Edge of Obedience (2017)
Inspiring and educational
There is something particularly inspiring to me about artists who are so compelled to express themselves that they take extreme risks in doing so. It speaks not only to courage but to some kind of inner drive that great artists have that compels them to express their unique vision to the world. Ahmad Zaki Anwar is one of those artists, and Edge of Obedience is his story of fighting for his artistic expression in Malaysia, where his art is unwelcome. The film is beautifully shot and very well executed.
Stadium Anthems (2018)
Funny mockumentary taking on the movie industry
Stadium Anthems is a really funny indy comedy kind of in the style of The Office or Parks and Rec (although quite a bit raunchier.) It takes on the music industry and features cutting satire of not only the seedier side of the industry, but the devolution of music from great art into often popular trash. At the core of it the movie works really well because the main character is a music exec who, despite being in and part of this devolution, at his core wants to be part of great music and great artistry. His journey is one I think any real music lover can relate to, and his attitude of "if it can't be about the music is it really worth it" brings a purity that stands in great and biting contrast to the many other characters who are all perpetuating the whole charade. The movie delivers because it is not just funny, but if your a music lover it really gives you something to root for.
Broken Ceiling (2018)
Good acting, socially relevant
This indy drama had all the ingredients. A good story, good acting, and really nice technical execution. It's socially relevant to, and a clever hook. A great example of independent film in the digital era.
The Redeeming (2018)
Clever low budget mystery/horror
The Redeeming is a clever low budget mystery/horror. It's probably more categorized as horror but you spend a good part of the film curious about what the heck is happening. It's pretty much a single location, two-character dialog driven film (which I like), so you really have to pay attention. Worth a watch.
