About time
10 August 2021
Have you ever discovered something you were waiting for, without knowing it? It seems like this was a long, long, long time coming.

Well written. Well acted. Brings a fresh, hip aesthetic that stills smells authentic.

Thank you.

This string of sensations is a quantum hyperfold of all possible superlatives
21 July 2021
I am a latecomer to many a good thing. About twenty years late to Seinfeld. If I'd missed this one I'd be reincarnated as a TV watching organism for sure.

You can tell, well, a lot, about how smart the people behind a show are. And sometimes how wise. It is a precious thing indeed when they are exceedingly both, and ridiculous that it comes in the guise of a cartoon. Or is it?

Thank you.

Real time update, all seasons: this is what happens when you live in your bed, and learn words in your head. G Zrs, pay attention: herpes... bad. Ice cream... good. Your mind... woke. This show... the most anti-woke thing out there right now. May you synchronize.

good sci fi
13 May 2021
We are living through a sci fi drought. It's a desert out there, with a lot of dehydration induced 3rd and 4th rate delusions. This will quench your thirst for a while.

Good technical execution. Doesn't underestimate the viewer. Fantastic acting. And... French?!

Hey universe, we're an advanced civilization, right?

It should be within our super powers to recognize bad material before we invest so much into turning it into expensive turds, right? Or stop somewhere along the way? Or find a highly sophisticated way to prevent misleading reviews?

Or are we still too simple?

"This is so one of those ideas" (5'55")
3 May 2021
I'll begin with some empathy. I understand creative space can seem to be shrinking, and gen Zrs need to explore what they may.

I grew up in a desert, and while we never lacked for anything, a basic understanding of water was ingrained early. When, in the first few seconds of this film I saw one of the makers brush his teeth with the faucet left running, I got it. Primary evidence of virtue signaling is a deep ignorance of virtue on the part of the signaler.

Who draws the poverty line? Who decides what that means? Is hunger poverty?

We primarily imitate. Until now at least some of what we imitated had some earthly roots. These kids don't even have that, but imitate them through an hour of celebrity.

How noble, now that you are back high above the line.

This humor needed an island to grow into something specially kiwi. It is even drier than the British, from which it evolved, and so multilayered you sometimes can't laugh right away.

Bloody brilliant. Not too bloody.

Beautifully shot. Holland moves into Oscar category. Best performance I've seen in a good while.

Good job, BBC
26 February 2021
For years I've been gravitating to the BBC app for my news. They seem to be the current version of what the NYT once was, or as close to.

Documentaries these days, however well made, are unapologetically partial. It behooves anyone purporting to document with a camera to present both sides of every coin. A worthy documentary in the present, all things considered, is one that makes you think deeply and leaves you undecided.

This one does the job.

Like a forgotten dream
23 August 2020
I remember hearing about this as a teenager, and about how it failed in some nonspecific manner. How wrong. How nice to unmake a memory.

This is a remarkable film about a remarkable human story. It is well made and engaging, whatever your feelings are for the characters and their doings.

This was not a technical experiment, just as our life on Biosphere 1 is not. It was, and is, a human one. And if you make it to the end of the film you will understand why the experiment was a resounding success. May ours be as well.

A model documentary, at last
14 August 2020
Balance is a word we take for granted. It is as hard to achieve in film as it is easy to grasp conceptually. This is a balanced film.

It is also beautifully shot, scored, edited... I am looking forward to the directors 2nd piece!?

Personally, I have been hosting the intuition that there is a non-benign (read, potentially fatal) shortage of sagacity in our species. This is most evident in our relationship with technology. So throughout the film I was waiting, pleading for someone to say a thing. And when the youth with sickle cell, a few moments before the curtain, says it, my heart leaped at him. We suffer for a reason.

Ask the right question. Do we want to stop suffering?

