Hereditary (2018)
Dull, Uneventful, Uninspired, Unimaginative
I am a firm believer than every Horror movie is worth watching. This one might be the exception. This movie gets far too much praise and far too much hype that it simply does not deserve. It was just dull, uneventful, uninspired, and unimaginative. And no, I didn't think it was boring because I didn't understand it. I understood it perfectly. I didn't like it because it was lame from the beginning to the end. The plot, if you can call it that, was seriously lacking any creativity or imagination. The entire story could have been told in a short 15 minute segment but instead it was drawn out over a painful 2 hours of mind-numbing gormlessness. The filmmaker apparently thought visage could create tension and make a Horror movie, because that is mostly what the film relies on- a lot over extreme close-ups of unappealing and unpleasant facial expressions that all lasted far longer than anyone should ever have to be witness to. As mentioned, I believe every Horror film is worth watching. Be warned, this one is probably not. It definitely wasn't for me.
Late Night with the Devil (2023)
It immersed me into the story like no other movie has
I loved it. I thought it was very well done from start to finish. Great esthetics, excellent acting, and an interesting new way of immersing the audience into the story. It's probably not for everyone. I've heard people complain about the ending, some saying it was confusing and others saying it ended too abruptly. But for me, it was just about perfect. *Spolier Alert* I really liked the point of view of an audience being hypnotized and being forced to hallucinate. Seeing what Jack was experiencing and realizing that it was all a hallucination caused by the demon to get Jack to sacrifice Lilly to complete his deal really impressed me. I was smiling from ear to ear by the time the credits began rolling.
Blue Hour: The Disappearance of Nick Brandreth (2023)
This Faux Documentary is Just Okay
This Faux Documentary could have been so much better than it was. The story is quite exceptionally interesting and had so much potential that was sadly mostly wasted. The majority of the actors are really vary good and believable. But a few are so bad it ruins entire scenes. The special effects are not bad at all. In fact, they are actually quite impressive for a low budget Faux Documentary. It was way too long for what it was. It could have easily been twenty to thirty minutes shorter and nothing important in anyway would have been left out. I became so bored that I was thinking about other things and at one point I almost forgot what I was watching. Luckily, that was when it picked up and got very interesting. It left me feeling good about the ending. Hence the 6 star rating. In my opinion, it is definitely worth the watch, as long as you go in knowing there are a few almost intolerable scenes.
Monster Hunter (2020)
Looked Incredibly Good But....
It looked incredibly good, but it bounced around leaving extremely large gaps in the story. I've never played, or had even heard of, the video game. So I am guessing that is why I felt like the movie made no sense and was nothing more than Mila Jovovich flying around killing monsters that had killed dozens of other soldiers and warriors with ease. The action was colossally over the top, even for an action movie of its nature and style. Every single battle with Mila Jovovich against a monster had a "nick of time" scene. It was so repetitive that it became cliché before half of the movie was done. I gave it 5 stars because it looked so good and Mila Jovovich is always fun to watch, no matter how ludicrous her character is. This movie is definitely only for people who enjoy watching Mila Jovovich be a fabulously over the top action hero.
Demon House (2019)
100% Faux. Completely Fictional and Not Entertaining At All
I watched it before reading any of the reviews. After watching this joke, I read some reviews that were better and more entertaining than the movie itself was. The narration is like a strong barbiturate. I've never watched the TV series from this director, I cannot imagine how anyone made it through a single episode listening to this guy speak. He is so boring! To make matters worse the story was boring and obviously pure fiction. My nephew has lived in Indiana for years and he said he had never heard of any such case. He also said no one he knows knew anything about it beyond this supposed documentary. It should be sold as what it is. A Faux Documentary. It is still awful. But, it would be easier to find something entertaining in this garbage if it was not being pushed as "real."
