Atonement (2007)
charged, unexpected and moving
Joe Wright brings us a story about love, about war and struggle.
By telling us the story distorted (time- and perspective-wise) he charges every scene with possibilities and to a degree lets them stand on their own. But the Story develops staidly while also filling in the created gaps. But don't worry, there are a few unexpected twists and turns in store. While I would have loved to see more of the relationship between Robbie and Cecilia, I have to admit that this is not the focus of this story as the title suggests.
As far as performances go, everybody delivers in a way to not steal the limelight but create a great balance. You will be hard pressed not to feel for the the 3 main characters and be moved by their struggle with themselves and this cruel mistress we call "fate".
If you are not on a first date i feel it is my obligation to recommend this movie.
The Departed (2006)
Amazing Movie
Martin Scorsese is put on this earth to make such movies.
The casting and acting in general is "something". From Jack Nicholson, playing his amazing self, to Matt Damon, I'm always in control, just ... perfect. Trust me this deserves his own point, Leonardo DiCaprio. I'm not gay but I've got a man crush on him. You couldn't avert your eyes from his performance, even if you tried. As far as directing is concerned, while this is not the best movie Scorsese ever maid, for me the honor belongs to Goodfellas, it is a really close call. Why then only 7 out of 10 stars. This movie is a remake out of Infernal Affairs. In its own right an amazing movie even with the cultural barrier, being an foreign movie. But with the talent involved it is a little bit sad to only create a new version instead of something original. That being said, this movie will grab your attention and never let go for 2,5 hours. Quite the accomplishment given the usual average movie length. I recommend this movie to not only the thriller genre fans, but to everybody who is not afraid of violence in movies. You will be glued to your seat.
Chasing Life (2014)
The Fault in Our Stars as a TV Series
I want to mention that I have only watched 10 episodes so far and the review is based on that. Chasing Life, as the Titel states, is centered around the concept of "how precious life is" more so than than "how irreversible death is". As far as I'm concerned the concept of this series generally works. Italia Ricci does a great job and makes the show work. The "side stories" and secondary characters have, for me, been a little underwhelming. Not because they where badly cast or don't know how to act, but in my opinion because they are not really flushed out in a way to make them appealing or likable, which i attribute to the writing.
The correlation between the movie and this TV series for me is hard to overlook. But a movie captures your attention for roughly 2 hours. This show needs you to make the decision to tune in every week to see how the story progresses. And here is my issue. there are generally only 2 ways that this can play out with the main story arc. Italia Ricci is either going to die or she is going to miraculously recover. To me neither are really appealing. Don't get me wrong, we are going to yo-yo all over the place but in the more general sense, if she dies you get to witness a lot of pain and tears. If she lives, the series which is centered around an illness would lose the main ingredient. Be that as it may, she will get worse and by tuning in you get to watch her get generally worse every week, you get to watch a character you like die. I'm not quite sure what to do next week, not because the show isn't good, but because "how irreversible death is" and we are in a downward spiral with no ground in sight...
Rectify (2013)
all about emotion
This series, as i perceive it, is build on the moment and emotion. The characters are great (well written and acted) and the scenes full of life, except there is not that much happening in (with) them. We gain access into the minds and thoughts and there are all the little good details. But because of the continuation of the "crawling" tempo the first season in my opinion was the best.
So after the second season i did not become disappointed but bored. But changing the tempo doesn't make sense either. I think that this make most sense for me(!) as a movie or planed series with x episodes, not as an open series for as long as the ratings are right, up to a rushed ending when they plummet.
This series has a niche and is really good but it lost me along the way.... sorry for my English, second language
