Sex and the City (2008)
Strictly for SATC fans only.
This is for the fans, and only for the fans. Those who lived and loved and suffered and rejoiced over the years with Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte, and Miranda will in all likelihood be delighted by the cinematic production. It is a continuation and an affirmation that life goes on even after reruns. For those who do not consider themselves to be among the Sex and the City faithful, however, this is a painful experience, perhaps the longest 148 minutes likely to be spent in a movie theater this year. Watching grass grow is more dramatically satisfying. The niche audience will applaud it; everyone else will either ignore it (the wisest choice) or fall asleep if ambushed into seeing it. There are no surprises here, either for fans or non-fans.
The Signalman (1976)
Incredible atmosphere in this short.
One of the finest shorts ever made in my opinion. A signalman in a far flung mini junction is used to his ways until a stranger appears one day. This is a ghost story as well as a take on solitude, technology and the supernatural. What I recall about this short is the haunting look and feel of the location. The film stayed with me because it reminded me of vague concepts such as time, space and memories. This is a short film (barely 40 mins) and yet it perhaps even exceeds the literary source if you go by some online opinion.
Paranormal Activity (2007)
A must watch horror.
Do not judge this original film by its many sequels because this is a genuinely terrifying movie which deserves every accolade thrown its way. Its making has also become legendary in film circles- it was made for a mere 15,000 dollars, shot in one locations by part time actors but the manner with which the director goes about the story is astonishing. It literally made many people jump up in their seats. Of course, all depends on how one views this film and sitting with friends and beer won't do it any justice. Watch this one if you haven't already.
