Fallout (2024)
Looking forward to Season 2
This series was a wonderful surprise. I thought after the first two episodes that it was not going to grab me, but it did from Episode 3 onward. There is something about a video game that makes me, at least, think that there can be no humanity about it. But the lead actors bring great emotion to the series. I was more than impressed with Ella Purnell and Walton Goggins in particular. They were the twin bridges that made a video based series real, and it had some not so subtle connections to the dystopian world we currently may be creating. I am disappointed that apparently we will have to wait until 2026 to see Season 2. I hope there is something that can be done about that. Anyone out there listening?
The Gentlemen (2024)
Fabulously Entertaining Series
Has it all. Great acting on the part of all the characters. It is loaded with dark humour. The two leads, Theo James as His Grace Eddie and Kaya Scodelario as Susie Glass have the bored smirk that is almost a smile or is it a grimace, down pat. They have an inside joke going between them, along some great sexual tension. Should they kill each other or make love? The series keeps you on the edge of your chair or sofa waiting waiting for the next, violent jack out of the box. And I was never disappointed. There isn't a weak actor among them. There is something to say about all of them, but I will pick two. They are Vinnie Jones and Michael Vu. Oh, and number three, his nibs played by Daniel Ings is Perfection. Great writing, casting, etc., not a weak bone in it.
Monsieur Spade (2024)
Great start
This was a strong eight until the final episode. Then it fell off of a bridge, literally and figuratively. I thoroughly enjoyed the first five episodes. The plot was great, kept me guessing and the acting was excellent, especially that of Cara Bossom, who surely is destined for stardom. But somewhere along the way, and it was in episode six, it, well, it lost me. The wrap to the series featured a lady who seemed to hold all the major characters enthralled as she turned them into cardboard cutouts as she "wrapped" up all the mysteries from the series in a teacher's voice explaining it to the simpletons on the screen with her and in those of us in the audience.
Oppenheimer (2023)
A stunner of a movie
This is simply said a riveting and oscar worthy film. It is mesmerizing and I say that having sat through the three hours it runs without any urge to take an intermission break. Cillian Murphy certainly deserves an oscar and I would add Robert Downey Jr's perfornance to that category as well. In fact, the film is a who's who of top actors and everyone of them bring their A game. I could quibble with the necessity for one scene which seemed a little gratuitous. But overall, the film perfectly captures the conundrum of science, the benefits and unknowns coming from it, and the inhumanity of those who would put their personal ambition above everything.
The Curse (2023)
The Curse says it all.
Wow, this is comedy???? No, it is cringedy, my just made up word. Several discussions about small penises and even a chance to view one in the first episode was very engaging, not. . Then I managed to get through half of episode 2 and that was it. Because of Emma Stone, I got that far hoping to see something of interest, anything to keep me engaged from the plot, from the actors from the dialogue. It just wasn't there for me. Perhaps awkward situations set with awkward dialogue and a lot of distressed looking people might be considered comedy for some, but I just felt like looking away and so I did. Oh and very aptly named. The Curse says it all.
Saltburn (2023)
Saltburn - A psycho drama or a farce
Saltburn began with the story line; poor, disadvantaged boy trying to make his way into the posh world he only dreamed of being a part of. The lead character, Oliver, generates a genuine sense of longing as he abases himself in his efforts to ingratiate himself into the graces of a rich classmate. And he is successful. But then gradually emerges the manipulative psychopath that Oliver is. The story is dark and entirely believable up to a point. The acting is superb across the board, but I have to wonder why an incredibly wealthy family that Oliver takes control of could be so naive and so easily manipulated. Then as the number of deaths at the hands of Oliver grow, where are the constabulary? And while I see the 2005 Pride and Prejudice connection of adding Carey Mulligan to the film alongside Rosamund Pike, why waste her talents in a throwaway role? The film got off to a great start with a very talented group of actors, but saw the plot deteriorate into an unsavory farce.
Sanditon (2019)
The Tale of Two Stories
March 2021 - I really can't believe ITV canceled this series after one season. And as another reviewer noted, why all the hate from the so-called critics? Do they have it in for Andrew Davies, or his interpretation of Jane Austen's Unfinished Novel? The cast, sets and costuming are superb! I absolutely agree with many viewers that the chemistry between the leads is unbelievable. They really heat up the screen just by looking at each other as Rose Williams and Theo James totally nail their roles. The storyline is wonderful and it begs for a Season 2 at a minimum. This is a must watch for those who love great British period drama and will burnish the primacy of British acting in the United States and around the world if given a proper chance! Come on ITV or Amazon or Netflix or somebody and give us that season 2!
Update 2023 - Well, we got that Season 2 and a Season 3 but we also got a total rewrite of the story line because of the departure of so many actors including the lead, Theo James. Because of this, Season 2/3 do not feel like a continuation but a new show with new characters created that have little do with Jane Austen's fragment, Sanditon. Season 1 remains a 9 in my book but I struggled to give the continuation seasons a 5. Hence my composite rating of 6 based on the final two seasons.
Barry (2018)
Wow I don't know what to say after enjoying all episodes until S2 E5. This episode just blew me away with weirdness. I hope this is not a harbinger of the future for Barry.
I don't know what this episode was all about. Keep getting up until you get killed because what, maybe we're all high on something? I tried to find something in it, but I just got bored. For me, this episode was a big come down for what had been one of my fav series - up there with Big Bang Theory and Game of Thrones.
