47 Meters Down: Uncaged (2019)
Genuinely Scary, Insane Fun and Totally Original!
I'll start by admitting i'm a big shark movie fan, so I went in with high expectations. But that also means i'm Hard to please... I really enjoyed the first movie but I instantly knew this wasn't going to be a simple rehash, Roberts (writer/director) is FAR smarter than that... The characters were fun and realistic, the stakes were higher and just so painfully claustrophobic and the twist on typical sharks is brilliantly original. There is some incredible set pieces (that come thick and fast, the pacing is perfect) but the stand out scene for me is the 'ladder' scene... I'll say no more because if you haven't seen this, treat yourself and go have some of the best fun tou'll have in the theatre this summer!
The Strangers: Prey at Night (2018)
TERRIFYING, EXHILARATING AND FRESH!!
I lay my cards on the table and admit I'm a huge fan of the original movie and I'm not sure if that makes me the ideal or the worst audience.
I was excited to revisit The Strangers universe, if you like, but equally, I was nervous this was going to be a simple cash in job that in truth belongs in the Target DVD section gathering dust.
But very quickly my Home Entertainment fears evaporated and were replaced with gripping fear, electric excitement and raw anticipation - a feeling I remember oh so fondly from sitting in a theater watching the original!
This is the type of horror that reminds me why making the trip to see it on the big screen is still very much worth it as the audiences reactions, the gasps and squeals, is all part of the fun, key to the experience. I hadn't actually realised the director is the same dude behind 47 Metres Down, a movie I also saw in the theater last year and loved that as well, so I guess I'm a new fan. I'm undoubtedly a fan of Prey At Night, worthy of a second theater viewing me thinks.
Inglourious Basterds (2009)
Brave, unique and just sheer brilliant!
Inglorious Basterds makes no apologies, asks for no forgiveness, it's a no holds barred assault on the senses. Tarantino doesn't care if he offends, if he steps all over stereotypes and clichés, this is film making at it purest. It's great to see a film maker whose work clearly isn't interfeared with by the powers that be. Tarantino is a master of effortlessly cranking up immense tension and suddenly mixing it with laugh out loud moments; you're not sure if you should be looking away in disgust or rolling around laughing, either way it's a roller coaster and one not to be missed! It's not for everyone, certainly if you're not a fan of Tarantino's style, this may be a little hard to swallow, but never-the-less, it is a film which simply has to be seen. No self respecting film fan should miss this. And the performance of Christoph Waltz... Oscar don't you dare ignore him!!
Mamma Mia! (2008)
Best Surprise of the Year!! (From a none Abba Fan!)
I went to see the film with my girlfriend and wasn't really interested, although it did have a very impressive cast! I LOVED it! What a great surprise, I laughed the whole way through and found myself completely invested in the plot!! The acting, singing and dancing was superb, I honestly believe Streep (who looked fantastic!) could be up for an Oscar.
Additionally it's a genuine breath of fresh air to see a primarily older cast given roles full of fun and energy! Every one of the older cast deserve honourable mentions! (I'm 27 BTW, so its not like i'm a bitter old person either! lol) Go check it out, well worth it!