Crowsnest (2012)
The acting isn't bad, that's only good thing I can say
*Spoiler Alert* The first absolutely ridiculously idioc thing I can mention is the characters all stood in the road after one of them was almost run over by the RV, then proceeded to stand in the road after one of them was actually mowed down! Not a single one of the group even once suggested that maybe standing in the road, with a maniac driving an RV around that they believe is trying to kill them, is not the best of ideas. Instead they all repeatedly leave the vehicle continue to stand in the road with the maniac RV driver "trying to kill them!" Next ludicrous thing. What kind of a moran would start hiking through woods they know nothing about, leaving one injured person with one healthy person to supposedly care for the hurt person in a broken down vehicle on the road the maniac RV driver that is trying to kill them is on? Third completely stupid thing. What kind of brainless idiot would keep recording while having troubles navigating a terrain? The camera appeared to be making it more difficult and yet he refused to stop recording after pouting and stopping away from his friend and lover? I get having to come up with a reason to film to make a Found Footage Film, but no one would keep filming if it was making your life more difficult. Filmnwhen there is something to film. An hour and 10 minutes of eventless film, and less than 10 minutes of enjoyment seeing or watching the annoying characters get what they deserve for being so stupid and ignorant. I gave it 2 stars because the acting was actually pretty good. Innis the only good thing about the movie, though.
Unknown Visitor (2019)
It was so bad I felt sorry for the visitor
Where to begin about the incredibly bad points of this movie... The acting was so atrocious it was funny! The actors attempts at pretending to be drunk were outrageously hilarious. It made me wonder if the actors were all straightedge and had never seen an actual intoxicated person in their lives, let alone had a sip of alcohol themselves. I know I am coming across like I am exaggerating about how bad the acting was, and I would not suggest watching to movie to find out if I am telling the truth, but I am being more than sincere. It really was that bad! I never watch trailers or reading reviews before watching a movie, I prefer going in blind to get the full experience of surprise. This is a case I regret that decision. I suggest watching the trailer before wasting your time on this film. The trailer shows you everything you need to know about it. (Full disclosure, I watched the trailer with my wife after I watched the movie to have a laugh with her. And laugh she did!)
Left Behind (2021)
There is nothing good at all about this movie.
It's not at all difficult to express why this movie was so terribly bad. Everything about it from the very beginning to the very end was absolutely horrendously awful. The supposed "Americans" spoke with such poorly done American accents that they sounded drunk or on some kind of downers. It was actually pathetic. The actors screamed and yelled more than anything, which was beyond annoying! Truly one of the worst portrayals of Americans I have ever seen performed by foreign actors. There was no story, and the scenes made no sense. Why the characters got themselves into the situations they were in was never explained and it probably couldn't be. This film was obviously just a way to pit down Americans by people who quite simply hate them. The film makers might as well have just made a movie called "Americans are ignorant, drunk, and angry people." It would have been more entertaining than this 1 hour and 24 minute long statement of disgust. What an awful movie. Nothing about it was good.
Leave the World Behind (2023)
Suspenseful and Entertaining
The movie is just over 2 hours long but it kept me engaged the entire time so I honestly did not notice the time go by. The story is very suspenseful and kept me questioning what was happening and who was to blame from the onset of the issues the characters were experiencing until the very end of the film. The acting was absolutely superb! Every single actor gave an incredible and believable performance, adding to the suspense that continued to build. The film reminded of Hitchcock's style and the film makers did a wonderful job creating and keeping the atmosphere bleak and eerie. I truly enjoyed the movie and highly recommend it for anyone who loves Hitchcockian style suspense/drama/thrillers.
Butterfly Kisses (2018)
Well done documentary style Found Footage Film
It has a very interesting concept and back story. It is a fake documentary about found footage that was to be used to make a Found Footage Film. A film that I would actually really love to see in its entirety. It is too bad the film makers did not complete and release the movie this mocumentary is about. I think more people would watch and enjoy it than have watched and enjoyed this film. The acting is believable, the editing and directing is very good. The sound is very well done, in that there is an obvious difference between the microphones actors are wearing, the boom mic, and the mic of a camera. Many Found Footage Films mess that up, but this one was believable. I also really liked the concept and story behind the antagonistic, the Blinkman.
A Town Full of Ghosts (2022)
It fell very far short of its potential, but ended well
The movie started out incredibly strong with a very interesting idea. I would love to be able to afford to purchase a ghost town three hours from the nearest neighbor. Especially if it is actually haunted! That would be a dream come true for myself and my wife. Unfortunately, the movie did not remain on the great path it had started out on. After the strong intro the film slowed to a crawl for 40 minutes or so, when some small speckles of events- however, still nothing to really keep the interest. It is not until a couple of minutes before the ending that the movie ultimately becomes eventful. The finally was fun, hence the 3 star rating, though it could have and should have been much better. It is such a shame the potential was wasted.
