History of the World: Part I (1981)
Times change, definitely.
I saw this movie at the cinema in 1983, when I was 16 years old. Actually, most of my school mates saw it as well, and we couldn't talk about anything else: It was an extremely funny and hilarious movie! Every single detail caused us to crack up, from the monkeys at the beginning to the Jews at the end.
Now, I've just got to see it again on DVD. I was very enthusiastic about it but... Meh! One and a half hours wasted in my life. I barely could stand it. The gags resulted so dumb to me.
I don't want to rate this movie because I'll be unfair for sure. It's just a matter of perspective: For a 16-year old in 1983, it's a really funny movie. For a 43-year old in 2010, it is certainly not. : = (
For comedies that have stood the test of time (off the top of my head), check "Top Secret!", Steve Martin's "All Of Me" and the French "Les Sous-Doués Passent Le Bac".
Eruption (1977)
Great production values, not so much arousal.
I think my review's title perfectly summarizes my feelings toward this movie. I am a true fan of the "Golden era of porn" and this is undoubtedly one of the most "polished" efforts released during that era thanks to locations, music and the fact that there's some plot and acting. While I've always considered John Holmes a terrible actor (contrary to John Leslie), this and "Hot & Saucy Pizza Girls" are his best attempts.
Unfortunately, the sex scenes didn't do so much for me aside from Leslie Bovee's evident oral expertise displayed in the end of the scene at the cane field.
If you want to see a movie with similar production values AND some really arousing sex scenes, check 1978's "The Other Side Of Julie". Now that's what I call an overall high-quality production (for porn standards, of course).
Pink Champagne (1979)
A great XXX movie ruined by awful editing
I saw the movie trailer for "Pink Champagne" (without sound) on a Betamax tape in the mid eighties and all this time I was desperately looking for this movie since the trailer showed really good scenes (for my taste, at least). After around 25 years, I could find it. What a excitement!
But I'm not going to write a detailed review. The only thing I want to say is that the sex scenes, models, soundtrack... everything from this movie is REALLY GOOD... but what the heck were the movie editors thinking? The "key" moments of the movie are hardly enjoyable because the camera constantly switches from one face to another and, even worse, from one scene to a different one happening at the same time (including abrupt background music changes).
I feel so sad about this movie because again, it's a really good one. It could be a staple of the golden age of porn if the editors just showed a bit of intelligence and common sense. They didn't, and that's enough for me to subtract seven stars to a movie that clearly deserves the maximum score for an adult film.
The Strange and Deadly Occurrence (1974)
So many memories form my early teens
I had this movie for a long time in a Betamax tape bought by my father just after buying our first color TV (a Sony KV-2142R) and Betamax (Sony SL-8600) back in mid 1978. Dubbed to Spanish and re-titled "La Casa Embrujada" ("The Haunted House"), I consider it a promising movie with a really bad ending, but anyway I'd love to have that Spanish-dubbed version just for memories from when I was eleven. It was recorded from a Panamanian TV broadcast, commercials included. I used it a lot (specially Dr. Gillgreen's face) to adjust the TV's hue and color settings, at a time in which color TV broadcasts hadn't arrived to my country (Color TV was officially launched in Colombia on Saturday Dec. 1, 1979 at 7:00 PM GMT -5). The only worry in life back then was school...
