Very good - a gripping mystery
1 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
There's not really too much that can be said without giving away spoilers, so I'll just focus on the mystery angle. From early on, the show sets up questions and suspense around the death of the lead - with good characters and a nice pace, I was gripped throughout. The final episode was particularly intense.

The acting was decent, the production was very polished and there's plot twists to keep one engaged throughout - however, some of the topics explored may be difficult viewing for some.

Lastly - It's a shame that the most popular and upvoted review on here is a negative one from somebody who admits that they switched it off during the first episode - how can you review a show when you haven't even seen past the first episode? Take it with a pinch of salt.

Highly recommended - 7/10.

Why so harsh?
4 June 2023
I'm picky about what I watch and only found this by accident on the ITVX app - I started watching and was instantly drawn in by the story and ended up binge watching all six episodes.

While not a masterpiece or anything, I thought this was really good. Lots of twists and turns, good performances by all the actors and the pace was excellent. There's so much going on but never too much that it's overwhelming - lots of twists and turns and the final episode gives you everything you want to know. There is no stone left unturned - no major plot holes that I caught and I think the writers did a good job.

There's not many ratings on this site and only a small number of reviews, so don't be put off and give it a chance to form your own opinion.

7/10.

If you're a fan of Nick Love's previous, you'll love it
26 March 2023
I'm pretty surprised to see these low scores (but not at the same time). I thought this show was fantastic. As fan of Nick Love's early films, like Goodbye Charlie Bright & The Business, this was somewhat of a throwback and his unique style was all over it. From the bright colours, to the excellent cinematography and the array of colourful characters that we've seen in his works before, this was classic 'Nick Love'.

The plot keeps you on your toes but it's the performances and characters which made this show a joy to watch. Tahirah Sharif put in the peformance of her career - an absolute bad ass of a character.

This is not particuarly realistic, or true to real life, so if you're looking for something like that than this is not the one. The musical/theatrical scenes were a little over done at times. However, as a fan of gritty british gangster films I can't give this series anything lower than a 9/10 - I crave shows like this but they don't come around often.

Don't be put off by the reviews on here - some of the low scores are absolutely ridiculous to be honest. The production quality, writing, editing, acting performances and cinematography was all top notch, so anyone scoring this as a 3/10 is having a laugh and not being reasonable.

Worth a watch
22 December 2022
Reviews of this seem to be quite scathing but I actually thought it was quite good - it's not award winning or anything but a relatively easy watch with good tension building and some memorable scenery and characters.

I found the lead to be quite good in her role and some of the supporting cast were very convincing with their aristocratic portrayals. For movies like this, the casting can make or break it and I thought they did really well.

I actually didn't expect what was coming in the final act but it delivered, for me anyways, as I didn't have high expectations coming into it. I probably would watch it again as well. Some reviewers seem to have a massive problem with some of the generation Z language - I kind of get that but it was only a few cringy lines and not a showstopper or anything.

6.25/10.

What an ending
13 November 2022
The last episode is one of the best finales to a mini series I have ever seen. It's commonplace for writers to flake out these days and use the old 'interpret it yourself' ending as a guise for not knowing how to end their story properly - that's certainly not the case here.

I'll keep this review short and sweet. At the start I wasn't sure where this was all going and didn't quite have the patience to carry on. I left it for a week or so and came back and was certainly glad I did. Things really start to escalate mid-series. If you're reading this after watching the first episode, I'd say carry on. The finale blew me away on many levels. Enjoy.

A waste of time
26 June 2022
The first act is slow, boring and lifeless. I wanted to turn it off but decided against my better judgment and carried on.

It slightly picks up in the second act but the pace is still rather slow and nothing seems to make any sense. You're treated to some disturbing imagery of dead animals and annoying backing music before the film then descends into utterly incomprehensible garbage.

Just to be trendy, there is no proper ending either and none of what you've seen is explained or appears to have any logic.

What was the point of this film? Who is it for? What was the message? I guess somebody out there knows. A complete waste of my time - would not recommend.

