Stan & Ollie (2018)

Poignant touching drama.
20 September 2022
A poignant, touching drama that focuses on the last years of Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy and their tour of the U. K. I loved watching the classic re-runs on BBC2 back on tv in the 80s and now I own everything they did on DVD, even the silent shorts made before they were paired up by Hal Roach. I usually find fault with biopics but not this time. The cast all did an excellent job. I was very impressed with how authentic Steve Coogan and John C Reily had the voices down pat. Reily's performance was especially flawless and with the aid of prosthetics looks just like Oliver. Beautifully shot too, I liked the image of the Tyne Bridge and the scene that used Tynemouth Station as I'm a local. A nice insight into the relationship between the greatest comedy duo of all time. Had to fight tears by the end. Great movie.

Stick with it, it gets better.

Ah, a gross out comedy? Ok I'm in, let's give this a go. Well, after a few minutes it was apparent that some of the acting was a bit lacking and with jokes falling flat (Zuckerman and Crew, I am looking at you) I prematurely assumed this was going to be rubbish. Also in the first few minutes a character says various homophobic slurs no less than 6 times directed at his brother. In this cancel culture age, some might take issue with that. Yeah, it's a movie that has been done so many times now... American Pie, Road Trip, Euro Trip, etc. As the movie went along it got a lot better. I thought Clark Duke and James Marsden were great and propped this movie up. It was quite enjoyable in the end with some good laughs thanks to the lesser characters played by Seth Green, Charles McDermott and Mark L. Young.

Funniest movie of all time
21 March 2022
Quite possibly the funniest movie you will ever see. Me and the wife watched it and we had to pause it as we couldn't breath for laughing so hard, tears rolling. Etc. Watched it again recently and still had the same effect. Recommended it to my brother and my dad and they both said they were aching with laughter. It has a couple of moments of gross out humour but it's done in a very comedic way, best avoid though if you are easily offended and a serious type who is intent to go through life doing nothing but tutting and raising eyebrows.

Could have done with less famous people waffling on...
20 January 2022
Sparks, true originals, utterly brilliant, and the best band since the Beatles, but you knew that already, right? I don't think I'll be watching this documentary over and over. It seemed to rush through the mid to later period of their career. Overall the footage clips are simply too short and the many celebrities and musicians paying tribute in their mini interviews taking up valuable screen time is too much, especially when the feature runs over 2 hours. I would have liked to have seen less famous people telling us how great we already know Sparks are and more of Sparks, frankly. The bonus disc is rather excellent, a full concert and other extras.

Guardians of the galaxy it's not

Wife: what you watching? Me: 2001: A Space Odyssey. Wife after 2 minutes: what a pile of s#1t this is. Me: Not every movie should be like Guardians of the Galaxy. Wife: Hate it when you get defensive, like I'm not intellectual or cultural enough. Me: I just want to watch without you criticising it every 5 minutes. (Movie ends. I pass her the remote) (Wife puts on Judge Judy)

I love this movie. Hugely influential and pioneering in special effects. Inspired George Lucas, David Bowie, etc. I think whether you will enjoy it depends on if you are patient and open minded enough to sit through long bouts of no dialogue and an unexpected ending which perplexes. My wife likes Adam Sandler and Dwayne Johnson movies, while I like Eraserhead which she still hasn't forgiven me for introducing her to. Hehe.

Excellent show!

An excellent much loved show from my childhood that I still enjoy today. Great storylines and action. It still doesn't have a full complete release on DVD or Blu Ray (only the first 2 seasons with no plans to release the rest, apparently down to poor sales, really?), which is criminal considering pretty much every 80s show, even the rubbish ones have. I hope someday soon I will be able to watch the later seasons again.

Outstanding.

I know the name Todd Phillips from his first feature as a student film maker, the 1993 cult documentary on extreme punk rocker, GG Allin, 'Hated: GG Allin and The Murder Junkies. Joker has a few references to GG littered throughout. Joaquin's performance is breathtakingly outstanding. Fantastic movie. 10/10

One of the worst movies I've ever seen. Not funny at all. Predictable gross out humour has all been done.

Warning: Spoilers
A heavily narrative script where the characters attempt to give the viewer some idea to what is going on. Well done special effects and some gore but that is it. I watched the whole thing you possibly will not due to the bad acting.

Ninja masterpiece

Loved this as a kid in the 80s. Up there with the Revenge of the Ninja and American Ninja movies. This needs a DVD release!