Hell House LLC Origins: The Carmichael Manor (2023)
A perfectly awful addition to a terrible franchise
The story is simply monotonous, and it takes far too long for nothing of interest at all to happen. It is just one more perfectly awful addition to a terrible franchise. It seriously is a wonder how the film makers can manage to get funding even for such low budget Found Footage Films with as execrable as they all have been. And this one is no different. True to form, the acting and editing are absolutely atrocious. How no one who worked on this film thought the blood, gore, makeup, and costumes looked worse than a bad 70's b-movie Slasher flick, and why anyone would have thought they needed to make such a unimaginative and boring movie an hour and 38 minutes long is beyond my comprehension. But, it would not be a proper Hell House LLC movie if this installment had been any better.
Blood (2022)
A very underrated Vampire movie
This movie really took me by complete surprise. I never watch trailers / spoilers or read reviews before watching a movie, I prefer going into a film completely ignorant of the story so I can form an unadulterated opinion. At First, I thought it was going to be your typical run of the mill evil children type, but to my absolute astonishment, I was completely incorrect. Quite the opposite. The kids were not evil at all, just hungry. The story was actually very good, the overall film production and effects were exceptional, the acting was top-notch, and the movie was riveting just about from beginning to end. Such a great Vampire film.
The Return of the Living Dead (1985)
The Best of the Best of Horror and Zombies
The Return of the Living Dead (1985) is without any doubt whatsoever the absolute best of the best of Horror and Zombie films.
I cannot understand how anyone could not rate it as the very best Zombie movie ever. It has absolutely everything; Horror, Comedy, Romance, Gore, a great story, good acting, great production, great editing, great direction, only a small amount of nudity and no sex scenes, and an absolutely fantastic ending- not to mention that it started the idea that zombies eat brains. It's the kind of movie that leaves you smiling for hours and thinking about it for days after watching it. 10/10.
The Tank (2023)
A very underrated Creature Feature
This movie is seriously and very sadly underrated. I thought it was absolutely a great Creature Feature with an excellent 80's feel, without all of the annoying 80's Creature Feature sex scenes and pointless nudity. The story was very interesting and not exactly predictable, the characters were not at all annoying and did not constantly make stupid mistakes and bad decisions, the creatures looked great (I have not seen as good looking creatures in a movie since A Quite Place,) and the ending was appeasing if not satisfying- it did not leave me with the big "WTF?" mindset most newer Creature Features leave me with.
The Void (2016)
Event Horizon Meets The Thing
It was very entertaining from the beginning straight through to the end. The movie started with a bang and never really calmed down. It has a very good 80's style with no noticeable CGI that ruined any imagery. The movie reminded me of the demonic presence from another dimension from Event Horizon (1992) mixed with the creature of The Thing (1982.) The story was interesting and not at all predictable. I was honestly surprised when the villain was revealed. The heroes of the movie were not exactly likeable but I also didn't want them to fail. Overall, the film was very well done. Definitely recommended for 80's creature feature lovers.
Hell House LLC (2015)
It's probably the worst representation of a Found Footage Film in the history of cinema.
The acting was absolutely awful, even the spectators in the film acted terribly bad. The editing was worse than a first year film student that thinks their too good to go to class, which is likely what the makers of this movie and its sequels are. The constant "reminders" make it apparent the film makers think the audience is going to be made up of brainless imbeciles who cannot pay any attention at all while watching a film. The jump scares were poorly placed, so I knew they were going to happen and did not experience the thrill. I gave it 1/10. I would have given it 0/10 if I could have. It is an absolute disgrace to the FFF genre. It is sad that people see this film and are turned off to the genre due to how bad it is and yet it still gets hype.
Behind the Sightings (2021)
It could have been so much better!
I had such high hopes after the beginning, which was great! But, sadly the rest if the film did not live up to its promise. I gave it 4 stars because the acting was good and believable. It just wasn't a great film.
*Spoiler Alert* No one, not even a journalist, would follow someone dressed as a clown carrying a baseball bat into dark woods they've never been before. And, if I felt like someone was trying to kill me at a spot where "sightings" happened, I'd be a lot more careful when going to other locations of "sightings." The stupidity of the supposed film makers basically killed it for me. The footage from the convenience store was awesome though.
