Killers of the Flower Moon (2023)
I have adhd and I couldn't stop watching it
It's an amazing film which reminded me of the beauty of cinema. I can't say for sure bc I'm not Native American but it seemed really respectful of the Osage people. It's a beautiful, beautiful movie visually, it's imersive of Osage culture and it's important to shed a light of the injustice the Osage people suffered. All acting is great, but Gladstone's and DeNiro's performances were another level. It made me want to research more about it. The visuals, the soundtrack, the acting, the attention to historical coeherence, all of it. It's more than 3 hours long but it doesn't feel like it at all and I wished they had made it longer (be in a mini-series format). I didn't give it a 10 bc I think some more little details could have been included (like Ernest went on to rob Osage people after released on parole and what happened to John Ramsay) but almost a perfect movie.
Barbie (2023)
I laughed, I felt understood, I felt touched
I laughed, I felt understood, I felt touched. It's so relatable as a woman and as person trying to navigate this world. It made me remind me as child and me now, as a 24 year old woman. I liked it more than I was anticipating. Great movie. The "ask him about the Godfather" was sending me. And the whole monologue about the contradictory expectations of womanhood, it was too relatable. Everything America Ferrera's character said, everything. The movie also touches on what it means to be a person, and the ending when Barbie decides she wants to experience what it's like to be human, it was also very touching. Also when Ken realises his idendity shouldn't revolve around Barbie. I don't give it a 10 cause I don't consider it perfect, but it's very close to it.
Painkiller (2023)
A worsened version of Dopesick
I have watched Dopesick before and decided to give it a try. Dopesick is way better but this isn't too bad but still some things were way off. They are so many really cringe scenes specially on the first 3 episodes. Then there are fillers and parts of the history that feel rushed. The soundtrack is good but for the most part out of place. Why are they playing Heroin from the Velvet Underground in a recovery scene from a man who has addicted to Oxy but never touched heroin??? I'm confusion. Arthur's ghost I was like wtf???
The starting scenes with real people who were affected are devasting. It's enfuriating the Sacklers still retained a great deal of their money and never faced jail time. Also one thing I didn't know were the fluffy toys. But most of the history is told better in Dopesick.
Im Westen nichts Neues (2022)
Few films managed to impact me as much as this
As a German learner, Im Westen Nichts Neues was the first book I read in German so i was hyped when I found out Netflix was adapting it. I hadn't seen any of the previous adaptations, nor the 1930 nor the 1979 one. I knew all the main characters would die but when the deaths happened it was as impacteful as if I didn't. It's beautifully shot. The music adds up to the scenes. It feels very realistic, it felt like someone got back in time, got a good camera and filmed what happened in those trenches. It shows war without any embellishment or glory: war is hell and futile misery. It captured the book's atmosphere, their hunger, their exhaustion and all their struggles to ultimately die a pointless death. Great acting. Congrats to everyone involved into making this film.
The Northman (2022)
A masterpiece
One of the best cinematic experiences of my entire life. I can't even put into words how amazing this film is. I had very high expectations and it met them all.
La passion de Jeanne d'Arc (1928)
One of the best female performances in the cinema's history
Everything is well done, but the most remarkable thing, doubtlessly, is Renée Falconetti's performance.
Requiem for a Dream (2000)
The most disturbing portrait of addiction I've seen on film
The title pretty much sums up it all. You'll remember the performances way after this film end. Most of films I've seen about addiction didn't show a portrait as raw as this film, it's almost psychological horror
13 Reasons Why (2017)
Good soundtrack, good acting, flaws on the script, I didn't like show they showed suicide
Ok, the soundtrack was really impressive, really good stuff, Jesus and Mary Chain, The Cure, Joy Division and Codeine, and some more artists I couldn't identify 'cause I discovered while watching the show. The acting, especially Hannah, Clay and I could say Justin and Alex, which where for me, the 2 most likeable characters (Justin not telling Jessica was really fucked up, but besides that I could feel some sympathy for him) were also really good. The rape scene also, was really deep, her blank, empty face and her inability to react (what may happen in trauma situations). Sincerely, besides rape not much really awful happened to her. Everyone feels lonely and lost when you're a teenager. People say mean stuff, and do stupid lists, like in every fucking school, just ignore it and keep living. People always find little details to critise someone, everywhere, you just can't allow yourself to care that much. Her parents are nicer than the average parents. One of the biggest pressures when you're a teenager is college and a career. Her parents just say relax and choose what you love. I know they had money issues and that would be a problem to her get into college, but anyway, they weren't putting pressure on her. Everything Alex did was do a list and he felt so guilty he tried to kill himself. Other thing, she's always expecting people to come to her after she tells them to fuck off, that is basically why Clay and Mr. Porter on the taps. She seems like seeking revenge. Clay and Alex feel so guilty they freak out. I also thought it could be shorter. (I may add more details to this review in the future)
