Give Cillian Murphy the Oscar!
17 February 2024
This was a magnificent performance by most of the actors. There are a few glaring exceptions (notably, Florence Pugh, whose performance degrades the entire enterprise) but for the most part, this is a truly excellent film. The musical score is really just not very good. The music is so tense throughout the film, there is no build up to the climax. I really dislike the music that accompanies the film. Wow, Hans Zimmer could have done such a magnificent job on the music for this film. I wish Mr. Nolan had used him for the musical score. It would have made a much better film, in my opinion. Other than these rather minor criticisms, I found the film magnificent. Bravo Mr. Nolan, Mr. Murphy, Ms. Blunt, Mr. Damon, and Mr. Downey.

MUCH better than the book
15 February 2024
This is a far more engaging story than the one portrayed in the "novel." I read the book and I believe that it is 90% fiction. It's categorized as fiction and I'm confident that is exactly what it is. Do yourself a huge favor and save yourself from the long, tortuous slog through the book. The author portrays himself as the hero of his own story. It's really quite offensive and shows such great immaturity, that I feel sorry for him. Full stop. If the very high level outline of the book is true, the author is nothing more than a petty, immature and selfish criminal. Charlie Hunnam plays a much more sympathetic person that the author of the book. I slogged through the entire pathetic book and was worse off for it. This series is very enjoyable and thankfully, departed from the awful book in all the right ways. Bravo Apple+ TV. I wish you had not cancelled this series after one season.

An under the radar gem!
10 February 2024
This is hard to warm up to, I admit, but hang in there. It is totally worth your time. I had a difficult time caring about any of it for at least the first 3 episodes but as the story (and its premise) is further revealed in subsequent episodes, I found that I never wanted it to end! A surprising and utterly charming film. The different languages really enhance the experience so I encourage viewers to just read the subtitles to get the full "flavor" of the series. I was not familiar with any of these actors but I certainly am now. I will follow their careers with great interest. Not even one actor hit a false note. Don't miss this one!

Season 1 good, Season 2, not as good, Season 3 - it's past its sell-by date
5 June 2019
Time to end this series. Not worth your time anymore. Even Season 2 was cringe-worthy, not in the sense of making you "think" but in the sense of making literally cringe at the hammy acting and the obvious exertion to stretch the story past 1 season.

Extraordinary
4 June 2019
Thoughtful, carefully-researched, factual (mostly) account of the Chernobyl disaster. Absolutely every actor is spot on and deserving of recognition for this monumental work. Don't miss this one. The drumbeat of the entire series is the "cost of lies." Incredibly applicable to our society today and should give us all pause.

A very well done dramatization of the Central Park jogger case
3 June 2019
A very well done dramatization of the Central Park jogger case and the aftermath and utter failure of the criminal justice system, particularly for people of color. This could have easily been pared down to 2 episodes. It was quite drawn out in parts, frankly to the point of boredom as it was obvious the auteur was seeking to make a point, a point which was driven home very early in the series. Would have been much better if edited down to 2 episodes. And more impactful that way, too.

Delightful romp - David Tennant's performance is the icing on the cake
1 June 2019
While the book is very amusing and droll, the reader is quite tired by end of it and just wants it to be "over." The series is a delight in every way. Truly hilarious moments and some slyly hilarious moments thrown all in good fun. The entire cast is superb but David Tennant truly stands out as over the top marvelous. You can tell he's having a lot of fun with this character!

Intrigued by the opposite reviews of this - my bottom line: it's a slog
18 May 2019
Great premise, great cast, and very well done. Moves at glacial speed. The "lesson" could be imparted in about 2 episodes. I really don't care if two people had an affair, if the teenage couple texted back and forth, etc. These vignettes just make the series longer and actually detract from the "lesson" the film seeks to impart.

Wonderful rendering of the classic satirical novel
17 May 2019
This is a very enjoyable watch, especially if you read the book and saw the movie way back when they were "a thing." The acting is superb and the battle scenes are realistic but not too graphically violent. I appreciate a director and writer who do not feel they must gross us out at every turn. It has a nice subtlety and that was lacking in the original movie. It's a bit drawn out at points and some of the "mood" scenes could definitely be shortened and I think this would enhance the overall series, perhaps reducing it to 5 episodes instead of 6. I found the sex gratuitous and initially turned me off from watching the rest of it all. Why or why do writers/directors feel they MUST add a woman's nude body to each and every series and film?