Divisive by design
3 August 2020
It is no wonder reviewers either hate or love this. It is technically superb - from camera to actor, and thematically repugnant. After all is seen and heard one remains with: why? Was the point to demonstrate that less than a century ago we were closer to our beasts of burden than we imagine. But above all what is troubling is the almost inane insistence on different forms of animal cruelty. Troubling of the creator, and of those who still choose to admire the creation.

The original, with all its imperfections, is the only movie I consider perfect. Yay, it holds a sacred post in the inner pantheon.

This, I confess, is the sweetest thing since sliced banana bread. Thank goodness for bored, homebound celebs.

Raw and unpretentious
2 June 2020
I'm at a loss where to start, because there is no one particular thing that makes this one of the best things the screen has ever hosted. It's like the 80s were filtered to their finest stuff with the aid of future sensibilities. But that sounds like hogwash.

The story taps into emotions so intuituve they seem unbecoming in our sophisticated digitized lives. It is more lifelike than whatever passes for life these days, and it's hard to swallow it for fiction.

The acting, and what seems like individuated camera styles, are as good as you'll find. Ettinger is a revelation.

Fans of Budd will recognize old magic and he achieves what Vangelis did with Blade Runner, an unexpected and untasted ambiance. It's not so much that the music compliments the scenes or vice versa, but that they elevate each other to something new.

For those of us who have grown cynical about our time's creativity, prepare to lose a bit of that.

I should not like this one, based on my demographic. But this show defies stereotype, and I really enjoy it. Not one uninteresting character, and funny plot lines. Keep it up!

There is nothing wrong with a movie that isn't polished like a diamond. No, the writing isn't perfect and the acting is not genius (albeit good), but stories are bigger than their words. The cinematography is very nice, especially if you're a fan of NY.

I look forward to more from the creator.

To all the reviewers who took the time to be disappointed here. Broadly, they're all correct. Sometimes, that's all the protest we have.

Sir Patrick, I grew up on you in the captain's chair. I saw you on Bdway 4 times. You deserved better.

The show gets a few stars for the production value. Sometimes, that's all that's left.

showbiz and quality - season 2
29 January 2020
I was sad when Galavant was canceled. The 2nd season premiere of MW made it feel like someone is trying to make up for it. It is a rare case when a good show gets even better, dramatically better, its 2nd season.

I won't go as far as equating it with The Princess Bride but, like said film, there is nothing extraneous in the first episode. Very clever and good humor.

I was in the mood, googled Italian series, and... oh my. What a surprise. The writing is intelligent and creative. The acting is fantastic, and even the hot blooded melodrama comes off well. Top notch cinematography, editing, music and... based on real events. Just a real treat to discover and I can't wait for another season.

How many of these are left?

This is a gem, precious in every way, and makes you wonder how much longer we'll be able to invest this kind of attention and feeling into film. Half a generation more? I'm beginning to understand the internet, ratings, and what they mean about who we are. They point, just not in the right way.

Don't retire yet!
23 September 2019
The formula for priming our morals is ancient and simple. 'A' does something really, really bad. 'B' does whatever he wants to balance the scales. Satisfying. This movie excels in this regard.

Are we ready for Rambo to retire? Is there no way Arni can recruit him to fight a predator, one last time? Please.

Excellent mood, acting, pace
26 August 2019
This will do very little to balance the Wokeness, but oh well. Contrary to popular opinion, and I should know being from the area, this is not a political show. It is a thriller that, sadly, triggers a raw audience. Understandable in today's digital culture, if regrettable.

It has a deliberate pace I can't quite compare to anything else. The Palestinian father deserves an Emmy.

I'm a child of the 80s, and I loved the first season. Lost my faith on the 2nd, but now they've tuned down the horror (ok, only 3 episodes in), tuned UP the 80s, and I'm a believer. Funnier and pure fun. Thank you.

Remarkable, Important
28 June 2019
The rating path for this film will certainly speak to the subject of the film.

Very touching, moving and well made. Manages what politics doesn't, to give new life to a very old narrative.

Thank you, Bryan.
