Aliens (1986)
One of the best sequels in all of cinema
At the end of Alien Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) was found floating in a pod. Upon her rescue by Weyland Yutani(the corporation that screwed her and her fellow crew members in Alien) she is told that there is already a terraforming colony on LV214(the space jockey planet) but contact has been lost for some time. She involuntarily agrees to join the team to go have a look. What follows is a fight to death between a bunch of marines and the evil Xenomorphs. Aliens is different in style and tone to Alien and that's a great thing. One of the few sequels that work so well Aliens shows the importance of a visionary director of the caliber of Jim Cameron.
Before Sunrise (1995)
(Probably among the greatest romantic films ever made).
Richard Linklater is a talented filmmaker and Before Sunrise is his ode to romance using themes and techniques he would go on to use often in his films. It takes place in real time as we meet jessie and Celine played by Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy respectively. This is one of the most amazing chemistry in a major motion picture and kudos must go to the actors as much as the director. We follow these two all across Vienna and by the end of the film we totally relate to many things. Before Sunrise led to two great sequels which take place in real time and were shot in real time also(as in all the three films were filmed in a span of 18 years). This is art right here.
Conan the Barbarian (1982)
To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and hear the lamentation of their women!
John Milius's Conan the Barbarian is a gritty visceral epic which kickstarted the "swords and sandals" sub-genre in the early 80s. Arnold Schwarzenegger is in top form in a film that catapulted him into the stratosphere and a year later he would go onto star in the Terminator, cementing his arrival as leading man. Milius is such a good director and it seems war and moral codes are running through his veins. The cinematography is good as is the score and one scene in particular- the kitchen orgy sequence is awe inspiring in its outlandish transpiring. If you like historical epics, then Conan the Barbarian is a great film to wind down with.
Chinatown (1974)
A Polanski masterpiece
Chinatown is a slow moving film but it shouldn't deter you from seeing it. The screenplay by Robert Towne is considered the template for all screenplays and it is incredibly rich n everything a script should be. Polanski is a master so there's no point covering that bit and the way he executes each scene is amazing. Nicholson and Dunaway are awesome and make a great pair. The cinematography is amazing and Los Angeles 1930's never looked this good. This is a film that should be taught in film schools on how to make a great film.
L.A. Story (1991)
Go watch it to remember an early 90s Los Angeles, which isn't much different now
LA Story is a great comedy film. Its comedy is of a serious nature and many may not find it enjoyable. Shot in the early 90s the film has a sort of sunny glow that paints the entire Los Angeles city scape. This is a love letter to the city of Los Angeles and there are some very gooey scenes which will make you want to visit the city of angels. Steve Martin during this time was at the top of his game and he is in sublime form here. His real life partner at the time Victoria Tennant is equally good as a new arrival to the city. Sarah Jessica Parker long before her famed stint in NYC is refreshing as the young, perky woman. L.A story is a very good comedy and an ode to Los Angeles.
Hush (2016)
A great horror film
A great horror film released on Netflix. You should give this one a shot if you like genuinely creepy stories.
Reasonable Doubt (2014)
Avoid it
There is a reasonable doubt that Samuel L Jackson was back on some rent or mortgage payment because there is no reason he'd be apart of this abomination if not to pay someone off. The plot is predictable, and you know how it will end in the first minute of the film. Its not even good escapist fun. (Avoid it)
