The Last House Standing (2020)
Resilient construction, resilient people
As someone who works in film, but has a degree in Civil Engineering, this eye-opening documentary had me completely geeking out. It tells the story of the increasingly frequent and damaging storms brought on by climate change through the voices of the people most affected. Whether the disaster is fire, earthquake, tornado, or hurricane, this compelling doc not only shows you what the aftermath of these storms is like for survivors, but also how we can build better more resilient structures. The event may have only occurred over a day or week, but it takes months or even years to rebuild. This doc asks, "What if we didn't have to rebuild?"
Sensei Fran Kicks Ass (2020)
Sensei Fran does indeed kick ass
This delightful short doc is told as both a look back at Fran's globe-trotting career with the Foreign Service (when doing so was quite ground-breaking for a woman) and a peek at her current work as Sensei Fran. Fran has lived her life with dignity, humility, and openness to new adventures and cultures. The director's respect for Fran's journey is echoed in Fran's respect for all people. She is a true role model the world needs today.
Confounding Father: A Contrarian View of the U.S. Constitution (2020)
Another side to the constitution
Confounding Father tells the story of Luther Martin who opposed the constitution. It's a story I was completely unfamiliar with prior to watching this, and it was a fascinating journey into history of which I knew so little. It's told in easily digestible bites for anyone who wants a look into the other side of the constitutional debate.
Dodging Bullets (2015)
Informative and Emotional
Dodging Bullets is both incredibly informative and emotional. It clearly explains a rarely discussed topic in historical trauma, and does so through the Indigenous experience in what is now the United States. I could feel the weight of that trauma that the featured people carried with them, but I could also feel their strength in their determination to fight for better. As a White citizen, my first step is always to educate myself and listen. Dodging Bullets was an entertaining way for me to do so on an important topic.
A Woman's Work: The NFL's Cheerleader Problem (2019)
Moving portrait of the fight for equality
A Woman's Work is a beautifully crafted movie weaving the personal stories of a few NFL cheerleaders as they fight for their work place rights. It is clearly evident how much they treasure their jobs even as they grow increasingly frustrated by the lack of equity in the work place. These brave women are paving the way in the hopes that future generations will benefit. It is an incredibly moving portrait of a big issue.