Black Mirror lite vs murder mystery vs psychological thriller vs romance
4 January 2022
A genre confused affair that has a bit of everything. From romance, to future technology sci-fi, police drama and a murder mystery theme thowrn in, there's a lot of unpack in this 4 part miniseries. On top of this is a strong psychological and philosophical theme that attempts to ask the viewer questions throughout.

It looks polished, was nicely shot and most of the acting is on point - although one of the leads, played by Jessica Plummer, is a bit wooden at times and some of her dialogue/delivery is amateurish.

The biggest problem and let down, for me, was the incredibly slow pace - the terminology 'slow burner' is an understatement. It was quite tough to get through the whole thing but sparks of intrigue and isolated scenes of action were just about enough to keep me in. The unnecessary filler and extensive irrelevant scenes certainly sail close to the wind, so you may need some patience. I wouldn't blame somebody for giving up early. The finale is the only episode that had a quick and exciting pace in my opinion.

This is a modern BBC production so there is politicism unfortunately and a 'men bad/women good' agenda being pushed. One of the scenes, with a therapist, felt like an educational lecture to viewers rather than a vital piece of the plot

Despite the flaws. I will give this a 6/10 as it is unique and dares to differ from the usual formula seen in similar shows.

Love is in the air
29 December 2021
A mystery thriller that should have been billed as a romance with an edge. There's a pretty wild conspiracy murder plot going on, which often serves as secondary to the main storyline - which is the romantic escapades and relationship woes that all three of our police leads are involved in. There's not one, but two separate 'boy meets girl' love stories running in parallel to the crime, so evidently the case has to take a back seat. The police find it difficult to focus on the case, or talk about it for any length of time without reverting back to the major issue - relationships and love. The personal issues of our leads are so extreme that most of their time on the job is spent harping on about their personal lives, only discussing the case when remembering that they have a job to do. What could have been a fast paced and decent thriller, in half the time, was padded out with too many subplots and filler, to the point that the writers were obviously going for the full 'soap opera' approach, rather than one of a dark thriller. Sprinkled with plenty of comedy and very annoying characters, the show feels muddled, confused and drawn out. You also have to suspend your disbelief at times as some of this is very far fetched, to say the least - despite being wrapped up in love and personal issues, the police leads are able to come up with solutions like magic and surpass all barriers with ease. In an odds defying manner, their 'lucky guess' approach works tremendously for them with striking accuracy. The notion of 'taking a punt' is stretched to the limit.

The positives - the good bits are good, the acting is fine, the murder mystery is a multi-layered and complex affair and quite different to the type of thing you usually see in British police shows. It held my interest enough to see it through until the end and some of the themes definitely provide some food for thought, long after the credits have rolled.

The ending was 'satisfactory' in terms of providing closure and wrapping up the story but there were still many questions left unanswered and the final act of the last episode felt rushed through. Pacing issues were rife throughout this whole series.

Despite all the criticism, this is worth a watch for the parts of the show that actually work. I've seen a lot worse. The review is just to make it known, prior to viewing, that love stories and the personal lives of the police are absolutely dominant in this series - it's a shame that the writers/producers didn't have the courage, confidence or desire to stick to what was supposed to be the primary plot. In my opinion, the show would have been much better without the filler and subplots - we didn't 'know' the characters well enough to care about their love lives. A generous 6/10.

A wasted opportunity that seems pointless.
23 December 2021
The bar was set high and many fans of the original trilogy were hyped up for this - as suspected, this long awaited sequel didn't deliver the goods.

This movie was such a missed opportunity - they had a chance to reestablish/revitalise the story and explore depths and content that was uncharted in the previous films. They decided not to do this.

The biggest problem I had is that the plot was dull and lifeless. 18 years to follow up with a story like this? Why? The narrative was so pointless and boring that I was barely interested in the final act and was clock watching to see how much was left to endure. The most interesting scene was the final one, which leaves the door open for more but I'm not going to hold my breath and wait another 5 years or so for another lacklustre attempt.

Characterwise, not enough familiar faces returned for this. I couldn't accept Agent Smith being played by a different actor, nor the absence of Lawrence Fishborne as Morpheus. The Merovingian character was unrecognisable and his return was underwhelming. Worst of all, I couldn't accept the constant comedy attempts at humorous one liners. This is The Matrix - a once serious franchise, not a comedy. Whoever decided that this movie needed constant 'laugh out loud' one liner pops in the script is a moron.

