Kingdom Hospital: Butterfingers (2004)
Good overall, cop out ending
Starts off nicely - but the ending is very weak. Time reversal plot lines seldom work, and when combined with ham fisted attempts at a moral and cheesy dialogue the ending is made all the bitter. There is really only the one storyline at work here - in fact, it feels like a filler episode, what with the episode ending where it began. This could slot in anywhere in the series really, hardly any references to past episodes are found, bar comments about Stegmans "mistake." The tank scenes were done well, but found the amplified voice of Paul a little grating. Again - I have major issues with the score and feel that it drags not only the over sentimental scenes down, but the episode as a whole (due to the already hypersensitive script.) Thomas Newman really does have a lot to answer for with regards to the piano work for American Beauty. Anytime something remotely sad is hinted at, out comes the baby grand and the tape re-verb...
Man to Man with Dean Learner (2006)
Episode 1
I am so disappointed. After waiting for 3 years for repeats/the DVD of the original masterpiece series "Darkplace" i couldn't wait for this series. The first episode just ended and I am appalled. Everything that was great about Darkplace has been erased here, pretty much. Worst introduction: canned laughter. this takes the original point of it away and just renders it nearly unwatchable. (one joke about Garth's eyes fertilizing the audience was good... the rest i can hardly remember...) it feels like a poor quality "Knowing Me, Knowing You." I hope this improves as the series goes on, otherwise i shall be seriously disappointed. back to "Darkplace..."
