Mary Shelley (2017)
Elle Fanning is great!
Elle Fanning is awesome in this film (as always) but the script tried to cover too much time and we're left with beautiful snippets that spark interest but are never fully satisfying - as soon as we get into a bit of story, we suddenly move-on and too many threads are left untied. I enjoyed the spectacle, but they maybe bit-off too much!
Calibre (2018)
Just watch the film - don't check what it's about!
I caught this film at the Edinburgh Festival and it was brilliant. I didn't know anything about it and that meant the the Act 1 twist really gripped me. I'd really recommend watching it without doing any research as it's just great. The ending loses a bit of its momentum, but that didn't take away from this great film. Great debut!
Dead in a Week (Or Your Money Back) (2018)
The barnstorming comedy we've been waiting for since In Bruges!
It's rare you get laugh-out-loud British Independent Comedies in the cinema, but that's exactly what Dead in A Week is. The director does a really great job of delivering big laughs with sensitive material. The performances are brilliant across the board with Christopher Eccleston's sweary head-of-the-guild-of-assassins especially memorable. The older couple steal the show at the climax with some heartfelt moments. The film takes a comic look at our sense of purpose in life. It reminded me of In Bruges and Fargo and we don't see many films like that these days - I thought is was great!