Keanu Reeves - we've grown to love his laid back approach to acting but not in this movie. His performance was lifeless, wooden and he had very little to do or work with.

If the plan is to make another two movies, then this reboot is nothing more than an entry level transitional film to re-establish the story. Nothing major really happens and unfortunately, the entire vibe and energy that made the trilogy a classic is gone. If you're looking for philosophical content you'll be disappointed. This is a lightly serious, yet comedic action movie, where the action scenes are neither exciting or necessary. It just felt like they were going through the motions.

Was there anything good? Hardly - some of the meta material was interesting at a push. Visually it looked ok but didn't capture the vibe of the original films.

To summarise, I struggle to really praise anything. I'm not angry, just disappointed. 5/10.

Showtrial (2021–2024)

Very engaging - solid entertainment
28 November 2021
Another British crime drama - as we know, these sorts of shows are a dime a dozen across U. K television, from the good, the bad to the ugly. For me, this was definitely in the 'good' bracket and sits on the higher end in terms of quality - it had me invested and engaged throughout.

To garner my attention, there has to be good characters, good writing, good shots and eye-catching scenery - this show ticked all the boxes. The main character (one of the accused) played by Celine Buckens was absolutely fascinating in her role - portraying the full spectrum of traits from nasty, to annoying, to funny, to vulnerable, to frail. She definitely takes you on a journey as a viewer. The main lawyer, played by Tracy Ifeachor, was also good in her role too and was very convincing.

As this is a BBC production that was made in 2021, I was expecting to have lots of political cringe moments thrown in but this show is 'mostly' free of them - I say mostly, as there are tiny bits now and again but it's marginal and definitely not overbearing. The other thing I liked, which I was quite surprised about, is that there wasn't a romantic subplot. Time and time again, most shows, of all genres, seem to 'have to' include the cheesy love plot angle amongst the drama for balance - not in this show. Very refreshing to see a crime drama that is brave enough to just stick to the topic at hand, which was the crime and case, without having to veer off into other directions.

My only criticism is that maybe some of what happens could be deemed a bit far fetched, in terms of the way a case is built and run - some of the court scenes seemed a bit dramatised for effect but it didn't bother me at all. This was entertainment and I wasn't looking to pick it apart in that manner (although I'm sure others might).

The ending for me was satisfactory, with the result I wanted and I had no regrets about investing the time to get there - which is why this gets a high (and generous) score of an 8/10 from me.

The Tower (2021–2023)
4/10
Ends on a whimper
24 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
What a disappointing mini-series.

It started off very generic - a typical British police crime drama, with all the usual ingredients: dead bodies, a mystery and a police lead trying to solve the case. It picked up mid-series (episode two) and left me wanting to see the obvious liars within the force held to account and exposed.

Major spoiler alert - in one of the worst and most frustrating endings I've ever seen, they all get away with it. The evidence remains hidden, the bent coppers manage to cover their tracks through lies (all supported by each other at every rank) - they also try to justify their behaviour and the writers obviously want you, the viewer, to have your own beliefs and morals challenged and possibly sympathise with them too. The ending stinks - it wasn't satisfying, it didn't provide the closure expected or needed - you never actually find out what really happened on that tower (only a liars version) and never will, as this was a standalone mini-series. A waste of time. 4/10.

A mixed bag - didn't meet expectations
21 November 2021
This film should have been good and I really wanted to like it. The positives - it looks absolutely great visually and showcases some high quality film making. Good shots, nice effects and mostly decent acting. In terms of British horror, there really isn't that much on offer elsewhere, outside of the very low budget, so this was refreshing to see. That's where the positives end for me.

