Shaun of the Dead (2004)
Awesome zombie horror-comedy
Shawn of the dead is a great spoof of the zombie genre which is funny and a breeze to sit through. Perhaps the best way to describe the film's comedy is to call it "British humor." Don't expect a gag-a-minute affair like Scary Movie, or a TV sit-com approach. Shaun of the Dead's niche is much closer to the one occupied by Evil Dead 2 (and its sequel, Army of Darkness) and Tremors. Those movies understood what makes a good horror movie, then had some fun with the premise, neither taking it too seriously nor utilizing contempt in its ridicule. Shaun of the Dead is a movie that one might not expect to work at first glance, but, for those who don't mind a little laughter with their zombies (or perhaps it should be the other way around), this is an unusual source of entertainment. If you are in the mood for some zombie action, I suggest you watch Dawn of the Dead and Shaun of the dead in succession. This is great entertainment.
Charlie's Angels (2000)
This Charlie's Angels kicks ass
Charlie's Angels has been shown on cable for so long I think most people can remember dialogues by now. This smooth film features the stunning trio of Drew Barrymore, Lucy Lui and Cameron Diaz with Bill Murray and a young Sam Rockwell and is based on the famous TV series of the same name from the 70s. This film simultaneously pays homage to and makes fun of the television show. It is designed camp - a movie that openly acknowledges its dubious appeal and revels in it. The action sequences are well choreographed and there is something funny right around the corner after a fight ends. Charlie's Angels is far too light to promote any sort of serious or introspective discussion - and rightfully so (feminists keep off). Anything else would have been a disappointment and a waste. The movie is exactly what it needs to be to succeed: trashy, dumb, and flashy - in short, one of the guiltiest pleasures to reach multiplexes this year.
Chimera Strain (2018)
One of the most refreshing films in recent years
Maurice Haems's Chimera Strain is on of the better low budget sci-fi indies released in recent memory. The plot is good, although incomprehensible at times, the pacing is excellent and the acting and cinematography belie the fact that this is made on such a miniscule budget. Go for it.
Groundhog Day (1993)
Great comedy-philosophical drama
Groundhog day may seem tame by today's standards- but remember this was the film that started the whole time relapse continuum in the first place. However, just a concept cannot carry a film and this is where Groundhog succeeded and many others failed- It had a heart and a good story. Bill murray plays a weather reporter who must relive the same day- groundhog day every day. Featuring great performances from Murray and Mcdonald, and fantastic direction from Harold Ramis Groundhog Day is a movie that will still be watched a hundred years from now.
Legend (1985)
Amazing visuals as expected from Scott
There is a lot to write about Legend. Legend was Ridley Scott's follow up to his most personal film Blade Runner. And it was the start of his "average" phase. Legend is a decent film- it looks astonishing Ill give it that. But the story is basic and Tom Cruise is simply adequate. Tim Curry as the bad guy actually completely steals the show but overall this is just an okay film filled with pretty visuals. If you want to watch a fantasy there are other better films. Unless you're a fan of Ridley Scott or Tom Cruise I think you can safely avoid this.
Top Gun (1986)
Awesome Tom Cruise action film
Top Gun put Tom Cruise on the map to superstardom and he hasn't looked back ever since. But this is a great action film which came at just about the perfect time- America under Reagan was aching for patriotic films and Tony Scott's fighter jet excursion was just the right film to make them feel even more patriotic. The action sequences are insane and just the novelty of seeing jets in combat in a movie theater would have been amazing so I can see why this film was so popular. Ably supported by stars such as Anthony Edwards, Tim Robbins and Val Kilmer Tom Cruise leads this film to the skies.
Lord of War (2005)
If you love crime movies this one is unmissable
Lord of War is a great movie. Everything from the stunning opening credit sequence which features the journey of a bullet to the proceedings till the credits roll is a joy to behold. It also proves that under the right supervision Nicholas Cage is an actor you cannot take your eyes off from. Lord of War is a crime drama war film with great set pieces and a heart in the right place. Go watch it.
Short Cuts (1993)
A Robert Altman work that needs to be seen
Robert Altman was a master director and it is great that with the advent of the internet the new generation can know and watch films of his that they would never have gotten an opportunity otherwise. Short cuts, much like most of his films is an ensemble piece featuring top notch actors playing distinct characters in the city of Los Angeles. All are connected- some literally, all thematically. This is a great piece by a master and it inspired many filmmakers, among others PT Anderson. Go watch it now.
Rescue Dawn (2006)
This isn't a war movie
This isn't like other war movies so don't expect a Saving Private Ryan or even a Band of Brothers like drama. Rescue Dawn is one of the few mainstream efforts by legendary German auteur Wernor Herzog and you can see why- This isn't a war movie rather a survival film and it takes us dep into the jungle where the main character (portrayed impeccably by Christian Bale) has to fight himself, his urges and nature. A scene of him devouring a raw snake can make you squirm. A good film that should be given a chance. (Herzog goes mainstream).
Forooshande (2016)
The themes are thought provoking and the story is absorbing
This distinguished film by esteemed filmmaker Asghar Farhadi is a must watch for lovers of world cinema. The themes are thought provoking and the story is absorbing. Featuring top notch performances The salesman should be on the top of foreign films you should see. (An Iranian masterpiece)
