High School Musical 2 (2007)
marginally better than the first try
A slightly better plot than that of the original film, but in most ways as pitiful a window into the Disney folks' pandering to a retrograde swath of the downward-spiraling American culture as was the first film.
While one of the mildly sexual heterosexual couples manages a few chaste kisses at the end of the film (certainly not of the tongue-involved kisses that might be more expected of contemporary teens), in all other ways the kids portrayed are ridiculously chaste and clean living.
Compare this with the films of the FAME genre and(hopefully) you'll see how far we've failed to come.
High School Musical (2006)
the taliban might even approve
Romantically entangled High Schoolers who don't kiss? Students who drink milk with their lunches? A "be true to yourself" message that includes all the timidly heterosexual students (none of whom struggle with their sexual identity)? Ridiculously stereotyped faculty members and parents who can do no wrong by their kids?
As many have mentioned, this is a shameful throwback to the early-mid 20th century.
I'm not sure whether this paints a more bleak picture of the Disney operation or of a wide swath of the downward-spiraling American culture.