Now for the negatives - the plot just didn't do it for me unfortunately. It actually became nonsensical, even for me, who often enjoys the 'far out' type of sci-fi/psychological stuff. The genre of this film seemed confused too - it starts out like a family friendly film, then becomes a teen drama, goes a bit sci-fi/fantasy and then descends into horror and gore. It seemed a bit all over the place and was quite the experience - the soundtrack and constant 60's music started to do my head in as time went on. The lead character wasn't doing it for me either - her accent and voice was very meek and watching somebody portray a character with zero confidence or social skills was rather tiresome. After enduring an hour of this and still realising there was another hour to go, I had to take a break and almost didn't come back, which is never a good sign - however, I was intrigued to know where this was all going and needed to see the end.

I made it through and the finale/pay off was disappointing and just seemed silly - yep, there's a big twist but it's not really satisfying and just adds to the nonsensical nature of the film.

Lastly (without giving away spoilers) there's no way, if this were reality, that the lead character wouldn't have been sectioned under the mental health act for her behavior and the things she did throughout this ordeal. I'll leave it there.

A very generous 6/10 and I'm only giving the just above average score due to the massive effort that obviously went into writing, filming and producing this movie - it looked very polished and visually pleasing, with a lot of attention to detail. There's also not much out there, in the British film market, to compare this with so I'll also give credit for the uniqueness and effort to bring something a bit different to the table. I'd in no way discourage anyone from watching this as you might love it (like others in the reviews did). It just wasn't for me unfortunately.

Locke & Key (2020–2022)
7/10
Enjoyed both seasons
8 November 2021
Season one started ok for me and then got better - as an adult, I did have a slight problem with the fact that there are teenage leads initially (especially the high school stuff) but overall it does have the kind of broad appeal vibe that can appeal to all ages, so I carried on. Glad I did, as the sci-fi fantasy elements, with what all the keys can do, are the kind of thing I love to see - mind manipulation, walking around in your own brain, ghosts, etc..I'm a sucker for it. The lead villain was good too and has a real presence. The finale was decent and I vowed to make sure I tuned in for season two.

Season two - for me, this was a much better season than the first, as it felt more mature. Still the same teenage leads but far more time is given to the adult cast members and there are far less cliche high school moments. The keys and special powers get far more screen time in this season, transitioning in to proper sci-fi/fantasy at almost all times. Shapeshifting/possession is always entertaining and fun to watch. They introduced other classic sci-fi themes too and this series was much darker, at times, than what came before. I've seen other reviewers complain about 'plot holes' but they failed to list what exactly they're referring to. As somebody who likes to pick holes in the plot, I felt this season stood up well and that they clearly made a huge effort with continuity and consistency. I've watched a lot of sci-fi and have seen all the top films and shows in the genre, yet I actually thought the writing was solid, so there we go - opinions can be a million miles apart.

Solid 7/10 from me. As always, don't let the reviews on here put you off from watching - I'd say check it out and see what you think.

Good film
13 April 2021
The reviews here seem very odd and a couple look like they've been written by the same person, so I'll add some perspective.

Well acted by the lead - dark and suspenseful. I wouldn't even call this a 'slow burn' actually because all horror films need to set the scene initially and that's what this film did - the pace seemed usual.

By the halfway mark it had become quite creepy, with lots of jump scares and twisted events. The ending delivers too - it's quite clever and unexpected. On the whole, it was well written, well produced and looked great visually.

Ignore the negative reviews on here and make up your own mind - IMDB seems to be a dumping ground for negative review brigading these days and for small indpendent films like this, it can seriously skew the perspective. If you're looking for a good British horror, then it's worth a watch in my opinion.

Fresh sci-fi crime/drama
1 January 2021
I thoroughly enjoyed this one. After a slow burn start, within the first episode, it really starts to unfold afterwards and becomes a multi-layered and compllicated affair - by the end, you're given all the answers you need, instead of being left to use your own imagination. The writing was solid.

Visually it looked great - it's not often that an American production opts for a fully British cast in London, so this is quite unique. It definitely has the polished glossy look, that Americans are more used to seeing and looks higher quality than what Brits are used to seeing in U.K productions.

The casting was good - the lead was an interesting choice and I found her meekness and confusion endearing. The supporting cast were all excellent too, with some familiar faces from British television. The Gestalt quadruplets were impressive and I've never seen this theme explored before.