Can't act their way out of a paper bag
18 April 2019
Some of the worst acting I've ever seen. The plot is drawn out to absurd and boring lengths. This would have been better as a 1.5 hour movie, but with different actors.

I wanted to like this but just couldn't
28 March 2019
It looked so promising, with a very charismatic female star, a compelling story line, and John Goodman. Unfortunately, it failed and then failed again. The female star and John Goodman are both awesome - hands down, particularly when you consider the awful script they had to work with.

Much better than the British version
22 March 2019
Perfectly done detective show that has interesting cases and characters that you actually care about. Much better than the Kenneth Branagh over-acted version in which you do not really care about the plot and you especially do not care about the characters.

Sad from all sides
6 March 2019
Yes, the story is one-sided in that nothing is presented in defense of these allegations. In that, it is not a well-balanced documentary. But you don't have to be a genius to see the other side, too. I feel sad for these men and I feel sad for Michael Jackson, too. I can only imagine how his childhood turned him into the person we saw portrayed in the film. People don't turn into pedophiles because they've had a great childhood. It doesn't work that way. I also feel very sad for his children whose lives has been one long glare of the spotlight and allegations against their father. On the other hand, I feel not one moment of sadness for the parents of these men. I mean really, what parent would leave their kid overnight and for extended periods of time with someone they do not even know? I feel no sympathy for them. I'm shocked their children still even talk to them because it seems clear that these men truly believe that they were sexually abused by MJ. I have no doubt they believe their own stories. And that just adds to the sadness that permeates these films.

Lost its way in Season 2
19 February 2019
It focuses much less on J.K. Simmons' character and more on the other characters, much to its detriment. The only time I'm fully engaged with the series is when J.K. Simmons is on screen. The rest of the characters are very boring, at best. If they can give J.K. Simmons a much larger presence in Season 3 (if it's ever made), the series will be much improved. We just don't care about the other characters - like at all.

Dubbing is just awful
25 January 2019
Not a very interesting series at all. It may be good in the original Spanish but the dubbing is so poor and so trite, it really destroys the viewing the experience. I always prefer to just see subtitles rather a really poor job of dubbing in the dialogue. For the most part, the series is very silly.

To see the dark underbelly of adored TV personalities' real lives and tragedies, look no further than this magical show. This is a masterpiece. And really, can you go wrong with Jim Carrey? No!

Season 6 ruined the whole series for me
21 November 2018
They should have ended this series when Kevin Spacey left. The last season is embarrassingly bad. The script is absurd, the acting is lazy and "phoned-in" and the whole heart of the series is gone - simply gone. It might be enjoyable if you see it as a "theater of the absurd," but I can't imagine anyone taking it as a serious drama. Awful, just awful.

Emilia Clarke can't speak the made-up language
31 October 2018
I don't know if I'm the first one who has noticed this. It's crystal clear that she is not accurately speaking any of the made-up languages. I wish they had chosen someone else for this pivotal role. Other than that, the series is really awesome. Can't get enough of Jon Snow!

Utterly charming film
30 September 2018
In reading the reviews, I can see where people are coming from about it being a simplistic story, etc. But I found the movie utterly charming. Was it predictable? Of course. Maybe it's the music, maybe it's the actors, maybe it's the green cast to everything. Whatever it is, it draws you into its world and carries you away. I loved it!

Cut the time in half, cut the mother/daughter story arc and you have a winner
16 September 2018
At least half of the first season is devoted to exploring the mother/daughter situation that Penn finds himself in. So, the depressive, self-involved, narcissistic mother raised a daughter just like her. What a surprise. Not. This attempt to create the human interest story of Penn just drags down the whole story. The young actor playing the daughter does a great job with what she's given to work with. Melissa George, as the mother, just like all other roles I've seen her in, drags down the whole enterprise with her overly-emotive, ham-handed, poor acting. I rated the series more for would it could be than for what it is. I hope Beau Willimon improves on this script. We know he can do great things!
