Ocean's Eight (2018)

Woah!!!
31 December 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Upon watching this film, I had never seen the original/previous films related in the franchise. Going in with a clean slate, I fell in love with the plot and the characters, finding myself rooting for the actors to succeed in illegally stealing billions of dollars in a jewelry heist. The emotional power of the film wowed me and left me extremely impacted. The use of short cuts combined with long continuous shots to show the different characters in their roles in the heist provided an extremely engaging perspective for the audience. Each of the characters have their own backgrounds and roles in helping the whole heist become a success, like piecing a puzzle together that ultimately fits perfectly in place. The humor intertwined in some tense moments combines to produce a wonderful balance of laughs and nerves throughout the film, making the movie more dynamic and most certainly not boring or predictable. I highly recommend!

Avatar (2009)
10/10
Movie of the century.

Warning: Spoilers
This movie always leaves me stunned, even after the 47th time I have watched it. The cast has such an array of talent and a dynamic range of characterization that allows for an exciting but not cheesy film that avoids clichés. Throughout the film, Cameron and the production crew construct a whole new world and universe using computer animation/construction and revolutionary film techniques leaving the audience to feel transported to another place and time. The dramatic shots like the close ups on the avatar faces overlapped with non-diabetic tribal music create an amazing depth to the plot that adds intensity and passion. One of my favorite scenes that captures the director choices is the scene where home tree is shot down by the military forces. The camera moves shakily to simulate the chaos of the attack, as the only sound that is heard is the tree bark breaking as the tree falls-no screaming or music, only the tree breaking. This strikes emotion right in the audience, as the intensity can be felt within. This movie was and continues to be my favorite film because of the timeless intricacies that make it so unique.

A Quiet Place (2018)
10/10
Wow.
29 October 2018
This movie was so refreshing and exhilarating, as it is such a unique and captivating horror film/thriller compared to others out there. The silence of almost the entire movie provides a chilling effect on the audience, shocking them with abrupt noises or the creepy crawling of the creatures. The sign language is an amazing element as well, depicting a new perspective/understanding for the audience. One of the main characters, Millicent Simmons (who plays Regan Abbott) is a deaf American actress that has been nominated for many awards. Her spreading awareness and representation for the deaf community is another amazing element that makes this movie an incredible film. On top of the audial choices, the back and forth cuts between the creatures crawling around and Emily Blunt trying to hide while in labor provide an incredible element of suspense and anticipation that strikes fear in the audience. This suspense builds with the close up shots and angles of the creatures and their ears (canals), thus making the audience uncomfortably close to the creepy/slimy monsters. This dynamic element, used throughout the film, coupled with other casting/directing choices makes this film a 10/10 for me!

Jurassic Park (1993)
9/10
Such a classic.
28 September 2018
This movie is definitely one to remember. Despite being filmed in the 90s, Jurassic Park continues to be a classic to this day. Watching the movie now highlights the contrast between the effects then and the special effects available now. This, along with some acting that is a tad overdone, are the only real critiques I would give this film. The child actors were especially hilarious to me-the young boy, Timmy, has moments that really capture a reaction that a child in real life would have ("I threw up." "Well that's ok! That happens sometimes"-Allen-is one of my favorite quotes). Another extremely influential aspect of this film is the music that plays over certain intense scenes and the iconic theme music in the opening/closing. The music combined with the diegetic sound of the dinosaur stomping/approaching builds the suspense and creates an intense tension in the audience. As a classic worldwide, it's no wonder that this movie provided the basis for generations of movies to follow.

Breaking Bad: Crazy Handful of Nothin' (2008)
Season 1, Episode 6
10/10
Had me on the edge of my seat.
28 September 2018
Warning: Spoilers
This episode of BB was awesome! It had my whole family and I on the edge of our seats. The episode began with a flash forward, in which the end scene is our first to show what will happen in the future (the audience doesn't know how it will lead up to that scene yet). It shows Walt on a tilted shot (shows something isn't right) walking away from a destroyed building with diegetic sounds of ringing and distant voices. Later we learn that Walt has become involved with Tuco, a very powerful drug individual-this is uncharacteristic for Walt (up until that point, he had stayed relatively 'safe' with his manufacturing). Later we learn Walt begins chemo (explaining his bald head in opening scene) and that he goes to Tuco's main building calling himself Heisenberg and demanding a certain amount of money for each order. He then blows up the building with chemicals he brought as a warning to Tuco to listen or else. This episode shows a huge character development for Walt, as we see a transformation from a more innocent/uninvolved Walt to a fully invested and threatening Walt.

Had me on the edge of my seat.

Warning: Spoilers
This episode of Breaking Bad was a thriller that had my whole family and I on the edge of our seats in suspense. I was immediately drawn in by the flash forward technique, where the episode begins by showing the ending (Walt w/ a bleeding nose, walking away from a building that was destroyed, with diegetic sounds of ringing and distant voices). The audience instantly wants to see how the episode unfolds to lead them to this point (up until then, Walt had hair still-hadn't gone through chemo yet- and was relatively 'cautious' about his manufacturing). There are multiple different shots that create suspense, including the tilt shot (shows something is off) after Walt walks away from the building that we later find out he blew up as a message to Tuco and his men. Overall, it was a great episode that really showed a character development (Walt is more invested/deeper into the drug world) and how it impacts his life and family.
