Nine Months (1995)
Good film with some laugh out loud moments
Basically Sam(Hugh Grant) and Rebecca(Julianne Moore) are living together and seem to have this perfect life. Suddenly Rebecca tells Sam that they are going to have a baby. He's very unwilling to accept this as it means he'll have to give up on a few things such as his beloved car, as it only fits two people. Rebecca dumps him after a while due to his lack of enthusiasm but then he eventually wins her back. They get married and she has the baby. I think other IMDb members are far too critical about this film. Of course its nit going to win any Oscars but it is a funny rom-com. Its not trying to be this great dramatic film. There was a few really funny moments. I laughed so much when they had the fight with the dinosaur and when Sam kept crashing into people when he was trying to get Rebecca to the hospital. I think Hugh Grant is a very good actor and he did a relatively good job in this film. I also think Robin Williams was so funny as the doctor. I think the Dwyer family added a lot of humour to the film.
But there were some bad moments in the film. The scene where Rebecca and Gail had their babies was completely over the top and something you would expect in a kids show, but yet i still found it funny. Also did Sam get rid of the cat? He should have because that would have meant he was really prepared to give up some of his life for the baby (because the doctor said the cat could be unhygienic to have around when the baby was born. Sam didn't want to give the cat away because he had it for many years) Also i didn't feel like there was any chemistry between Sam and Rebecca
However I still enjoyed the film and i would recommend it if you want a light hearted, funny film to relax to.
Just Like Heaven (2005)
Sweet film
Please don't read this if you haven't the film as I'm going to talk about the climax at the end. I was so glad when I finally got to see this film. It was actually very good, considering its only meant to be a rom-com. Both Reese and Mark were brilliant leads. The film had some very touching moments and i really liked how it started and finished with the garden. I liked the way the story flowed, ie it didn't spend too long on her not realizing she was dead, or her trying to get back into her body. Also the process through which they fell in love was done well and although you would guess it was coming, the film's main focus wasn't about them falling in love (well maybe other's disagree)and when you realized they liked each other you weren't thinking to yourself,oh about time it happened. I personally think that they dealt with the decision her sister had to make to switch of the life support very well. They handled such a raw and difficult subject sensitively. However I think that she survived, almost ruined a brilliant film. I think they stretched the unrealistic story line too far for that part. Even thought its completely unrealistic that a ghost was in Mark's apartment, the film was so good that it had me believing it, however I wasn't able to believe that she could survive. I know I'm not meant to because obviously its a fictitious story but it would have been much more poignant and moving and tragic if she hadn't survived, because then they never got to experience what could have been. However it was still a brilliant film and the more i think about it, the more i like it.
The Mating Habits of the Earthbound Human (1999)
A weird look at the human relationship
This spoof documentary explores the process of beginning a relationship between Jenny and Billy. But it uses really descriptive words for instance instead of "paper", they use "piece of parchment" and instead of "meat" the narrator says "the flesh of dead carcasses" or something like that. The narrator does a very good job. I really liked the film and thought it was so funny. There were so many laugh out loud bits for instance the bit with the superman and when Billy was ringing loads of Jenny's to find her. I was so glad that she didn't have the abortion. I was also happy that he was finally able to tell her he loved her. I saw the film last summer when I was away and we thought we'd watch it Co it looked so interesting and I'm glad I did. I watched it last night again. I was so tired but glad I stayed up to watch it. Its definitely not the best film I've seen but it still is very good.
Brokeback Mountain (2005)
Emotionally rived beautiful film
I couldn't wait to see this film and although it wasn't as good as everyone hyped it up to be it still was an excellent film. The scenery along with the story is breathtaking. The story really pulls you in and it is a refreshing idea to have such a taboo subject told. The story was portrayed very realistically, this is obviously at least partially down to the director, but Jake and Heath deserve every praise they get. All of the actors are phenomenal. Jake in particular is outstanding and your heart just breaks for Michelle. Heath also gives an incredible performance. The music is unbelievably fitting and without meaning to sound really corny, I honestly believe that every time I hear that music I will feel a sense of sadness. Thats how powerful the music is. I really want to read the book now.
Summer Catch (2001)
Oh no not another rom com
The ads for the film looked alright so I thought I would give it a shot because I like Freddie prize junior . I love romantic comedies but this is just so predictable. How many more movies do we have to put up with where the main character has to achieve something great and/or is soul searching. Then suddenly they find all they are looking for in a gorgeous member of the opposite sex. Then they face some huge problem and then just right at the end all their problems disappear. Does that sound familiar to anyone? But basically for anyone who hasn't seen the film its about a guy Ryan (Freddie) who wants to succeed at baseball. He has some problems at home with his dad and brother. He meets Jessica Biel and they fall in love. Her parents have some problems with him as he's poor but in the end they decide to stay together.
The Hot Chick (2002)
The summary of the story is that this pretty popular girl swaps bodies with a thief with hilarious results
I saw "The Hot Chick" on telly las night. . Most of the film was brill.Except there was afew things I didn't like about it. When Jessica got turned into the thief, there was a scene towards the end where she beat someone up really badly. I think that it was far too violent. Also too many people asked to see his/her thing. The joke was over used. Also why did the writers do the bit where jessica's dad showed the "gardener" his thing. But apart from that it was a lot funnier than i thought it would be. i loved their rhyme (Boys are cheats and liars...) and some of the jokes were really good. I thought Adam Sandler was so funny. I loved that Clive (ie Jessica) stuck up for April and especially when he pretended to be her new boyfriend on the phone to Jake. I loved how the writers let April find out about Jessica. It would have been a pretty boring film if it involved Clive trying to hide from everybody. Also the actors were fabulous. There was so many of them that i recognize but didn't know from where. I think Anna Farris was brill. Billy was gorgeous and the Mowry twins were funny. i was right when i thought i spotted Ashlee Simpson. Anyway the film was hilarious and I will definitely have to rent it out or buy it.
