Outer Banks (2020)
A bunch of models try acting
If you like soap opera-quality stories with soap opera-quality acting, shorter seasons and bigger budgets then you might like this. If you like... things that are good then you probably won't. Am I the only one tired of seeing garbage shows based around giving some attractive 20-somethings an excuse to work? And this dude is 27 and playing a 17 year old, it's not even mildly believable. I guess it's just me, but I'd rather see a show and know that the actors were cast for the talent first and looks second, and not the other way around.
Defective (2017)
No more, please...
Reese Eveneshen describes himself as a "filmmaker" on his twitter bio.
He should really, really stop.
Prospect (2018)
Is this its own genre now?
I have to know, is "Incompetent teenage girl gets people killed in survival situation and makes life progressively harder for herself" its own genre now? I'm getting so tired of these stories.
Into the Dark: Down (2019)
Who are we supposed to be rooting for?
I'd like to go over what ACTUALLY happened in this film because I feel like the writers wrote something with one thing in mind but don't realize how it actually comes across.
-Dude traps woman in elevator.
-Woman gets drunk with dude and manipulates him into getting aroused and having sex with her, knowing fully she has no intention of pursuing something further with him but doesn't tell him until after.
-Dude gets understandably upset and admits he trapped her in elevator.
-Dude apologizes and ALLOWS HER TO GO FREE.
-Woman verbally and physically assaults and threatens the man.
-Woman breaks the key they needed to escape, effectively ACTUALLY trapping them in the elevator.
-Woman FURTHER BRUTALLY attacks the man.
-Everything beyond this point is honestly self-defense on the guy's part.
Yes. The guy fake trapped her in an elevator to get a chance with her. His self esteem was poor and he didn't think she'd give him the time of day otherwise. YES he watched her quite a bit, but it was his JOB. He works security. He watched a LOT of people. All the things he did pale in comparison to how absolutely horribly she treats him before AND after she finds out and the several times she mercilessly assaults him while he doesn't fight back because he still likes her.
Again... who are we supposed to be rooting for? Because this film is framed like her actions are justified but they're CLEARLY not.
Stephanie (2017)
Discount Elfen Lied
I expected more from Akiva Goldsman and Frank Grillo. Just another over-powered spooky little kid ghost/demon/alien/mutant thing where everyone dies in the end and the world is doomed and there's nothing we can do to stop it and blahblahblah.
There isn't a shred of originality in this film. All these reviews that say it's an original idea have never seen literally any other film, show, or anime about a young girl who has some kind of ability that makes them super dangerous and indestructible. The 4400 did it, the Resident Evil movies did it, I mean come on. Elfen Lied was emotionally manipulative with its cutesy characters but at least it took time to develop characters and create a backstory and explain things.
On a somewhat unrelated note: the musical score of this film was a bit overbearing in a lot of parts.
Slumlord (2015)
Offensively stupid
Production: constant barrage of cliche "spooky" ambient noise.
Characters: unlikeable. Don't care what happens to them.
Special effects: none. No CG, no practical. Pretty much zero gore. If that's your thing you'll hate this movie.
Creepiness?: Some really pathetic attempts at gross-out horror. Other than that, this is a movie about a creepy looking dude terrorising attractive people in LA. Just what this world needs, more garbage to make the pretty folks treat unattractive people with social difficulties or mental illnesses with fear and disgust.
Dude doesn't even have an interesting motivation. Writer probably thought it was creepier that way. Well, that works for inhuman monsters like Michael Meyers and Jason, but this is just a regular old dude. He could be a war vet in need of psychiatric help for all we know.
Seriously f#$k this movie.
Better Off Ted (2009)
Hilarious, zany and extremely well-written.
Better Off Ted is a great show. Unfortunately I, like everyone else, didn't watch it while it was on-air and now it's been canceled due to low viewership. The characters are all very likable and interesting, but also wacky and just plain fun. One of my favorite parts of this series is how characters develop and there is actual continuity in the story, previous episodes are referenced later and such. In other screwball comedies like Scrubs I felt the show went on with a story and feigned character development but by the later seasons the characters were still making the same stupid mistakes and had the same character flaws. I realize writing a comedy show with continuity can be difficult, because it's easier for them to ignore realism for the sake of laughs, but Better Off Ted actually did this well. Being set in a completely unrealistic world in the dystopian mega-corporation helps this, I'm sure, and the company's commercials display this very well.
