driven small private colleges. This department would have ceased to exist 5 years ago if it functions as presented, and definitely would not make through COVID time.
Land of the Lost (2009)
Very fun movie
This movie is kind of like "dumb and dumber". It's ridiculous, unbelievable, dioic, stupid, and FUN! If you want something meaningful, deep, or insightful, this is not for you. If you want some Saturday night fun, a family time-together, this is your movie.
Homeland: In Full Flight (2020)
she could have sent saul the recording
It's not a big file. Or she can even use the phone to let saul hear it and record it on his phone. But again, then there will be no more episodes. This is like the cliche 007 movie, when the bad guy can simply kill Bond, but no, they tie him on a lousy thing and gave him a month to escape.
Chinese Burn (2017)
Self hatred
Let me summarize what this show, created by three women from HongKong and Taiwan, is about. Don't be offended as I am Chinese.
1. Chinese women are prostitutes who love white males.
2. Chinese men are ugly and "small".
3. Chinese people eat dogs and rats.
Of course, if you ask the producers and actresses, they'd say "we are not Chinese" and they HATE Chinese and love trump. But let me tell you, no one gives a rat behind.
Crime Scene: The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel (2021)
Not really much to report here
I agree with many of the comments that it focused on the wrong group. the Youtubers. But the truth is that, Elisa was a poor girl who suffered mental sickness, which led to her climbing into the water tank. If there is not much to it, there is not much that you can do about building up the story. The story could have been told in one hour.
Bling Empire (2021)
It's a really "Fake" show
As a Chinese American, I have hopes for the show. In the first episode, the rich girl claims her husband is the 24th generation of Song Dynasty. Really? ! You think no one would notice such a stupid claim in the U.S.? I know they are super rich, but it seems like they tried very hard to "dehumanize" themselves so they appear "abnormal" in a very bad way. For example, it seems that everyone in the show tried hard to look "ugly". What's wrong with rich and normal?
Close (2019)
A good movie to watch
Well the story is nothing new: a tough guy/girl retired from the army works as a bodyguard for a spoiled rich kid. They hate each other at the beginning and love each other at the end, after some soul-searching or emotional development.
The actions are good to watch but still the story has quite a few holes: 1. they basically stay in the same place the whole movie. 2 a few phone calls can easily solve the problems between the daughter the Rima, the mother-in-law. 3. The spoiled daughter became Rambo at least twice and took down top trained soldiers. 4. The last scene in the house is basically unbelievable.
Messiah (2020)
a wonderful watch
A great show. I have no interest in god or bible, but I truly enjoyed everything. I just watched it again since there is no season 2. Too bad!
The Wrong Missy (2020)
not really funny, just ridiculous
If you have seen "Shallow Hall", you will have some basic ideas. The plots and jokes in this one are just ridiculous, not funny. An exaggeratedly crazy person somehow can do a lot of magical things. And at the end, she is not all of a sudden normal.
Extraction (2020)
action-packed fun
If you love action movies and military-themed movies, this is for you. The plot is quite easy and common, it's basically a mission to retrieve something or someone. The hero got help from friends and killed enemies before completing the mission. Not a single moment is boring.
The Foreigner (2017)
One of Jackie Chan's best in recent years
Good story, solid acting. Jackie Chan is really serious in this movie. The Kung Fu is no longer a major component but a good tool in pushing the development of the story. It has a bit of Rambo and Bourn's Identity in it too.
American Factory (2019)
Shed light on the current sino-American tension and trade war
I like it because it simply tells a story as it is, no political agenda and no judgement. As someone who came from China and witnessed the falling of manufacturing in the north (lived in PA for 14 years before moving to the south), I have what's going on is sad but inevitable. It seems to me that once upon a time, the U.S. was China depicted in the movie. Trump wants the old days back but it's simply not possible.
Triple Threat (2019)
could have been great
I am not expecting much when seeing the cast. I mean, it cannot be too wrong with all of those great martial artists in it. But it went a bit too far for me. One example. A small Asian guy's (I am Chinese, so no offense) wife was killed by a big black dude. All he wanted was revenge and he finally stood up in front of the big black dude, with a machine gun!!! What would we do if we were in his shoes? Shoot the bad guy and kick his dead body!! BUT, the small Asian guy threw away the machine gun and challenged him to a fist fight!!!!! of course he lost miserably. Now you decide if you want to watch it or not.
Mile 22 (2018)
A very solid action-packed movie
Which will keep you on edge until the very last minute! I am not sure what happened to the reviews. Maybe they simply don't like action movie. This is not one of the Holly-wood style movie that at the end, heroes smashed bad guys.
Goliath (2016)
Can someone explain some of the important plot holes?
They are fighting against a big law firm and more powerful weapons company. Sometimes the big guys are so powerful that they can put the lawyer in jail and KILLED his client in front of the court house in bright daylight. But other times they are too afraid to touch him and so they are being dragged by him in court. Again, they could have easily just killed him, put him in jail, revoked his licence, threatened his family. But no, the bad guys all of a sudden wanted to argue in court.
The Night Comes for Us (2018)
Ultra violent with okay action and story
A big difference from Raid 1 and 2 is blood. A lot of blood here and sometimes it feels like I am watching The Walking Dead. The fighting scenes are diversified with different weapons, including three female characters. They fought a few of the best fights in this movie.
Some other fights are not that great and feel like coming back to Jackie Chan's early days. you can see people are just waiting back there when they had many chances to simply attack from behind. Some of the martial arts are not that "real" and feel "staged". In contrast, the fights in Raid 1 is clear, quick, and makes you hold your breath. There are quite a few scenes that one superhero fights multiple bad guys and walks out alive. As one comment says, they never die.
I would cut some of the blood scenes and make the fight more real by putting them one to one in a frame (such as a narrow hallway) not in a big open space.
Shooter (2016)
Like a video game
Those who rated this show high probably didn't finish watching the first season. It started okay with a good story but then it turned into something ridiculous. it seems like no one in the show ever has a plan, they just keep bumping into each other anytime they want. Everyone wanted to kill everyone but when they do meet in person, they have a deal. Then they go back and plan on killing each other again. It was just like the video games that I played. I know I have at least 3 lives to spend. The main character faked death but soon lost his cover, but no one cared anymore and he called his wife anytime he wanted, had sex with his wife, and had a family picnic somewhere. it took everyone a looooong time to realize that maybe they should kidnap his family to get to him. Before that, no one was watching his family even though they all know the guy who tried to kill the president was still alive. Then again, he met with his enemies in battle field or in offices, and killed bunch of small pawns and left, before coming back tomorrow.