The story became 'edge of seat' by the last few episodes and I had to block watch. I was sad to know that they wouldn't be exploring this show any further after the first series. Why not is beyond me - you could easily get a few good seasons out of this.

I had no knowledge of the book and most negative reviews seem to be based on the story changing from what they read in the novel. The cast opts for the 30 - 50 age group, which possibly alienates that teenage market that these sort of shows usually try to appeal to.

I'd reccommend this for fans of Sci-fi, mystery, crime and British television.

Spolied by the ending - loose ties & pointless subplots
11 July 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This could have been a masterpiece - there was so much going on through the series and lots of interesting characters to follow. Although quite scattered it felt like all of this would be tied up in the end and somehow connected. Unfortunately by the time it ends, you realise that some of the subplots were pointless, or built up to amount to nothing and there was an unsatisfying feeling that true closure had not been achieved.

They teased some horror elements with the decapitation of an animal, a creepy man in the words and some mysterious drugs, resulting in the attack of a young man who was left in a coma. This amounted to absolutely nothing in the end - it was heavily featured throughout most of the series and then forgot about. The writers remembered that they needed to provide some closure. The result? The boy in the coma fell over after being chased. Wow - all that build up for nothing huh.

The missing wife - it was hinted that she was in some kind of dangerous cult or involved in something mysterious. The whole fake pregenecy thing was never really explained. Countless hours of suspense, just to let us know she was murdered by a neighbour over a dispute. Some much investment, so little reward.

What about the young girl who was being poisoned by her mother? There was no outcome to this at all. The dad went for revenge but was arrested and then nothing happens. What happened to her, or her evil mother? She was also involved in the subplot regarding thefake 'revenge porn' set up - she admitted to it but this was never closed down either. No reaction from the victim, no consequences. Infact the teenagers were heavily involved in the season all the way though, until the finale, where they featured for like one scene. This is when I realised some seriously poor writing had accured.

There's more plot holes but I'd be here all day.

It was an enjoyable watch because you were always led to believe that explosive outcomes were close - the disappointment comes as the credits roll and you realise you've been led up the garden path. If the writer can learn from this, their next show could be better.

Half baked - misses the mark
15 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The opening scene, with the narration, was strong and it appeared that this was going to be a good movie - yet from the first encounter with the hypnotherpaist (who was annoyingly smug and unlikable) the whole thing starts to unravel and steadily goes down hill. What could have been a great concept swiftly falls apart and becomes a muddled mess of silly twists and turns with nobody likable to root for.

The french villain was annoying and obnoxious and his sidekicks were just there for filler, with minimal lines and no back stories. The hypnotherapist, who was clearly supposed to be some sort of alluring and sexual goddess, was just plain wooden and forgetable (along with annoyining, which I've already mentioned). That just leaves us with the lead, who you can't really connect with or suss out and as a viewer, I certainly was interested or engaged with the love triangle that dominated the second and third act of the film.

The whole production reeked of that 'I'm so trendy and clever' vibe that is comparable to some of Guy Ritchies crimes films - it tried a bit too hard to dazzle and impress with the supposedly clever plot, which in the end became a steaming pile of nonsense that was too far fetched and unlikely to actually take seriously.

On a more positive note, the film was pleasing on the eye, from a visual aspect and so it should be as the film apparently had a 20 million dollar budget. The sound track was also good.

This gets a moderate halfway mark of 5/10 for effort as it's no way near the bottom teir of crap that one could find to watch yet is nowhere near the top either.

A hidden gem
10 February 2020
I'm glad I stumbled across this largely unknowm show that has already been long forgotten - another addition to the 'one season wonder' club, where it's orginiality and complexity failed to build a worthy enough television audience to justify another run. Quite the shame and I suspect that if this had come out a few years later, on Netflix or Amaxon Prime, we'd be seeing more.

This is a joint production between BBC America and BBC UK (with an all american cast) and you can tell from the first few episodes that this is very different to most other commericialised efforts - there's no fluffy nonsense, no corny attempts at Holywood humour, nor is there any attempt to try and appeal/pander to the mainstream casual youth viewer. This is a serious affair, with a dark and mysterious vibe, that really gets going mid season (there's only 8 episodes).

