Not many films in history have acheived such a double...

The double I refer to is the fact that this film manages to be both completely and utterly ridiculous AND boring at the same time.

Many films have acheived one or t'other but somehow this film manages to acheive both.

The idea is nice, in fact I quite like it but the execution is appalling - pacing, characters, script and casting are just not good enough to make the idea work successfully. Abysmal.

Almost EXCELLENT but...

I wouldn't normally waste my time reviewing a film that has been reviewed so many times and had everything that can be said about it, said about it. However after reading through many of the reviews here it seems that not one person has mentioned the points I would like to make.

First of all, this film really divides the audience primarily into two camps - those that can stomach the subject matter and those that cannot. Then within each of those camps you have those that thought the acting/script/production etc good and those that didn't. Some mention flaws in some scenes, such as Cage all too easily finding the girl's identity (big deal, in real life he either wouldn't have been able to find her at all - in which case the film would have ended there or it would have taken him months to years - in which case the film would have been a bit too long!) and guns not picked up from the correct side of the bed etc. (again, big deal, one could pick apart pretty much any thriller ever made if one really desires to). However, if one can stomach the subject matter and overlook these minor flaws, then what you have here is a sordid and gripping thriller (particularly the first half), apart from two MAJOR flaws.

Both flaws are actually one and the same, although one happens half way through and one at the very end. I refer to the ridiculous and uneccessary explanations given for i) the motive of the film being requested ("because he can") and ii) the motive of the killer ("because I like it"). First of all, these are such weak and shallow explanations but worse is the contrived and false way that the lines are delivered, almost as if they were added to the script last minute as an afterthought. Much better it would have been if either they were not given at all (leaving the audience to ponder "why?"), or a more indepth, more honest and deeper explanation given.

Aside from this, I think it's a well-made, atmospheric and gripping thriller, however the flaws I mention are extremely detrimental to the overall feel of the film, to the point of belittling itself and thus severely reducing it's impact... a real shame.

Svengali (1954)

Tommy Wiseau's "The Room" meets "The Red Shoes"...

This is quite an unusual film in that certain scenes don't make a lot of sense - storylines are clumsily and swiftly manifested with no real development and thus there is no real tension when there needs to be, however, it is visually interesting and at times beautifully lit and shot with great and believable sets.

I'm not sure if the script or the editing is at fault but think that it's some of both in equal measure that leaves the viewer at times thinking "Why was that just said?" or "Why did that character just behave like that?" or "How much time has passed between the last scene and this scene?" or "Ok, so this now appears to be the main thread of the story, why was it so long in being made apparent and why was it developed so clumsily" etc. These questions arising really put in my mind the appalling (but awfully good fun) script, and (lack of) continuity of Tommy Wiseau's "The Room".

Apart from it's script and editing/continuity reminding me of "The Room" and the storyline being reminiscient of "The Red Shoes" - possessive control-freak older man, seeks to control young woman performing against the will of her lover, - "Svengali" also reminds me of another unusual film set in Paris and made in the 1950s called "Man On The Eiffel Tower". This film is also visually interesting and nicely art-directed but also suffers from (at times) an unintelligable script and very poor continuity.

The intention of "Svengali" is of course good but poor execution of basic story-telling damages the impact of the film substantially - but I still quite liked it!

Look out for the very young and beautiful, (uncredited - even though he has some lines), great Jeremy Brett in his first feature.

The FIRST and ONLY time I couldn't see a film through to the end...

Thoroughly sickening, mindless ultra-gore with NO redeeming elements whatsoever.

I thought John Wick was about as mindless as film making could get (see my review) but this makes Wick look like an art-house classic.

Depraved and reprehensible beyond belief... the makers should be strung-up for all eternity.

More an 'A-' movie than a 'B' movie...

For me, a thoroughly enjoyable, well-paced, beautifully shot and above-par acted thriller.

The locations are interesting and vibrant, the fight scenes are well choreographed, fast (for their time) and thus more realistic than most I've seen from this period and the plot twist interesting enough, even 60 years later.

It is for me, slightly reminiscent of a Hitchcock thriller with elements of an early Bond film. It also reminds me of a very good 1950s 'story for boys'.

I have given it a 9/10 simply to try and counterbalance the unfairly low rating it has so far received - in reality I would rate it a 7 or 7½.

Recommended to anyone interested in film-noir, 1950s Paris and/or appreciative of the beauty of mid-century Technicolor.

The marketing posters should have read:

"101 DIABOLICAL MORONIC MINUTES"

"A BARRAGE OF APPALLING PREPOSTEROUS NONSENSE"

"A TOTAL EMBARRASSMENT TO THE ART OF FILM-MAKING"

"AN ABSOLUTE ABOMINATION - THE LIKES OF WHICH CAN NEVER BE EQUALLED"

"A COMPLETE AND UTTER DISGRACE TO HUMANITY"

I'll make this as concise as possible because I don't want to give this film any more time than I already have.

This film is completely one dimensional, devoid of script and therefore has absolutely no character depth, nuance, beauty, interest or message and thus we are left with a deluge of meaningless, non-stop violence in the name of revenge.

Apart from the sequel to this film (which incredibly, plumbs to at least equally low depths), probably Keanu's worst outing - and he has had a few bad ones.

It was no surprise to me that the "director" is NOT a director at all but actually a fight choreographer because that is pretty much all this film contains - and in my opinion, neither well choreographed nor well-shot fighting scenes at that!

In a nutshell, it watches like a video game on automatic play and as the poster (should have) said; a complete and utter disgrace to humanity, though no doubt revered by the brain-dead of the 21st century gaming generation.
