Dog Star Man (1964)
One of the purest forms of cinema
I really only write this review here instead of making a filmed review as I saw someone here say that film has story, characters, and a few other bits and pieces that I would argue are more in tune with literature and theater than film. Brakhage is one of the purest artist in cinema, if not the purest, containing few elements of the other art forms that film is so often confused for as possible. An amazing journey in perception.
The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014)
Such a delightful film.
My time spent reviewing the film here will be brief as it would be pointless to describe how much I love this film here. Great cinematography, score, acting, and of course directing. The mood is such a warm and friendly place to be, fitting that it should be named after a grand hotel. Love the use of aspect ratio. Every character is utilized to perfection and never overstays their welcome, leaving you completely satisfied in their conclusion. A great film.
Les yeux sans visage (1960)
An alright psychological horror.
After all the hype surrounding this film, I am kind of disappointed. This is not a bad film, but it feels like more effort could have been put into little details that would have elevated the film. The prosthetics, which should be the selling point of the film, were never entirely convincing except in the photograph sequence, which was a highlight. Spoilers: (They show the ruined face out of focus because you know they could not pull it off well. When the first girl's face is removed it just looked like they smeared blood on her actual face. When she's wearing the bandages, you can see skin where it showed they had removed it. Things like that really bothered me, and most would be easy to fix or film in a more convincing way.) The characters could have been fleshed out more, mainly the father and secretary. I liked how the girl was left to be more mysterious. I enjoyed the film, but it has major flaws.
Stalker (1979)
Hard to put your finger on.
It's hard to describe what makes Tarkovsky work as well as he does. The tunnel sequence had my heart pummeling away in my chest, despite nothing immediately terrifying happening onscreen. This film just gets to you, and it does so through a slow build that pulls you in inch by inch like Writer is pulled into the tube. More subtle and obtuse than even Solaris, which I would recommend as an introduction to the director before seeing this film. Can't wait to see even more from this director in the future.
Hacksaw Ridge (2016)
Almost a so bad it's good.
Not much to say. Poor dialogue and poor directing lead to a cheesy final product that is unbearable in its first act but tolerable in the third act. Weird casting and glossy cinematography make this one an unfortunately funny watch for what should be an emotional film.
My Friend Dahmer (2017)
A film that defines boring. (Spoilers if you don't know Dahmer)
This film may have been a decent thriller (mediocre at best with its conventional indie 70s period piece style) but it relies on one aspect of Dahmer's character to sell the film. This film's major theme is Dahmer's transformation into the psychopath we know due to his treatment by his friends as a class clown. This is untrue even within the film as he is already torturing animals at the beginning or at least dissecting them. It's either that or the film just wants you to look at how weird it is that a future serial killer is going to high school. "Did you know Jeffrey Dahmer went to prom?" It's empty and hollow and may have been something with better directing or a more complicated look at Dahmer who is shown here as your typical outcast. The drug dealer is portrayed as being more dangerous than Dahmer who reacts with a frightened expression to a gun going off despite wanting to kill several people in the film. The most interesting thing was them meeting the Vice President for like five seconds. If this film went into people who are obsessed with Dahmer after what he did and people who are into murderabilia that may have been something. But Alex Wolff in this film is not a character. There is nothing I can think of to say positively of the film. Visually it is as boring as it's story with competent lighting and competent shot composition but that just leads to a more boring product rather than something so bad it's good. I would rather watch Catwoman.