Some of the acting is first class and the main characters continue to grow on you throughout - everybody plays their part well. The story is clever, creepy and very well written.

The genre is a mixture of a supernatural thriller and a mystery drama, that is laced with sci-fi elements and for those that are a fan of action/horror - there's lots of fights, murders and a tiny bit of gore. Whilst one of the main stroylines features a man and problematic changes within his wife, cheesy romance is defintely not on the menu.

The tension and intrgue builds throughout the show and the ending is complete, as the finale ties up the season nicely - it doesnn't end on an absolute cliff hanger but does of course leave it open for more.

If you have a spare 6 hours on a lazy sunday afternoon/evening, I'd recommend binge watching the whole thing in one, like a super long movie, as this doesn't appear to be the kind of thing you can casually dip in and out of. To fully experience and absorb the tale, I'd go for all in one.

A solid 8 out of 10 for originality and effort.

Slow burner - falls short
1 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
As a fan of the genre, I'm starting to believe that I've probably seen the majority of time travel/time loop movies that are worth watching. I stumbled across this one from an IMDB list and observed the mixed reviews but decided to give it a go and make up my own mind.

The first 30 minutes were utterly boring and I was close to switching off, but brief moments of potentially interesting activity just about kept me in. There's lots of long and dragged out 'dialogue free' scenes of the lead gormlessly walking about, which fail to build any sort of tension - this kind of thing only works in a film that is actually good. I also wondered if one of the crew had some kind of 'foot fetish' as there seems to be lots of unneccesary focus and shots on the leads bare feet, over and over again. Weird.

Once you're passed the halfway mark there's some mild plot advancements and just about enough suspense to spark ones interest, but there's no denying that the whole thing is just rather flat and mundane. The lack of budget and poor script shows as no actual time travel with the character you are following occurs, nor is there any significant insight in to her 'future self'. We follow the same character, on the same timline and nothing else from the 'other side' is fully explored - just infrequent reminders that some sort of time travel has accured in the background..

The ending is just as flat as the rest of the film and although I didn't find the plot overly complex or hard to fiollow (due to the amount of these type of films I've seen) I cetainly couldn't be bothered to give it any after thought or even try and figure out anything that I might have missed.

A low impact, mediocre film that falls short. Just about worth a watch for time travel fanatics but will leave many underwhlemed. The five stars is generous, only based on the fact that there's a lot worse out there.

Dead Cert (2010)

Better than twilight
22 March 2013
Another British independent film, with another shockingly low score on IMDb...I'm not sure who the people are rating these, but films in the '2-3 star' region would suggest that they are so bad, and painful, that you wonder how they were even financed and made - Scores this low would suggest that a film is trash, through and through, with no redeeming features. This piece of work, whilst not academy award worthy by any means, is certainly not 'trash' - in fact, it's quite entertaining and well made.

Lets look at the facts -

The actors have presence, and did a great job - lots of familiar faces for us Brits, such as Billy Murray, Craig Fairbrass, etc.. who have featured heavily in U.K television, and film. The soundtrack was cool, and whilst the special effects were not ground breaking, they were certainly good enough. It looks pleasant on the eye, and is quite cinematic in places.

The vampire clichés are not original, but I honestly haven't seen a British gangster/vampire flick before, so that was kind of refreshing, as I'm a fan of both.

There was lots of violence, lots of gore, and lots of blood, if you're into that sort of thing. Corny love scenes are not present.

I found the pace to be fine, as the film is split into two halves, with the first half playing out like a regular gangster/crime movie, and the second half focusing on the vampire element. It worked fine.

I'd pick this film over twilight any day of the week, and that's a compliment, considering one had a multi-million dollar budget, and this had a fraction of that...

The negatives? The voice effects of the vampires were quite lame, and some of the female actors were a bit average at best.

I've seen much better films, but also seen much much worse.

3.5? Ridiculous.

6/10 in my opinion.

2.5?? I don't think so...
28 February 2013
It's clear that not many people have rated this film, but if you've come here to check it's score first before viewing, then don't be put off by the grade on here - as after watching this film, it doesn't seem right at all, and I'm glad I decided to ignore it.

