Excellent synopsis of the Fall of Jerusalem and Why
31 July 2009
This video is an excellent summary of the political environment that encouraged the Jews of the first century to push against Roman domination so hard that Rome had to take notice. Israel had been appeased by Rome for a very long time. But in this final revolt Rome (under Nero who was already having problems with Jews and supposedly Christians elsewhere in the Empire) decided it was time to dispatch this thorn in the side of the Empire once and for all. Vespasian was sent to do the job in 67 AD, but then Nero died and Vespasian returned to Rome to claim the throne. Later Vespasian sent his son Titus to finish Jerusalem. After a long siege, the walls of Jerusalem fell to Rome and the city was burned. The Jews inside continued to move inward until the last remaining ones were gathered in the Temple which was burned down over them as they cried out to God for salvation that would not come as it had in the past.

The album is better than the video
22 April 2008
Warning: Spoilers
It had to be a really hard thing to do a big musical production on stage without the budget of a big Broadway play. But Styx did a pretty good job I think. I have loved the album for years. But the video quality itself stinks. Time for an upgrade. The music is just stereo. And the "acting" portion really does leave something to be desired here. Great rockers - marginal actors.

I just didn't feel there was enough of a transition from the storytelling to the concert section. The return to the "present" to finish the theatrical part was a better transition but still pretty awkward. Maybe it all seemed better live but on the video it might not have been cut correctly. Yeah, let's blame it on the editor.

Overall the music is timeless and satisfying; the video of the production won't stand the test of time but can still be kind of fun in a retro-way.

Great follow-up to a great story
22 December 2006
I haven't seen this film in a long time. But I remember really enjoying it and that it surprised me how good it was. The production values are generally TV quality. On the other hand, the story is very effective and personal. This was a portion of Keller's life that had not been portrayed often. Mare Winningham and Blythe Danner seem ideal for these roles. I wish it was more readily available for repeat viewing.

I didn't know that Keller went on to such heights of education and socialization. Considering where she came from, the amount of normalcy that she achieved is incredible. But it should never be forgotten that this was due to Annie Sullivan dedicating (and to a large degree substituting) her life so that Helen might have one. What dedication! What devotion! What patience with another struggling human being!
