Black Widow (2021)
The did Taskmaster zero justice and the rest of the movie okay
I went into this movie with high hopes. I loved the mysterious backstory of Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow. That mystery is what made her so endearing and intriguing so I wasn't totally thrilled about diving into her history. That being said Marvel didn't do a terrible job with that aspect. Even though I could of done without it.
However, they did a HORRIBLE job with Taskmaster. If you look at the history of MCU movies and shows the best films all one thing in common. A compelling and fearsome villain (or villains). Taskmaster was hyped as this major obstacle for Natasha to overcome in this film but was barely present in the movie. I have no problem with Marvel taking liberties with Taskmasters origin and making the character a female but the character was almost an afterthought. There was one point in the movie where Taskmaster shows up and I thought "oh yeah, I forgot Taskmaster was in this movie". The villain in MCU movies is often as important and sometimes more important than the main hero(s) in order to establish the overwhelming odds that the hero must overcome.
Not a bad movie but not good movie either.
The Mick (2017)
How was this show cancelled!
I hope this picked up by Netflix, Hulu, etc. This show is great. With all the other garbage out there that keeps getting episodes and this gets canceled. Make no sense.
Legion (2017)
Artistic Integrity at its finest
This show seems to stand in the background of the superhero genre when you compare its word of mouth hype but it infinitely surpasses other marvel shows and even some marvel movies in the the quality of writing, acting, and cinematography.
The beautiful thing about this show is it's re-watchabilty. I've watch season 1 three times and find a new level of appreciation each time.
The show was written, directed, and presented as its own stand-alone masterpiece. You can tell that everyone involved feels the same way and takes pride in how special they're work is.
The Punisher (2017)
Season 1 👍🏼👍🏼 / Season 2 👎🏼👎🏼👎🏼👎🏼👎🏼👎🏼👎🏼👎🏼
I hate giving this show any review below an 8 but all I can say is watch season 1, appreciate it in all its glory, and pretend that they never made a season 2. I have never seen a starker contrast between the quality of content written in each season.
Season 1: amazing character depth, character progression, and ultimately character enjoyment.
Season 2: 💩, complete 💩, and completely turning great characters into 💩.
I have begrudgingly pushed through season 2 looking for a redeeming quality but I feel like I just ate 10 lbs of cardboard every episode.
Captain Marvel (2019)
Very disappointing movie
I won't say things like say "save your money" or "worst MCU movie" but it was pretty rough. First off I went into this movie really excited and I wasn't aware of the controversies until after I started looking up reviews to try and make sense of what I just watched.
When I left the movie theater my wife and I were discussing the movie and the things we both agreed on were:
1) The movie was all over the place and barely followed any continuity or even explained who Carol Danvers is. This movie felt like a bunch of movie shorts loosely strung together. By the time the movie gets to the big hero moment it's really uninspired.
2) Brie Larson's acting was flat and you never get to a point we're you care about the character. I don't think it's because Brie Larson is a bad actor. It felt more like it was a directors vision.
3) The CGI was very hit or miss. The CGI used to make Samuel L. Jackson was AMAZING, but the CGI used to create the scenes were Captain Marvel is flying around look like they were made in 20 years ago. The CGI version of Brie Larson doesn't even look like her in certain scenes.
4) The action sequences were bland and sometimes confusing. This goes back to poor director vision. There were scenes were a lot is clearly happening but it's not exactly clear who's who because of the angles and lighting of the scene.
5) The Skrulls prosthetics look silly. When you first see a Skrull transform it looks pretty cool but then when you see them in their natural form it just feels like your watching someone with a Halloween mask.
Overall, this movie feels like a giant step back for the MCU when this could of easily been a giant step forward.
