Casino (1995)
A worthless series of events, and Stone can lick my marbles.
The Scorcese/De Niro/Pesci teaming should work on all levels, such as in RAGING BULL and GOODFELLAS. However, this film fails in too many places, which deteriorates the well-intentioned scenes. Romantic side-stories, such as the one in De Niro's HEAT, rely on uncompromising female counterparts to mangle the story, the hero's strength, and the overall enjoyment of the movie. Now, here we have Sharon Stone. Her character is so imbalanced, from the time she is introduced, to the end, that there really is no justification for it. Here are some major flaws with her performance/character:
* She's on top of the world at the beginning.
* She snags a millionaire playboy, Sam.
* She still has feelings for Lester (ragged James Woods).
* Golddigger.
* Child endangerment issues.
* Screws Nicky (Pesci) several times.
* Druggie.
Now, what kind of a woman, for no real reason at all, would ditch the rather handsome Sam, to screw Lester and Nicky. Her character is so unreasonable, that we want to see her killed, like Nicky and his brother. All scenes, without Stone, are quite enthralling. When she enters the ring, keep your finger on the FF button on your remote.
Hostel (2005)
Couldn't Sit Still Through This
After some friends told me that people were gasping and squirming through the torture scenes in this film, I decided not to see this in the theater, to avoid the distractions. So I bought the unrated DVD and finally got a chance to see if it lived up to its hype. No disappointments here! People complain about the first half being too gratuitous and juvenile with nudity, but when it picks up, it is truly a terrifying experience. I enjoyed the pacing, there were times when I felt sick, the acting was reasonably good and torture seemed genuinely realistic even though the plot was extremely far-fetched. Anybody who sees this without clenching their fists or curling up their toes or not having their heart beat fast several times through it, is not human. It has to be the most violently sadistic mainstream film in the history of film-making. I liken it to an awesome roller-coaster ride! Highly recommended, indeed! 8/10
Rush: R30 (2005)
MindFudge
I never thought much about Rush before seeing the R30 Concert, except for the fact that Neil Peart was a god. However, after watching this blistering performance, which hooks you in like nothing else with its 13 some-odd minute musical jam session which starts it all, I understand why these guys are cultural icons. My only complaint is the unnecessary use of Jerry Stiller (Frank Costanza) at the beginning and end of the performance on the wide screen. I'm sure the Germans were rather indifferent to it, as would anyone would be. But holy crepes, this band is tight as hell. Geddy Lee is flawless in voice and kick-butt bass playing. Alex Lifeson still rocks with sonic ingenuity. And Neil Peart - I can watch just him for the entire show without anything else as he is simply perfect and the best drummer in rock history. Highly recommended to Rush lovers and naysayers alike.