Far from a classic, but entertaining all the same, this British drama, is the tale of a professional footballer on the way up, who gets sidelined with an injury, and immediately dropped from his team. With no income, he must find a way to bring some money in, as he has a child on the way, and a loving partner to support. Mishaps occur, as desperate measures lead to desperate things, and our lead will find himself caught up in the wrong crowd, as everything he stands for will now be put to test, along with his morals, well being, and safety.

The acting seems very natural, in the sense that the people act how you'd expect people in daily life to act - not at all over the top, and this does well in making the people seem 'real'.

The visual quality is up to scratch, and some nice shots are used.

My only complaint is there are a few clichés in the plot that may make you sigh, but if you can forgive them, and you're fan of British film, you may enjoy it for what it is.

Certainly not the best film I've ever seen, but nowhere near the worst, but definitely worth a look on a quiet night.

If you're a fan of the genre, ignore the negative reviews
27 February 2013
It took me a while to finally watch this, as I foolishly judged the film by it's IDMB rating (a habit I need to squash, as they've been highly inaccurate in the last year or so).

This film is exactly what you'd expect from the 'British gangster movie' club - The usual suspects, playing their usual parts, with a mix of action, violence, and tough men in nice suits, embroiled in turf wars with foreign mobsters, caught up in the standard situations that you've seen in these kind of films before.

If you're a fan of the genre, and British crime pieces, then I doubt you'll be disappointed, as the acting is up to scratch, it looks polished, and it is leagues ahead of many other cheap efforts from unknown British directors. Frank Harper has been in enough films over the years, some high budget, and others low, that's it not surprising that he is now venturing into the production and directing aspect of the business.

The pace of the film was fine, the characters were easy to accept and follow, there was a fair bit of drama, and it definitely wasn't as 'vulgar' as some are making out, as I've seen far worse, in regards to the over use of swearing, and unnecessary violence.

This is no 'Goodfellas' or 'The Godfather' but who would be expecting that kind of level from this film anyway?

It does what it said on the tin - Solid film, and good casual viewing.

I wrote this review to put some perspective on here, as the 4.5 rating is completely off the mark, and due to the low amount of submissions, it's probably some kind of 'politics'.

Final thought - IMDb ratings are not always justified, and one should probably make up their own mind, rather than rely on them, like I've done in the past. You'll miss out on good films if you do.

Harry Brown (2009)

Good watch, but nothing special
9 January 2010
Reviews have been good, the critics were impressed, and the advertising would have you believe that this movie is more than 'epic' and way beyond your average British crime flick.

The opening scenes set up the premise - Scumbags on an estate who are a drain on society - After this, prepare to be bored for the next 20 minutes or so - unless long drawn out, dialogue free, scenes of one man walking around, washing dishes, and looking lonely, get your heart racing. Whilst some further insight into the minds of the reckless youths on the estate would have been interesting, and possibly vital, the viewer is denied this, and all focus is on, the often silent, Harry.

Although a few key things do happen, the first half of the movie is incredibly slow, and even though you can feel that something 'big' will happen, eventually, the viewer may become frustrated at the pace, and the extended scenes, and may even want to hit fast forward on the remote.

This movie is big on build ups, anticipation, and the odd bit of suspense - Until the final act, the action is few and far between, and the viewer is only allowed an insight into the mind of a select few characters - The rest are just 'there'.

Although you feel you may be in for a treat, you can feel that the plot will be predictable, and be almost sure that you're not going to see anything you haven't seen before - The concept, in various formations, has been done to death.

Now for the good stuff....

The villains play their parts well - You despise them, and want to see their demise immediately.

Harry is your classic 'hero' - You will root for him all the way, and even though his actions may be questionable, you feel the urge to cheer his every move.

The acting was not too hammy at all actually, and I think everybody involved did a good job of portraying realistic characters - 'Emily Mortimer' as Detective Inspector Frampton, and the pretty much unknown 'Ben Drew' playing the vile Noel Winters, did extremely in their supporting roles.

