Babel (2006)
A political, emotionally charged venture
Babel is an anthology movie with three stories- one taking place in Japan, another in Morocco and the final one on the American/Mexican border. They are all rather poignant and hard hitting and the director makes us realize that most humans are a victim of circumstances rather than real villains. The cast is an eclectic mix of A listers, international stars and newcomers. This is a good film and worthy of your time though be wary- the subject is rather heavy and some scenes regarding the violence and nudity is extreme.
Gravity (2013)
(Outer space never seemed this threatening).
Gravity is for sci-fi lovers, it is for space lovers, it is for anyone who wants to be awed by the brutal nature of outer space. Amazingly shot by Mexican Alphonso Cuarran Gravity stars Sandra Bullock as an astronaut who suffers a problem in orbit and then must return back home any way possible. The cinematography and direction is amazing and the shots of the planet are humbling and scary at the same time. Of course, I know all this is CGI but it looks so real you'd be shocked. George Clooney also stars but he's barely in the film. Bullock is more than competent and carries the film though it is the visuals and the sequences of chaos that stay with you.
The Signalman (1976)
Worthy of a definite watch; something I shall do so again
This is a harrowing, incredibly atmospheric short film based on a story by Charles Dickens. The premise is basic: A signalman in a far flung mini junction is used to his ways until a stranger appears one day. This is a ghost story as well as a take on solitude, technology and the supernatural. What I recall about this short is the haunting look and feel of the location. The film stayed with me because it reminded me of vague concepts such as time, space and memories. This is a short film (barely 40 mins) and yet it perhaps even exceeds the literary source if you go by some online opinion.
What About Bob? (1991)
Great early 90s comedy starring 2 legends
This is a great comedy starring Richard Dreyfuss and Bill Murray. Murray plays a cook patient of Dreyfuss and the entire film is them going at each other. This is a great early 90s film- rather telling of its time. The film stock, the locations and clothing is dripping with nostalgia. Bill Murray is excellent and Dreyfuss more than holds his own. If you like comedies then this film will appeal to you. Great family entertainment.
The French Connection (1971)
Friedkin at the top of his game
This is a great crime thriller directed by the young William Friedkin for which he won an Oscar. This is a gritty film filled with fantastic performances throughout the spectrum- Gene Hackman is amazing as the tough no nonsense cop Doyle well assisted by Roy Schneider, still a few years removed from playing hark hunter Brody. Friedkin has great directing skills and the car chase sequence is already considered one of the finest ever put on film though I personally found it a bit overrated and not as good as the one in Friedkin's other film To Live and Die in LA. Regardless, you should check this film out if you like hard gritty films full of tough guys.
Senn (2013)
A must watch for all budding filmmakers.
A must watch for all budding filmmakers- this is a nano budget feature film which shows that you don't need a big budget multimillion dollar to create art.
The Imitation Game (2014)
Go if you like a well-made historical bio)
Great performances by Benedict Cumberbatch and Kiera Knightley in this historical drama bio on the scientist Alan Turing. Ably directed and the cinematography is also pretty good- this is a good watch. (Go if you like a well-made historical bio)
