Boring Benjamin
14 May 2009
Looks like I'm in the minority of reviewers.

This movie is Boring with a capital B. And, incredibly long to boot! As the main character gets younger, you feel yourself getting older.

I thought it might get interesting when Cate Blanchett's character was finally introduced but even her good acting couldn't save it for me.

The only redeeming feature was the ending. If you can make it that far without dying of old age, that is. My suggestion? Go to the last 20 minutes of the movie and watch that.

At least Forrest Gump had some interesting things going on around a very ordinary guy. Benjamin Button is just, plain, ordinary.

Corny, over-the-top and FUN
22 April 2009
OK, some parts are not the best film-making of all time but, in my opinion, the film is not as horrible as other reviewers make it out to be.

Yes, some of the dialog is a bit corny and over-the-top but isn't that the charm of films based on graphic novels? I guess this is the type of movie you either like or you don't like. Thus, the 5-star (50%) rating.

For me, this movie is great fun and as the story developed I began to like it more and more. Is there overacting? That could be argued. I think it was intentional and gives a nice lampoon feel to it.

Don't expect too much and you won't be disappointed. This has the potential to become a cult classic. That is something that cannot be forced or predicted.

A river (of blood) runs thru it
12 March 2009
What's with the murky video in the beginning and sporadically throughout the movie? It's like someone put muddy water on the camera lens.

The violence and nudity might turn some people off but, that, along with the mostly bad acting is what makes a good cult movie I suppose.

My favorite line is delivered by Tarquin the Vampire, "Alas, your breed is dumb." Okay, no one should ever say "alas" in a movie line unless they're English and living in the 18th century.

The acting by the Van Helsing character and bad girl "Rally" isn't bad. I also liked Master Little played by Ron Little. Wicked martial arts! Don't take it too seriously and you'll enjoy it.

funny & bad
11 March 2009
Great cult movie with unintentionally funny dialog and acting. I lost tract of the body count.

Yes, as others have mentioned, there is a sex/nude scene which doesn't make much sense within the context of the movie. That's a minor problem.

This is one film you can sit and enjoy - and mock - with impunity. And, thankfully, has a running time of about 83 minutes.

Now, I just wish I could create a stake deadly enough to stick into the heart of this movie.

I'm giving it a 3 out of 10, which may be more than it really deserves but the CGI is pretty good throughout, so there's that.

So Bad it was Good?
9 March 2009
I purchased this movie in a 4-pack titled "Vamps." The other movies are Vampire Stakes (2002), Abomination: The Evilmaker 2 (2003) and The Darkness (2003). Hopefully the others are better than this one.

The video has a lot of on-purpose camera movement which I thought was kind of cool and not distracting at all. Okay, it was a little distracting.

The movie has lots of visuals and not a lot of dialog especially toward the middle of the film (which is something to be thankful for). The acting and dialog are unintentionally funny. This may be one of those cult movies that's just so bad it's enjoyable...at least for some.

You could say this movie poses the moral question: Is it more merciful to kill a loved one to save them from becoming a blood-thirsty psycho vampire or to let them live?

Overall, the movie was "peachy."

a movie about nothing?
9 March 2009
Many reviewers say they didn't "get" the movie or that it wasn't about anything. I felt the same way until I realized maybe that's the point. This film addresses the question, What is success? Is success only what our society defines success as? Or can success really be something else altogether? Something of our own making.

If I had known it was about Charles Bukowski when I was watching it, I might have appreciated it a little more. I'm a fan of his blunt way of writing. Bukowski was primarily a poet and he had a terrible childhood, which obviously affected his entire life and worldview.

Definitely not a film for the suicidal or depressed or alcoholic. By the end I needed a stiff drink and a bottle of sleeping pills.

If this film were wine...
22 October 2008
...if this film were wine, it would be a 93.

I saw this film at a recent Sunday matinée at our local art cinema house. There were probably 20 other people there. Forget comparisons to "Sideways" - both films had wineries in them. That's about it. The film is primarily about Englishman Steve Spurrier's snobbery regarding all things American than about the actual wine tasting in Paris.

I loved the relationship between the characters - Spurrier and Maurice (Dennis Farina) and between the father and son (Bill Pullman and Chris Pine). Some really excellent dialogue and acting. Yes, Alan Rickman does a great job.

Highly recommended.

If I had known...
10 June 2008
If I knew then what I know now I wouldn't have rented this movie. It is very disjointed if you don't know the graphic novels it's based on and the multi-layers of things going on. I didn't give it a 1 star (awful) because it's not the director's fault I didn't do my homework. I gave it a 2 because it doesn't really deserve anything higher.

Having said that, the premise of the movie is certainly interesting it's just so darn convoluted it was impossible for us to finish. We kept asking each other - what's going on? - thinking it would begin to explain itself but less than halfway thru we forwarded to the ending. Cinema interruptus. Very unsatisfying.

Surprisingly good
7 February 2006
OK, here's the truth: My wife wanted to see this movie. The preview looked good and it has Queen Latifah. So last weekend we went to a matinée. I admit I didn't have high expectations but this movie was surprisingly touching and entertaining.

The movie explores how important living life to the fullest is. Not a profound theme but handled nicely here. If you listen closely you'll even discover what the "secret of life" is.

Queen Latifah knows a good part when she sees one and her scenes with Gérard Depardieu had me smiling. An all 'round feel good movie. And these days, what's wrong with that?