The real action, and best bits of the film, as expected, are in the final scenes - After all the build ups, and anticipation, the final scenes do not disappoint. The action is first class, adrenaline will be pumping, and you may find yourself shouting at your screen.

Overall, not a bad film at all - It's quite good.

Does it deserve all the praise and hype? - Probably not.

Is this the best British cinema has to offer? - This year, maybe, but a big no overall.

If you're a fan of the genre, and British film, give it a go.

I'll give this 6.5/10

Adventureland (2009)

Adventureland was worth the wait
8 August 2009
After months of waiting for a copy, I finally got to see the movie last night, and I must say - It was worth the wait.

Adventureland is a rare type of comedy, for our day and age, in regards to the fact the humour is subtle, and the drama is powerful. Rather than relying on slapstick comedy and toilet humour, Adventureland chooses to focus on its characters with depth, and the superb writing, and direction, ensures that the movie will have you smiling consistently through out.

Some are saying that this movie is not a comedy, and I disagree. The film is very funny in places, with Jesse Eisenberg playing a terrific lead, backed up with subtle comedy gems by Martin Starr, Bill Hader and Kristen Wigg. Kristen Stewert was overly impressive as the female lead, and it was refreshing to see Ryan Reynolds in a non-generic, and non-clichéd, role. The supporting characters were also great, with Margarita Levieva as Lisa P standing out.

With a near 2 hour running time, packed with drama, lust, and some laughs, Adventureland is no 80 minute slapstick fest, and this might be hard to endure for the average laugh out loud type of comedy fan.

You could watch this film with your friends, you could watch this film with your partner, and you could even watch this film with your parents - Adventureland is a great all rounder.

One of the better comedies of the last decade, and yet another gem to come out of the, ever growing, Apatow clique.

A solid 8/10 from me.

Garden Party (2008)
6/10
Original, unique and enjoyable
25 May 2009
Warning: Spoilers
Firstly, If you enjoy generic, safe, and predictable movies, like the ones 'Hollywood' often churn out, then you might not enjoy, or appreciate, this gutsy offering....

As we all know, independent movies are rather 'hit and miss', usually because they push the boundaries, regarding the industry standard rules, when it comes to the directing, production and writing.

When an independent movie gets it right, it can be overly refreshing and satisfying.

The first risk that 'Garden Party' takes, is that it refuses to give the viewers a recognisable lead character to follow. Instead, the first segment of the movie sets up the premise for several diverse characters, separately, each with their own story and subplot. This is dangerous, for any movie, as trying to follow multiple amounts of plots at once can easily become annoying, and result in an overload, causing the viewer to switch off in frustration. Luckily, in this particular case, it works, and the stories, and characters, quickly begin to intertwine and link with each other.

We are introduced to a homeless, pretty boy, up and coming pop/rock singer, who remains placid and confused, as his ultra rise to stardom begins out of nowhere, and he starts to attract attention from promoters, beautiful women, and artists. We then have a young, attractive girl, from a questionable upbringing, who is encouraged by some friends, to get into the soft core porn industry. A young man, who has forgotten who he is, due to being on 24 hour duty to his control freak boss, in real estate, and drug pushing. A ruthless, sexy, and manipulative business women, who does anything to get what she wants, with a soft spot for losers, who she can mould and control. Other characters include an obsessive rich pervert, a seedy photographer, and a pot head who with no ambition.

The movie runs along, at a fairly fast pace, and you suddenly begin to care about each character and their individual story. Whether it be in a good, or bad way, you are waiting for closure on each characters subplot, which eventually kind of combines into one big plot.

Sex, and taboos, play a big part in the movie, but somehow, and strangely, the movie manages to be quite tasteful, and although sex, drugs, booze and porn are frequently mentioned, it manages to be non offensive, with no real smut element. Its realistic.

With a mixture of comedy, drama, and passion, this one should keep you entertained throughout.

I like this movie because it has the guts to be a bit different. Exploring scenarios that most movies wouldn't touch, and generally going with the flow. This adds excitement, and an unpredictable element for the viewer.

Great acting, interesting soundtrack, good writing, and good directing.

I would recommend this film to anybody with an open mind - 8/10
